On Tuesday morning Microsoft took off the "preview" label of its Outlook.com email service, declaring it to be officially out of the beta testing stage. At the time, Microsoft said that it had already had 60 million users register for the service during the preview period.
The official launch of Outlook.com seems to have caused a large spurt of new signups for the service. In a new Twitter message today, Microsoft said:
And for the more than 1.5 million of you who joined Outlook.com since our launch last night, welcome and thank you! #winchat

The message was part of a Twitter chat with members of the Outlook.com team to the general public earlier today. The chat confirmed that Microsoft is still working on a Calendar feature for the service that will "match the design and experience of the Outlook.com inbox" but no launch date for the Calendar feature was revealed.
As we reported last night, people who want to keep their Hotmail.com email addresses will be able to do so but Microsoft will be moving all of Hotmail.com's users to the new Outlook.com interface over the next several months.
