Microsoft says that Windows Phone has 120,000 apps

Microsoft has announced today that Windows Phone has 120,000 apps in its Windows Phone store and that it is adding hundreds every day. This announcement was made at the WP8 keynote and that the marketplace is growing at an incredible rate.

For Microsoft, growing its app store is an important goal around fostering the image of the Windows Phone platform. Seeing as consumers love apps, having a plethora of them available for download is a critical selling point.

While Windows Phone still has lower app counts than Apple and Google, they are quickly catching up and with Nokia putting out dozens of high quality apps, the quality of the Windows Phone Store is improving every day.

Let us know what your favorite app is and with over 120,000 options, it might be harder than you think to pick just one.

Of course, we will have people asking how many of these apps are useful. So I did a little test - the fart test. I did a search on the WP7 marketplace for the word fart, and found 49 results. I did a search in the iOS store, and found 897 just for the iPhone. Apple says there are 700,000 apps for their store. This means that WP has 0.04% fart apps. IPhone has 0.13% fart apps.

There you have it, iPhone has a higher percentage of crap (no pun intended) apps.

Exactly. How many "Flashlight" apps does any platform need. Quality > Quantity. Having 46/50 most popular is a good position. Once they get it to 50/50 then this silly argument can die.

I'm sure you can also make a argument that they have exclusives not on the other platforms, like the Nokia apps though those are just on Nokia phones.

Speaking of... I'm still looking for a good flashlight app that isn't made by an OEM...

Actually i'm watching this thing live and they said they have 120K apps on thir store. They didn't say if that includes Win8 x86 apps or WP7 run in an emulator.

This is just the Windows Phone store, has nothing to do with Windows 8's Store or apps.

Why? I have an iPhone and the Facebook app made by Facebook is a piece of crap, same goes for the android app too

They specifically called out the new Facebook app for WP8 in the event. I don't know if it's made by FB, probably still made by MS, but they know the OS better and I bet they'll do a better job in the end.

Why on earth would you want that? I say let Microsoft make the app so that we know it's going to actually work.

They've made it pretty easy to port apps now from the other platforms like iOS and Android by adding support for things like native code. So there's really no reason not to expect more of these big name apps like Instagram etc. Hell Pandora is coming at the start of 2013 for example.

That's an excellent point.

So is Pandora still big in the US? Spotify seems to have taken the stage... I was angry when he said Pandora instead of well anything else >_<

I feel lied too by the IRC Bot..
