Microsoft teases Cortana is coming "soon" for UK Windows Phone 8.1 users

Technically, anyone who has already downloaded the Developer Preview version of Windows Phone 8.1 can go ahead and set up their smartphone to activate its Cortana digital assistant right now. However, Microsoft is officially only offering Cortana to U.S. residents.

That situation may be changing in the very near future. A post today on the official Windows Phone UK Twitter page hints strongly that Cortana will expand to residents across the pond "soon"

Exactly how soon is still a mystery, but we would assume that UK users will be able to get a native version of Cortana up and running sometime before Windows Phone 8.1 becomes generally available. That's expected to happen during the month of June.

Microsoft has also confirmed that a version of Cortana made for the vast Chinese market will go live for Windows Phone 8.1 sometime before the end of 2014. However, other regions around the world will have to wait until 2015 before they will be able to access native versions of the digital assistant. There are also rumors that Cortana could made its debut in a future PC version of Windows.

Cortana with a British accept would sound hot... lol

I already love how she responds to when I call her 'sexy' (e.g. 'Good morning, sexy!")

Yep, you have to install US English and change your language and speech settings to enable it. I decided to just wait until we get it officially. Not long to go now though.

Surely better to get a localised Cortana rather than hacking a US version, lol!

How can you install it? It's not available in settings...

It wont download an en-us language for the phone. It only adds speech and keyboard.
We will have to wait I guess.

Hmm, that's strange.

You'll need to do all of the following:

Add US English keyboard.
Add US English language.
Change region to US (I think).
Change speech language to US English.

After a reboot I believe Cortana just shows up.

It did for me when I first tried it at least. Though if your 8X won't even let you download new languages you might just have to wait (recommended anyway, really).

Can download new languages but if you notice each language has the following options:
Phone Language
Keyboard Language
Speech Language
Everything but Phone language can be downloaded for en-us

For Cortana you need region and display language to en-us, I think.
New languages can be downloaded, except en-us.

They can on my Lumia 920 and 620. Could just be a HTC thing? Or maybe a carrier thing as both phones are unlocked.

Yes, for what I researched, the problem seems to only exist on European HTC phones.
