Motorola to make big announcement October 18

October seems to be the month for major new mobile phone product announcements. Last week Apple revealed the iPhone 4S and now Motorola has sent over invites to members of the press for a media event to be held in New York City at noon on Tuesday, October 18. The company has released a teaser trailer for the event which you can check out below.

Speculation has already begun on what Motorola has in store for the folks lucky enough to attend the press event. Some believe it will be a new smartphone, perhaps the one that has been called both the Motorola Spyder and the Droid Razr. Others believe it will be the official reveal of the Xoom 2, the next version of Motorola's Android-powered tablet device that was also leaked out a few weeks ago. The trailer doesn't really give much in the way of hints, so we will may just have to wait for another eight days to find out for sure.

We are still awaiting word on when Samsung and Google will reschedule their planned joint press event that should introduce the first Android 4.0 based smartphone to the world. It was supposed to be held tomorrow but the two companies rescheduled it due to the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Finally, Microsoft and Nokia are expected to make some official announcements concerning the first Nokia smartphones with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system at the Nokia World event. It will be held in London on October 26.

wasnt there another rumour about motorola rebooting the RAZR brand on the new phone? the clip has a Razor blade in it. and the word faster and *thinner* which is what the RAZR phone was famous for. seems like a launch of the new phone with the name RAZR in it. Droid RAZR, anyone?

I concur. I would say ots the Motorola RAZR reborn as a smartphone.

Here is what is funny, the RAZR V3 which sold more as a single model then any phone ever @ 50M+ in a single year, wasn't as fancy as iPhone, yet had more features, smaller screen and a lower cost.

Something that hasn't change!!!!

Perhaps they are trying to do this before the Prime announcement in order to up stage Samsung.

Highly unlikely. The Razr brand did well for Motorola. It's only hype. Nothing can top the Nexus Prime announcement at this point.

This is what I'm talking about when I talk about people buying into the hype. What is this statement based on? What do we know about the phone at this point? It has a cool curve to it and it's running an OS that every Android based phone will have in a few months.

Are you talking about the Razr or the Prime? The Prime is supposed to bridge the phone and tablet platform together. But the biggest thing for me is that it is the first Nexus device on the Verizon network and it will have 4G LTE. That's all they need to tell me to have med sold.

Is this a European launch or what? I'm asking because the date is in european format.

What are you on about? 18 is Septruary

*yawn* Someone let me know when Motorola mobility is fully sold off and no more, that would be news, a new motorola droid phone on the other hand? Not really.

I give it another year before some forum members start using "Big announcemnts" to 'launch' a new avatar or sig - they have all been corrupted by these big companies and their meaning of something big.

everyone thinks they have to be Apple and make a big splash announcement. Forget that crap - just keep putting out awesome products and the masses will come.

And that would NOT be born out by any historical facts...

Is this how it's done now-a-days? I heard McDonalds is having a press conference next week to unveil a new straw for their soft drinks.

Damn! Why'd nobody tell me about the new straw?

Judging by the teaser, it will have a jet engine, eyeballs, a razor blade, be made out of diamonds encased in kevlar, and fire bullets. That's quite a phone.

i don't think anything can top the nexus prime at this point. id buy moto if they would unlock the bootloaders.

I agree. I only bought the Xoom because it was unlockable. Before then, the last Motorola product I purchased was the Razr (ironically).
