More rumors of 2013 launch for next Xbox

New rumors have hit the Internet today claiming that Microsoft plans to launch the next version of its Xbox game console sometime in 2013. These new rumors come from the Develop web site which claims to have heard this target date for the launch from several unnamed sources in the game industry. One source claims that Microsoft developer Lionhead is working on the game for the console with the code name "Fable Next." Fable is the RPG game franchise that Lionhead has developed for Microsoft over the years with three games already released and a fourth for the Xbox 360 already announced as being in the works.

Develop's article also claims that despite an earlier comment by publisher Electronic Arts, one of EA's internal development studios already has what the article calls "rudimentary Xbox console technology on desks." Finally the article claims that Epic Games' next version of its Unreal Engine game development tools could be made available before 2014, a date that was recently announced by Epic Games' main programmer Tim Sweeney.

Earlier this year, rumors began appearing on the Internet suggesting that Microsoft would officially announce plans for the next Xbox console at E3 2012 with the actual launch to happen in late 2013. Yet more rumors indicated that Microsoft game developer Rare was already working on a "mature themed" game for the next console, along with Lionhead and Forza Motorsports developer Turn 10.

It's name will be Xbox 540 ( confirmed info from the deepest of ms ) ... take a look at ps3's controller and use some geometry !

Also ... cant w8 for xenos 2 !
and i want to see if the new gen will be faster from nvidia's monster gpus ... TEH "MAXWELL" 16gflops per gpu ftw , im expecting atleast 20 gflops in the consoles or no buy for me !

Well... I agree it would keep the name Xbox, and because they are trying to get us to use more Kinect and TV on the xbox.. The "name" should reflect that inclusion of entertainment. So, how about... :
Xbox Play
Xbox Nation
Xbox Media Hub
Xbox Elite
Xbox Integra
Xbox Powerhouse
Xbox Sheek
Xbox Trident
Xbox Hub
Xbox Freedom
Xbox Now
Xbox Kingdom
Xbox Playground
Xbox Premier
Xbox Media Tower
Xbox Shocker
Xbox Media Storm

Can you think of any more that would more appropriately tie together: Game(hub) + Music(hub) + Video(hub) + TV(hub) ?

As long as it comes with Windows 8 Media Center and can play all my local videos (think BluRay level bit-rates and 7.1 sound), then I will buy one. Though I'd prefer it not use UPnP. NFS FTW!!

gosh if anything just make xbox live cheaper! holy cow M$ im surprised more people don't go to sony its plain ridiculous... then you raise the price to $60/yr... what are you thinking?? free online is sony's number one hook. if i ever talk to somebody about consoles they say they'd rather buy a ps3 so they don't get locked into the annual bill. cmon M$!!

xbox and ps3 barely do hd anyeay, the latest games are in 960x720 witch is lower than hd. batman arkham city on pc will be dx11 enable and physx, they released a dx11 screenshot today showing it, it awesome

LOL. the Xbox 360 does iPhone res games! i can't wait for the 720, my 360 is really boring.

Hope I don't have to wait 4+ years after launch to get a reliable console. I miss the days when you bought one system and it actually lasted the life of the platform.

Agreed. I hate having to have two boxes on my shelf. One for games, the other for movies.

They're justification of "no need for BR, we give you streaming" just doesn't wash with me. Bandwidth caps make that justification invalid for many, if not most, people.

The need for larger capacity discs isn't just for movies, it's cause we need to be rid of disc swapping in console games. Which blu-ray could do.

Temporarily. Eventually assets will eventually exceed what BR has to offer. I'd rather see it come with a 1tb harddrive or something.

True. However last i checked even the largest games on the pc, which are typically mmo's, still don't come close to the limits of a dual layer blu-ray. So your typical console game, which tends to be much smaller than an mmo still have a good while to go to reach that. And perhaps even longer if those blu-ray discs with more than 2 layers i think i've heard something about a good while back end up coming to be.

MGS4 would've taken up more than one BR dual-layer, but they cut back on the game to get it to fit. Rage had to do a lot of compressing to fit on a single-layer BR disc when compared to its original, uncompressed assets. Microsoft also discourages multi-disc games, so that has to be factored in with console titles. Regardless; ship on multiple discs if you have to, install, and no need to fuss with it again (in my opinion) except maybe as the "dongle" for the game. Better performance, if nothing else. Granted, that's how I play my 360 games (don't buy physical PC games anymore), and I'm likely a minority there.

Given the 360's sales and profitability, I'd really be surprised to see it so "soon." Similarly, the PS3 spent a lot of time losing money through hardware subsidization, so I don't expect Sony to be in a rush for a PS4. New systems do one thing very well - devour money for the platform holder.

Now, I don't doubt they're already working on it simply because that's how these things work. But, given the costs of development for making games now being a significant bottleneck with diminishing returns (and, honestly, limited to 1080p), I wouldn't be surprised if it was more Wii-like; a relatively modest hardware update compared to the massive leaps we're used to (ie, not PS1 to PS2 to PS3 level jumps).

I do hope BC is handled better. If publishers do dual-format discs that'd be ideal - make a game for 360 and 720, release it on a single disc (sort of like the Burger King XB/360 games), and go from there. It would provide a more natural upgrade path, IMO, and would cause 360 owners to begin "investing" in the new system, thus making it more likely they'll get it rather than change over.

Of course Lionhead are working on a new game. Peter Molenyeux went on an interview about how he talked with the xbox team within Microsoft about what the future of controller-free gaming might be like. Expect interesting things.

And it's been rumoured time and time again that MS solicited from their premier partners requirements from a new console.

As far as Epic go, their newest engine is amazing, and I hope it hits the next console.

Only one this is certain, it'll have the word Xbox in the name. It's not going to be Xbox Metro because that's a code name for their UI, nor Xbox 720 because that's impossible. 360 refers to degrees of a circle (ie. a complete all-round experience). You can't get more than 360 degrees, so calling it the 720 would be stupid.

It'll be an entirely new name next to the word "Xbox", guaranteed.

Xbox 1080, while a very unlikely name, would technically fit if they were going for a full native 1080p system. Sure, it probably wouldn't really make too much sense in succession to the 360, but that's just an example.

One source claims that Microsoft developer Lionhead is working on the game for the console with the code name "Fable Next".
Hopefully it will launch with some new ips rather than just more halo, fable and forza.

Agreed. I really wish they'd woo some of Sega's old properties to it... Panzer Dragoon, Skies of Arcadia... Etc, etc...

Well, they did for the original Xbox, and got some hardcore new IP, but the lack of followups seems to indicate that sales weren't what MS or Sega wanted. Pity that... be great if Panzer Dragoon Orta got re-released on PSN and Live - Sega has been reheating the same old Genesis leftovers for too long now and ignoring the other really good stuff in their library. Panzer Dragoon Saga, for instance! @_@

Personally i'd like if sega got back into making consoles and games.

They still make games, well, more as a publisher, and while it's not consoles they do still make arcade hardware. The thing is, this market won't support 4 consoles, 3 is the sweet spot IMO.

Wonder what's happening on the Sony Playstation front.

well they have a list of what the launch of PS4 will include, then what will be taken away a few months later, and then again a year later and then again at the slim version..... by the time slim comes out PS3 compatability will be removed... sony has it all planned out

^^ I'm sick of people calling it the 720 too, it isn't funny.

Anyway, it's about bloody time they released a new one, it's been holding back innovation in the gaming industry. I mean, my ageing GTX 260 can still play all the new cross platform game ports in full whack!

consoles shouldn't hold back innovation, the problem is the darn companies that focus on consols and say PC's are dead...... yet the PC is where all the true power is

Try the newest Batman: Arkham city with full PhysX enabled. From the demo reels I've seen the 360 version looks crap with no AA and weird lighting effects.

Here's hoping PC version still uses PhysX

Its not holding things back nearly as much as money. We'd see more innovation if game publishers weren't so risk adverse, afraid to spend $20-40 million on a game that's unproven when they could spend the same amount of money on a franchise sequel and be nearly guaranteed a great profit.

As for graphics - the PC market's hardware diversity is a problem too. Sure, you might have a rig that can push 2560x1600 at 120fps, full details, but that's not normal. Why do all that work that only a minority of buying customers can experience? Keeping it console-levels or lower seems to be more prudent, safer and more profitable. Which gets back to being risk-adverse. Certainly Brad Wardell's oooold post about "make games for buying customers" makes sense still.

Finally someone who speaks some sense about PC Gaming. All the die-hard fanboys who bitch about Console games holding back gaming. If a company made their game push PC hardware to its current max. They'd spend a fortune doing it, and would get very few sales. The majority of PC's sold now are not capable of Console level graphics yet. You have to specifically search out a computer branded as a gaming PC to beat a console, and those are damn expensive. And not every human being is blessed with the ability to build a Computer.

There's more to it than resolution alone. And resolution is not where consoles are holding back game graphics. It's the hardware feature set. Consoles are on the level of directx 9. PC's have had directx 11 available for 2 years and DX11 is capable of much more than DX9. However we're barely seeing any of dx11 being taken advantage of due to the consoles, which are still around with no end in near sight, despite the fact their life cycle for this generation should already be over. And thus gaming graphics are not really moving forward at the rate they should be

Its not so much about resolution as capability: How many of the PCs out there have XP and DX9 video still, though? Intel still has their crappy graphics out there, made even worse with the i-series of CPUs with it built in. How many video cards/GPUs are out there that are DX10/11 capable but don't have enough horsepower to actually do anything worth a hoot? And out of all those that can, what's the expected number users who will actually buy a game?

I suspect OEMs and game developers have more information on that than we do, and the numbers aren't likely compelling enough to really use DX10 or 11 to their fullest.

Can you read this and tell me what you think? http://draginol.joeuser.com/article/303512/Piracy_PC_Gaming

Its all about the money, and I don't think the money is there to really push what top-end hardware is capable of.

Except they are clearly not going to use the word Metro in the name. Metro is the codename for their unified UI design language. Besides, they rarely use their code names in final products. Windows "7" was the most recent exception to this that I recall.

They would never scrap their XBox branding... They've invested too much in building awareness of it.

Make no changes to the device case, add a slightly upgraded processor, and name it XBOX 360s. Millions of people will be fooled into thinking it is some awseomely new device chock full of magic unicorns, and the media as well as emo boys and girls world over will line up so that will believe that they are better than everyone else with their purchase.

This is Microsoft, not Apple.... MS even if they make it 4x more powerfull add in 4x the memory and support full 1080p at 60fps with the best graphics card out there people will go "M$ FAIL!" Apple slight uptick in performance its OMG BEST THING EVER!

You mean double the CPU processing speed and up the GPU speed by 4X?

Because I always wished I could decode the human genome on my phone. Now I am one step closer, but not quite there.

Years ago when you needed to double CPU processing power to correctly run the OS, people used to criticize MS for creating bloated software. Now it is a marketing point.

Fan boy alert. Just because it's dual core doesn't mean its processing speed has double'd :L It's still 800mhz...
