Motorola Droid Bionic on sale at Verizon Thursday for $299.99

Starting tomorrow, Verizon Wireless users will finally be able to purchase a Android-based smartphone that's been delayed for months. The company issued a press release today announcing that the Droid Bionic mobile phone will go on sale on Thursday. The phone, made by Motorola, was first announced back in January at CES 2011 for a launch this past spring. However the phone's release was delayed, reportedly due to issues of getting its 4G LTE based technology working properly.

The phone supports Verizon's LTE wireless network while also having a dual core processor (a Texas Instruments-based OMAP 1 Ghz chip with 1 GB of memory). The Droid Bionic runs on Android 2.3.4, has a large 4.3 touch screen, an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, a front facing camera for video chats, and an HDMI port. It also has 16 GB of on-board storage and Verizon also adds a 16 GB microSD card for a total of 32 GB. The phone also allows its users to turn the Droid Bionic into a WiFi hotspot for up to five devices for an additional fee.

All of those features do not come cheap. Verizon will sell the Droid Bionic for a whopping $299.99 with a new two year contract when it goes on sale on Thursday. The phone also supports being attached to the optional Lapdock, which turns the phone into a laptop computer with a full keyboard and an 11.6 inch screen. The Lapdock sells for $299.97.

I was wondering when the carriers were going to start raising phone prices. It was only a matter of time. Give it a few more years and $300 will be the norm for most new phones. It'll happen. People will complain but in the end they will still pay the price because they have to have the latest toy. The carriers know this and will profit from it. Ugh...

I really don't want to get this phone knowing there will be 1.5ghz dual core phones out in a month but I broke my rooted motodroid in july and instead of doing an insurance claim decided to wait it out with the sgs2 rumored to come out in July and never happened. Now I'm stuck with my friends devour and can't stand it much more.

They're smoking the crack if they think a lot of people will pay 299 for that.

How about the 32GB iPhone? There is no difference. So yeah people will of course buy it. It's one of the most anticipated phones this year. It's not like it's running Windows or BlackBerry.

32GB iPhone is a bad comparison to go on. The local ATT stores only get 4 32GB iPhones a month and 150 16GB iPhones. Most people end up hvaing to special order the 32GB phones because they aren't carried. 32GB iPhones don't sale anywhere near as good because of the price tag.

I can't wait for the Prime. If it comes out on Verizon and it's Dual Core 4G LTE, I'll gladly pay $299.

That's the price WITH a contract? And according to the site a phone package of $40 and a 2GB data package of $30 are required. That brings the total price to just short of $2000. That's criminal. I'm paying nothing like that for my HTC Sensation (a very similar phone) here in the UK, with unlimited data.

I love the multi-million dollar ad campaign. I thought I was watching a trailer for a movie. Motorola and Verizon will spend a billion advertising it, yet most people would still be happier with an iPhone.

299 for an outdated phone...no thanks!

I know right? Why are they making these Dual Core Phones with 4G LTE, HDMI, 1080P Video Shooting, 8MP Camera and Android 2.3.4 anyways? It something my grandma used to use. /s

So having the latest operating system justifies a 299 price tag? Everything else you listed has been around a while now. A phone that offers nothing new should not cost that much with a contract.

The iPhone 32GB has cost $299. And it doesn't have dual core or LTE. Hmm. You sir don't know what you are talking about. If it's too expensive for you, then don't get it. But as far as I am concerned the specs justify the cost. Show me a phone that has better specs for less money on day of release? I DARE you.

I'll wait for the price to drop. Got my DX right after the prices dropped, a few months after release, and I've been quite happy with it. The Bionic looks like it could be a good replacement when my contract comes up for renewal, but by then there will be other choices as well.
