Microsoft: Kinect will "blow away" iPad sales

In a move of confidence, Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda expressed his opinion on Kinect sales saying that the webcam-style peripheral will "blow away" the iPad. Speaking in an interview with Gamasutra at the Tokyo Game Show, the Kinect spokesman stated that device is on track to sell millions of units this holiday season.

"The preorders have been really strong. As far as what we're looking at for Holiday, this is going to be stuff that'll blow away any of the sales you've seen with iPad," says Tsunoda, when asked what he thought about the device's chances of success. "The Xbox 360 is already selling better than the Wii and Sony right now. Kinect's really just going to boost that to a whole new level."

Apple’s iPad sold one million units in its first 28 days on the market. The device went on to sell a total of three million units in less than three months.

There is much speculation among gamers that Kinect will fundamentally change the landscape of the Xbox 360, which thrives on its popularity with core gamers. Tsunoda responded "This is both for people making games and people playing games. We just want you to make or play the games any way that you want."

Tsunoda insists that video game developers should pick whether they want to make their titles compatible with Kinect, a traditional controller, or even both. "If you want to make a game with a controller and using Kinect, if that's going to make the game the most fun, use it that way. That's awesome. The only thing we're looking for is to enable developers to build the best experiences possible," says Tsunoda. "Both developers and the people playing are loving the experiences."

Neowin reported this week of Microsoft's announcement of five new Kinect games. Kinect for the Xbox 360 is set to hit stores shelves on November 4 in North America and November 10 in Europe. The device carries a $149.99/£149.99 price tag.

The whole comment was dumb. The Xbox 360 is older, has more users, has a larger market penetration, and is an entirely different platform. What would be a shocker is if the Kinect didn't sell more than Apple has sold iPad.

I mean this is as dumb as comparing sales of OSX too Windows. Windows has 90% of the market, Vista by it self sold more copies of a single OS than Apple has sold ALL of their OS in 30 years. It kinda goes without saying. Windows will always outsell OSX as long as their market remains larger.

the fact is 90% of the world likes to sit down and play games to relax this and sony's move will FAIL

Not everyone. Remember how popular Dance revolution was, with the floorpan? It was a great party favor too. I went to plenty of parties where we get drunk and compete in this game. We be falling all over each other cracken up. This would be a oool way to drink and drive with hurting anyone. Plus for me, when I am playing Blur I am rarely sitting down. Its not like Final Fantasy that you can play laying down its so boring. :-))

In other news: Crude oil will blow away Kinect sales.

What is it with Microsoft employees and their retarded comments lately? They sure sound like a frustrated bunch. It makes Microsoft look very professional too...

It's not the first time Microsoft would launch a product, scream out loud "it will blow away the [insert Apple product here]" and end up failing...

But did they REALLY have to compare this to an Apple product this time? They don't even have a similar product, hell they're not even that much into gaming!

Anyways, the way I see it, they're treating Apple like a serious rival (except Mister Ballmer) and this is a good thing. There's this magical key to succeed in life : know your enemy.

how you compare between Kinect and iPod ! they are diffrent device !!!!

then we can compare between BMW X6 and Adobe Photoshop ! so who can win this challenge?! Adobe or BMW ? wow what you think ?!!! this is crazy comparison I ever see ..

Dumb comparison - two completely different markets and the gaming market is obviously much bigger. Of course Kinect will exceed iPad sales.

I didn't know the two were going for the same market... Are these two products really that comparable?

They aren't even close and the market for the iPad is in another city compared to market for the kinect

Sony needs to issue the same press release, sans kinect adding "move".

....

Wait, why didn't MS just compare kinect to a similar product like sony's move? Because they know the move will sell better maybe?

The Move will sell bunk (like it has already). However, they didn't compare it because...really, how can they? The would have to have a Move bundle that included 2 Move, 2 Nav, 1 Eye Pet and the Sports game. Then they should compare.

Both devices are expected to be higly desireable holiday gifts. Both will compete for limited spending dollars within a clearly defined timeframe. Both will compete for mindshare. Both will compete for hype and the possibility of being an item that causes purchasing frenzies.

I guess there's no reason to compare the sales of the two devices at all. Hell, why ever compare Apple and Microsoft in any aspect since they have two separate business models?

So £1 == $1 now? Fantastic.

Typical B&M post. There are lots of reasons why things are priced higher in UK (when following the conversion rates). For starters, VAT must be included in the price. In the US, sales tax is handled state-by-state. I have also heard that UK has a minimum warranty of 1 year, while it isn't really regulated in the US (it will probably be 90 day here). What about advertisment costs in UK vs US? The cost of having headquarters there? These things all add up. It isn't the evil US company trying to screw the Brits over.

How about "Kin(ect) will be blown away from iPad sales"

lol, I was just thinking the same thing. MS must like using KIN in their product names It certainly doesn't bode well for its future.

I am normally a big MS proponent, and I own an iPad. However, this begs the question, what is MS smoking? If this were purely software, most likely, but everyone knows that Apple's iDevices sell extremely well. What was the last count on sales of the iPad, 6 million? And what do the devices have in common that would justify this type of comparison? MS is just grasping at straws because they have yet to come up with a real answer to the iPad.

nytiger73 said,

Both were seen by the tech industry as attempting to create a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Do they not realize how ridiculous this sounds? Since the Zune and the phone I can't recall the name of since it wasn't on the market long enough to stick failed to 'bury Apple' as MS had hoped...now we just pick a random MS product and challenge Apple's latest hot item?

Lol yeah i just noticed that too! I read mirosoft and thought, wait? Who's Mirosoft? Then I read kinect and thought oh Microsoft!

This shows that Microsoft is so desperate that some of its employees do not have a functional brain anymore.

Kudo Tsunoda's brain works in a fundamentally different way than yours. Could you have come up with the architecture behind Kinect? probably not.

Does he go around trashing people who do something with their lives instead of trolling on boards, again, doubtful.

The Kinect can be a maxi-pad as well

Sorry couldn't pass that up lol...

Yeah it's a pretty weak comparison. I think maybe they were trying to focus on the must have tech gifts or something for the year or xmas season. I think apples and oranges have more in common...

I think he is talking about numbers. He is saying the Kniect will move more units at its launch that the iPad when it was launched.

Haha, yes it's stupid. They don't even compete. Your kid can play on a Kinect while you browse news on an iPad.

That is the only comparison and yet they went for it. It's working is a way though because of the attention it's getting. Sometimes, the best way to get people's attention is to say, do or present something really stupid and it worked this time lol

They both have microprocessors, and both have been raising consumer expectation since announcement.

Gosh, you spoil sport!

Uh huh... And the relation between a tablet gadget and video game console accessory is what exactly? The Microsoft vs. Apple obsession is not only illogical (they have more complimentary products than competitive ones) but really, REALLY old.

And even if "the Xbox 360 is already selling better than the Wii", Nintendo's console still has millions more units sold than XBOX 360 and is unlikely to be de-throned any time soon.

Let's keep things in perspective.

Yep...just like Apple says they are the most popular gaming platform over Nintendo. How so? Nintendo has 7 generation of portable devices that started with the original Gameboy in 1989. And that franchise has ran unchallenged since the Game Gear. So Apple outsells a product for i year and they think they are king of a platform that already is in large numbers. Apple going Intel didn't make Intel any better, it just made them richer. To Intel Apple is just another PC maker.

Apple and MSFT have a different product strategy, and Apple is copying it with their devices. Apple's devices don't compete against one another, they are seen to work as a family of devices, like Windows and most MS software is. But printing million of copies of a CD, has far more money in it vs hardware.

When I got to the lot, NASA said the Columbia wasn't available for purchase, I had to settle for a Challenger instead. Man that 'blows'.

I think i also read somewhere that bottled water are going to outsell BMW's, oh thats right they are not related.

I really don't understand how they can draw parallels between an iPad and an add on for the Xbox. It would make more sense if Nintendo or Sony where talking about the iPhone/iPod but Kinnect and the iPad.

Perhaps Microsoft should have release a slate instead of blustering about an iPad killer, even Android is getting slate type devices.

This can be filed under the same category as Balmer saying that the iPhone is not going to have any impact.

Well, he is not talking of Kinect taking sales away of the iPad. He is saying that Kinect will sell better than the iPad, which is considered to be a top selling device.

sviola said,

But they're still two completely different things, not to mention one is a "core device" while another is an accessory. People will probably justify buying a Kinect over an iPad because of price (less than buying a system) and they already have the system that it's for.

So of course it probably will outsell the iPad, and there's many reasons why it will. However there are probably many things they could have compared this too instead.

The best in my mind would be Sony's Move since they're both new and motion related.

Tanshin said,

That is what they should've been talking about. The Move gets released and this guy comes out and says Kinect is going to sell more than the iPad? How is that going to make the Kinect sound any better?

I actually love the Move. I just picked it up on Friday. It took about and hour to get used to and hating it for it to grow and then it was like "this is the best thing ever" lol

Right now, the Move or the Wii are the only things they could've compared it to.

WTH is up with these people today and and the ipad. Baby formula will stomp Ipad sales! Cars will stomp Ipad sales!

I don't know if OP was referring to OS X or iOS, but I think MS needs to make a better OS which can perform across devices.

I don't know why Vista gets so much negative press. I've been using it since release and have yet to have a single crash or issue with it.
