NeoBytes :) "We call it the iPhone 5S. The 'S' stands for 'same'"

NeoBytes :) is an occasional feature that takes a step back from the big headlines, to take a look at what else is happening in the vast, scary expanse of the tech world - often with a cynical eye, always with a dose of humour.

Is it just us, or are Apple launches just a bit less magical than they once were? Perhaps it's all the leaks that seem to plague Apple devices as much as its rivals these days; it does take away much of the excitement of the official reveal.

Still, it doesn't really matter what we think about the announcement itself; a new iPhone sells itself, and with not one, but two, new iPhones expected to be announced, Apple will, let's face it, be selling handsets at an insane rate regardless of our loss of awe over the whole event.

And let's be honest - the launch of any new iPhone is an event in itself. Android has the lion's share of the smartphone market, but it's the iPhone that enjoys the greatest profits, and which arguably has a greater influence on the market as a whole than any other single handset out there.

And of course, that makes it ripe for parody - and iPhone Launch Day is the perfect day to share this vid, poking fun at the launch of the new iPhone 5S and 5C. There are a few lines in the video that made us giggle - so be sure to take a couple of minutes to watch it, before you go and join the queue down at the Apple Store

I've been a die hard Apple user since the Apple II+, but their closed systems are just not worth the cost of admission anymore. Back when the iPhone was head and shoulders better than the competition, it was an easy choice, but I look at my friends' S4s and HTCs and I'm jealous. Their lack of development is hurting them. I want memory card expansion, a bigger screen, replaceable batter, etc. I would have to switch to something like Google and re-teach my wife. Not sure I can take the complaining.

Last I checked, Samsung had higher profits this time around. You're also assuming the 5C is go to sell. It probably. But to me, its going to sell to the same ppl who would have bought the other phone instead.

Apple doesn't understand emerging markets because they have never tried to cater to them. If they thing a $550 is cheap, then they are wrong. $550 is no different than $650, both are not affordable for the mass majority.

In the Philippines, Globe Telecom is the largest carrier. SInce the release of the iPhone 5, they have sold roughly only 15000 of them. In a country that has over 100M people. Sure lost of teens an adults want an iPhone, but how can they afford one? They can't even buy an older one. Explain, how does a person whose average income for a whole month being equal to $350USD, afford an iPhone. Even on contract? Globe asks for a considerable amount upfront. What would be 1/2 a months income for them. Just imagine, at no matter what your income leve is for a month, imaging taking half of it to buy a phone. How do you eat, or have money for transportation and family?

This is why Nokia, Blackberry and Google have made or are making a killing in these countries. Because they make phones people can afford.

This is the same BS that pushed Apple almost totally out the PC market.
I am not saying Apple isn't going to sell a lot of phones. WHat is going to happen with it is the same that happen with iPad. When APple made the 7" iPad, it started eating into the sales of the larger one because people bought it bec it was the only best option from Apple. 7" is better than 10" for the average person.

So what will happen with the phone? With almost all thing being equal...they are both the same size, they both have the same screen, they both have the same resolution, same components with exception of CPU/GPU and MP camera, everything else is roughly identical even down to the OS. The other choice is colors and storage and plastic or metal. For $100 you can just the better looking model, or you pay less and you get rainbow color choice. You can both use the same apps, have pretty much the same limitations. So what will happen is the better model will simply drop sales while the cheap one digs in.

This is why they are selling the 5C at $550. They still will get a high profit, but it wont be as high as the better model, but the lost could be covered by the volume in sales on the 5C.

In the USA $99 is pennies to pay. For someone overseas, that could be 1/3 of their monthly income. Sorry they still ant afford them and your sales wont be as high as they are here in the USA. Apple knows that. If they actually though the device was cheap enough, they could have only offered it in China. China has cities with over 1B ppl. If they all could afford an iPhone...or even 1/2 the population, they would have more sales then in the USA.

man i really hope neowin ant-boys would come up with something original. the comment sections are getting pretty stale with every apple launch event. lol.

People believe me there will be no different, same screen size, the only different it will be the iOS 7 Big Deal. .. and the price with 2 year contract still way higher .if you want to buy the phone with out contract it cost you $600 to $800 is this is cheap?

Same kind of articles every year. Apple is doomed! Yet they always do fine.

Keep dreaming of the Lumia selling well. The smoke is blinding you.

All the hardware specs are just guesses right now. Posting a news article saying the 5S is more of the same before the product is even announced is in poor judgement imo. At the very least, we guess it will have improved camera, more RAM, faster CPU, and fingerprint scanner.

They meant to say 5C. I am sure it has same specs as last year's iPhone 5.

Ah, that would make sense then. I think the 5C would basically just be a 5 in a plastic case. Just a low cost alternative. Not sure why it warrants a negative news article.

All iPhones since iPhone where the same, the only thing that changed was it's design and some updated hardware, nothing innovative about (even not about the original one)...

While the phone still sells out because the hardware on the phone is a small percentage of why people buy the iPhone. Careful, they may call you a chump.

Don't forget to send them an ad with your favorite products circled. People love it when you tell them how to spend their money!

Really! To who? Please for the love of God and animals and bugs, don't tell me its losing shares to Microsoft. Only two players in this game zipity zap, Android and Apple.

Because I argued otherwise? Losing market share is losing market share. And that is exactly what's happening to Apple and it's iPhone.

Apple is not losing market share. Their shares have always fluctuated because of their yearly release cycles. They are not pumping out new phones every month like Nokia. When these phones hit the market, watch the "spike" in shares. Next Summer, same situation.

You really are a fanboy huh.. the facts are out there. Apple is bleeding market share, you can deny it all you want.. there's a reason the iPhone 5C was announced you know and it's not for altruism. They are losing, and they need a product to fight the low to mid range which is eating into that share..

Apple isn't going anywhere, much like Microsoft isn't either just because they released Windows 8. Everyone's just up in arms having a... well, seeing as that word is censored, I guess a "urination contest" would be a more proper way of putting it.

No one's saying "Apple are going anywhere" either..
"market share" folks. That's all I'm saying.

They're being forced to compete more heavily, I agree, but they're still doing quite well for themselves.

The fingerprint reader on the Motorola Atrix years ago worked great. Dirt doesn't affect it, water depends on how much. Why would you use your phone with a wet hand though? The touch screen will detect the water too.

I don't expect anything this time, it looks like same stuffs just different plastic colors-- no innovation ????
Only finger print reader that might be more trouble sometimes when finger's wet or dirty. If it can not read your finger print that is just piece of plastic board $600 ??

Gotta love those people who can't afford to get out of their parent's basement but will camp out for a new phone. Marketing.

thats cause their PRIORITY is to have the latest and greatest piece of electronics, NOT to get out of their parents house at the age of 37.

Where is this coming from? Is this just another blind anti-Apple rant using made up facts about basement dwellers? You guys have got to become more original with your rants. It's getting stuffy in here.

Same screen size as last year is such a disgrace as far as Apple standards are concerned. I am not asking them to build phones in excess of 5.5" but a 4" screen next to 4.7" screen of Androids and WP8's just shows poor anticipation and planning from Apple.

I sincerely hope they wow us with 4.5" + screen just like they did with MacPro.

After getting used to Note 2, size does matter.

I won't really like bigger screens on a phone. 4" screen is nice size for me, in fact I'm still happy with 3.5" of the iPhone 4S. I used the Samsung S3 for a while and end up going back to my 4S. as the S3 felt a bit to big for me. Phone + Tablet = me happy.

It shouldn't be taking them 2 years to increase .5 inches. Its quite disgraceful with the way they keep releasing imprefect products because they know sales will be good and hence maximize profit.

It's the quality of the screen and apps that count. Okay, a bigger screen would give you more real estate, but for what you do on a mobile it probably wouldn't make a ground-breaking difference. Plus, most websites nowadays have mobile versions available that function perfectly on smaller screens. I'm an Android user by the way - in no way biased towards Apple, or any other company.

wow, didnt expect so many apple apologists, this is ridiculous. all these screens that at 4.5"+ now have more pixels per inch that the touted retina display so i dont know where the idea of sacrificing quality of size came from.

Apple engineer: hey everybody, forget increasing the size, this one dude over here likes the size and thinks the S3 is too big. cancel everything!

iPhone is plenty big enough - size of the flagship Lumia ang Gaxay are awful and laughable.

Yes, okay. But I bet as soon as Apple ships a phone with a fingerprint sensor, so will everyone else.

Windows Phone has a lot of areas needing improvement. I didn't see much change between 7 and 8 on the outside, but some much-needed features were added behind the scenes.

Well WP7 is CE based and WP8 is NT based. Pretty big difference right there. Because they look similar and have a similar name can trick people into thinking they're just a progression along the same line when they're actually completely different OS'es

I didn't notice that! Yes, that would have been a major (and much needed) upgrade.

Exactly. There is a significant difference between WP7 and WP8...

Lightning cable at the end.

Do kinda wish the next USB standard followed the whatever side still plugs in design though. I wonder why all connectors don't follow that. Saving on materials maybe.

I wish the standard would follow not plugin in anything anymore. works quite alright with my NL920. Plugin things in is so 2010 like

Yeah, the lightning connector makes sense when you look at the hideous micro usb 3.0 connector.

Why is it ever good when proprietary connectors are used instead of certified standards?

Something like AirDrop would be nice. If only Microsoft would include advanced WiFi features in their OS - Mac OS X (and most smartphones today) have had them inbuilt for a few years (ie. Internet sharing through WiFi) - but not Windows! Okay, it is possible, but you have to go through Command Prompt or install a third party app to do it. In 2013, I think this is pretty lazy on Microsoft's behalf.

I like the design of Lightning - it's solid and non-polarised. It would be a good replacement for the USB Mini/Micro B standard.

The problem is backwards compatibility, there's no way to make the micro USB 3.0 connector compatible with USB2 and still look nice as USB3 requires extra pins.

Neobond said,

Why is making a new certified standard not an option? Nobody is saying it HAS to be the proprietary connector. Make a new standard with the same concept.

Since Windows 7 WiFi sharing is easy.

I find the cable criticisms to be silly when Apple has changed their connector type a whopping total of what... one time?

All my other phones have gone through several different connector types. Hell, Samsung just got rid of their 30pin connector for their tablets too. I know people like to hate Apple here, but I'm pretty sure there's better material out there than this to criticize them for.
