Microsoft sells 140,000 Xbox 360 consoles in June

Microsoft's Xbox 360 console sold quite a few consoles in June 2013, but it has been bested this time by a console from Nintendo. Today, Microsoft announced that it sold 140,000 units of its nearly eight year old console in June 2013 in the US. Microsoft claims this is the 30th straight month that the Xbox 360 has outsold all current generation consoles.

The announcement on Xbox Wire also says that in June, a total of $197 million was spent on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories, which Microsoft again claims is more than any other console for the month. However, Nintendo's 3DS portable console actually outsold the Xbox 360 in June. Gamesindustry International reports that, according to the NPD Group, the 3DS sold 225,000 units in the US. It's likely that Microsoft does not compare sales of the Xbox 360 to the portable 3DS.

In any event, the overall retail games industry continue to slump as total US sales went down 15 percent in June to $593.3 million. The top selling game in June was the PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us, followed by the 3DS exclusive Animal Crossing: New Leaf in second place. Microsoft's Xbox 360 exclusive game Minecraft, which was released to retail stores several months after it became a digital download hit, came in third place in game sales in June.

Considering the PS2 is only recently decontinued for manufacturing. (I'm sure there's storage rooms full to keep selling them)
And the PSX ran long into the PS2's time.

The PS3 will be around for a long time

Unlike MS, Sony does not ignore the rest of the world, PS2's are still a big hit in South America and sell by the hundreds of thousands.

I found a store on eBay recently selling Sega Mega Drive 2's... Brand new that had been in storage. So your probably right about the PS3's, being around along time.

Cool to find those in unused state
But the PS2 was still being sold in Brasil (and a few other countries) in retail shops which I was aiming at

They only recently stopped manufacturing PS2's, they kept them going as developing countries still buy them.

Two in a row comments about the 3DS not being a console in a row? I guess people will say anything to make their heroes look legendary...

With the way XBOX One's DRM is expect sales of the 360 to go up and PS4 to be high too.

Not sure if serious...

Although now you don't have to keep your XBOX One online all the time, it still has to connect to the net a least once a day... and also the first time you use it you have to connect to the net for a download. If that's not DRM what is, also not everyone who buys consoles are online. So people will buy a XBOX One; get it home, realise that it doesn't work if there not online. They will then take it back and get a PS4, so the sales of the PS4 will go up.

Okay. Now we know. Ignorant.

The first time you have to connect it to the Internet to remove the drm restrictions including having to connect it once a day to the Internet.

Well actually the next PSX has way less DRM vs the Xbox One even with MS' changes. I wouldn't be surprise if the PS4 will outsell the Xbox One. Right now Amazon says they have sold all pre-order units on both. But that doesn't mean much yet.

Once the Xbox One in in peoples hands and they use them and they don't like it, if they don't have an Xbox 360 or sold it, they may run out an buy it again. Because I surely will. I did preorder an Xbox One, but I may cancel it because I didn't like much of what I heard.

The Xbox one discs are for install only. You need to connect to the internet at least once to authenticate them (games won't run off disc). I'm sure there will also be a required connection to update the console and games as well.

If true they will make you go online every 24 hours to check for updates for games and console... all they will have done is change the wording of the DRM... But it still will be a online check every day.

Wrong. with the new changes the disk is the DRM IDENTICAL to the PS3, PS4 and Xbox 360. You need to install the game to HDD yes(identical to PS4), but the disk is the only DRM, you do NOT need to connect to the internet ever to play the game, if you buy a day one edition xbox, you need to connect the xbox online before you can play games to download the update that changes the xbox to the disk based DRM instead of the online checking.

also it never needed to be always online, the old DRM WAS the once in a 24 hour period check.

seriously, stop spreading false FUD.

First day back from a two month vacation from the Internet?

few more months, and xbox360 will be undisputed king in north America. bye bye wii

and xbox360 rakes in the most money from games and accessories too other than NA.

recently stats show in the first 6 months in the U.K,game sales(not incl. digital)

xbox360 4.3 million
ps3 3.2 million
pc 1.3 million
3ds 0.8 million
wii U 0.179 million

Good thing Nintendo and Sony don't focus just on the NA market. Hope MS will bother with our European and the Asian markets with the Xone.
The US only **** on the 360 makes you sad if you're an European or Asian Xbox owner.

What Asian markets. Microsoft is terrible with Xbox in Japan as they are all sticklers for the PlayStation as it is a home brand. China? Seems PSX is king their too. All MS has is NA mostly and some of Europe. If I was MS, I wouldn't even want to sell anything in Europe thanks to how the EU treats them.

If they wont focus on the markets, ofcourse they wont conquer it.
They focus on the US and even there they have a hard time.
While here in EU the shift is towards Sony and in Asia MS is barely represented at all.

Thing is, just 1 market isn't enough anymore. If MS gives up and loses the EU market, you think publishers will focus their games for Xbox or rather PS?
It will even hurt the Xbox fanboys if MS fails to satisfy the global market.
But their US only attitude remains strong

They don't have a US only attitude, they simply focus more on the US because we buy the biggest share of the products. Even Apple knows this and Sony does too.

Yes they do need to focus efforts outside. But they have did some in Asian markets with Japan basically sticking with PS because it is a home system, just like we do.

There is more cost with outside focus and if you cant make back what you invest, what is the point? Asians don't even like the Xbox, so why waste money focusing on them? Would you? Because I wouldn't. MS has HA and Europe and that is where they focus and have had great results.

LOL
US isn't the biggest market. It depends and varies on games.

Japan sells 150k Earth Defense Force 4 in a week.
The last of us, in the US, only sold 90k in a week, and only 82k in a week in the EU, although the total number is 900k for EU and 870k for US.

Xbox also has some market in Asia, but a very little. Which comes cause of their US only focus.

Xbox isn't as huge if you look at global numbers, especially if you ignore the US.

You haven't really checked the game sales right? PS3 is outselling the Xbox in game sales in EU and Asia.
Both with bigger numbers of sales then the US alone, let alone put together it far outweighs the US market.

US market isn't the biggest market.

If EU sells 900k games, that is a bigger number then 870k right? Or is my math off?

can you show me data for full year 2012,2011,2010 with total game sales estimates? I don't want monthly crap, because it changes on game releases. im genuinely curious, because all the stuff ive read in the past suggests otherwise. even digital game sales are 2:1 in the U.Ss favor I think in the last 2 years, compiled by NPD if you want to look it up.

Edited by vcfan, Jul 20 2013, 5:56pm :

also forgot to mention, NPD also says digital game sales are 1/3 of physical game sales,so already, thats a huge chunk. Im not saying NPD is on the money though, but if theres a huge gap, then I would tend to favor the results. If its close,it could go either way.

Was indeed just looking at recent charts, i dont constantly keep track of these.
2012
US: Total 19,832,247
EU: Total 19,073,483
JAPAN: Total 9,520,730

2013 thus far however
US: Total 5,065,347
EU: Total 6,113,877
JAPAN: Total 3,728,559
