Microsoft opens up more places on Xbox LIVE Update beta

When Microsoft announced the launch of the Public Beta for its next Xbox LIVE update back in July, it took just a couple of hours for all of the available places to be snapped up by eager gamers. Unsurprisingly, there were many disappointed applicants who missed out on the prospect of experiencing the next Xbox 360 Dashboard before anyone else.

But there is good news! Major Nelson (aka Microsoft’s Larry Hryb) announced today that a limited number of spots is now available for more applicants to join the beta programme.

The features of the new dashboard include:

  • The new Internet Explorer browser for Xbox
  • Recommendations and ratings
  • Pinning and favorites
  • Enhanced search and discovery
  • Voice search (in certain markets)

You can try to sign up right now via Microsoft Connect. Remember that if you will be required to accept a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to ensure that you keep everything hush-hush and avoid blabbing and blogging about it.

So, what are you waiting for? Get on the beta now – and good luck!

There's no longer the product keys link, but the message on the connect site says they'll be coming soon apparently.

The funny thing is the beta forum group doesn't seem to exist either on the Xbox forums, trying to access by following the link on connect.

I could see the 'Product keys' link before when I completed the survey and I tried requesting for a product key but kept getting errors, now I can't see that link anymore

Did anyone get their product key after signing up ?

Since this is a broader rollout, I don't think the product keys are appearing immediately to everyone, and are coming or staged at the very least. I have a couple of techs that still don't have the 'keys' option on the connect screen.

It's showing now mate

They probably need more people because of the lack of positive feedback, more ads, poorly done unwanted My Pins, IE is alright, without plugin support though, fairly useless.

just now waiting for product key.

You request the key through connect, it's instant, getting the update takes a few days after entering the key.

My favorite feature is the "play to". From my windows 8 desktop I can right click a video and in the context menu go to play to----> then select Xbox and it instantly starts streaming!

yes. pretty good. works even with android phones.

Blah, I cant remember my Live gamertag, I put in what I think it is, if it's wrong can I correct it later?

Can't edit my post. I signed up or thought I did, it took me back to the dashboard and nothing is listed. Grr

I don't know how many times I have to keep refreshing the sign up page and having to do it again. All because it's too busy.

I got invite code from someone who got in during the first round of public beta.

really IE10 on the TV is not good, although navigation with controller is unique.
semantic zoom implemented in clicking right stick....

Any other browser that is good or better on the big TV.
IE10 for Xbox 360 use of HTML 5 does pretty good playing back those youtube videos that the sorry Youtube app (thanks Google) can't play.

Heck, even IE perform better on the full Youtube website than the buggy, crash prone and with missing features from the Youtube app.

You are really complaining about web site content not being conducive to be easy to navigate, due to the lack of any UI consistency in Web development that HTML5 is trying to correct.

If you notice, there are a lot of web sites that take into account non-mouse UI concepts that work rather well on the Xbox and this has NOTHING to do with the IE implementation.

Can you honestly say that the browser on the PS3 or any console was better? They all suck if the content is not geared towards newer usability and use hover and dropdown menu that should have died 20 years ago.

PS Do you have a controller keypad?
