As for ideas about editorials, I think you should do an editorial about how Vista is the same as Windows ME, that hasn't been done before. Oh, and make sure to do editorials talking about how evil corporations and DRM are going to destroy our way of life, the teenagers and plebs really love those. And one last idea... do editorials on how the PC gaming industry is going down the tubes.

Ah screw it, I'll just go read the Inquirer

I just hope that the writers to these editorials understand that no matter what they write, there will always be someone with their own opinion who wants to disagree and will probably not be too tactful about it.

Personally, I think the people who are the gatekeepers should try really, really hard to keep their personal opinions to themselves. Now if you found an interesting opinion piece from a third party publication, I would be interested as long as it was not disguised as news.

lol at MrCobra's comment. :P
We all know that is what is going to happen.

Seven best wallpapers (one on them by Stardock).
Five great products of 2007 (one of them by Stardock).
What features do you miss in Aero? (aka. we are looking for product ideas at Stardock)

Don't worry, we'll make sure we also cover things that are wanted/needed by people living in their parents basements who enjoy complaining about news items on an on-line website.

If an average member of Neowin had said this to someone they'd get slapped with a warning. An Admin says it and nothing happens? I saw someone say something similar along the lines of "why don't you go back to your basement and go back to playing WoW" and they got a 3 day suspension and a warning. What's that about?

Personal attacks aren't allowed right? He just personally attacked a few people on here (by implying they have nothing better to do but sit in their parents basement complaining on the internet) and nothing's going to happen?

This must be where the "unprofessional" in the neowin tag line comes from...

This site has become a complete joke if this is the way the admins think they can treat members.

That doesn't even pertain to me but you Brad are a total ******* and i'm not affraid to say it...especially if this is how you plan on treating the members from now on.

Well that comment above made me realize I was pretty stupid for ever buying any kind of Stardock product. If that's the type of guy this is then that will never happen again. I also agree that it's BS that he's allowed to treat members like that and get away with it. I've been suspended for comments that were nowhere near that bad.

Agreed.

Well if you make purchasing decisions based on forum comments of employees at a company then please, by all means, do not ever purchase any Stardock product again. In fact, all forum posters should include who their day jobs are for so that we can all make purchasing decisions based on how people talk on a forum...

It's amazing how thin-skinned hecklers can be. A dozen or so posts of people flaming Daniel and I and a quip back (with a smiley) results in people huffing about the injustice of it all.

If it makes them feel better, I am sorry that I made fun of their basement dwelling lifestyles. There's nothing wrong with someone being in their mid 20s or mid 30s and living in their parent's basements hanging out on a tech site posting frivelous flame bait comments. Is that better?

You're treating everyone like they're under you because you're part of Stardock and an admin here and that gives you the right to treat people like crap. It's BS you're allowed to make comments like that and have free range with it and nothing happens to you.

Here's why your comment wasn't needed:

The user CaKeY said:

As long as they're not ads disguised as editorials I think its a good idea.

Then you came in with the comment:

Don't worry, we'll make sure we also cover things that are wanted/needed by people living in their parents basements who enjoy complaining about news items on an on-line website. ;)

That was a personal attack towards CaKeY and anyone else who felt the same as them. Now why did you feel the need to flame CaKeY when your name wasn't even mentioned? It's pretty obvious by your comment that you took it to heart and felt it was aimed towards you. Now why feel that way unless you knew there was some truth to that?

I didn't like what you said because a good chunk of the users on Neowin use your products and you treat them all like they're under you. Then you want to imply that people on here do nothing but complain on the internet from their parents basements. I took that to heart because my dad recently died and my mom has been sick for 6 years so she lives with me so I can help take care of her. I also have some nieces and nephews that stay here? Does that imply that I'm a loser? Because I give a damn about my family?

About never buying Stardock products again. They're good products, but I don't want any of my money going to some guy who will treat his customers like crap while bragging about his new Jaguar.

Get the point now or are you going to come back to say you want to apologise while flaming people again?

Nothing happened to Cakey or the 3 guys who followed-up his comment with implications that editorials would be "cough stardock ads cough".

Well, first off, using the "see my previous news items" you will find that Cakey flames pretty much whatever I write regardless of topic. Secondly, there were 3 other comments in response to Cakey arguing the same point.

Using your argument - perhaps there is some truth that some people around here do live in their mom's basements and spend undue amounts of time trolling news item comments.

I didn't like what you said because a good chunk of the users on Neowin use your products and you treat them all like they're under you.

I don't treat anyone as if they're "under me". I simply feel the same freedom to tease as anyone else. I.e. several people (to be as polite as I can) teasing that anything I write will be an advertisement for my employer shouldn't have any problem dealing with me teasing back that maybe the reason they choose to nitpick the news item is because they have a bit too much time on their hands.

Then you want to imply that people on here do nothing but complain on the internet from their parents basements. Staying with your mom to help her doesn't make someone a loser. Hanging out on a tech news item writing nasty petty comments does. It just so happens that statistically, the people who happen to do this tend to be basement dwelling losers.

About never buying Stardock products again. They're good products, but I don't want any of my money going to some guy who will treat his customers like crap while bragging about his new Jaguar.

Where am I bragging about a Jag? You mean I talked about having a Jag on the Neowin car forum in which people asked what kind of car you drive? Admitting ownership is bragging? If I drove a 1984 Chevette (which I used to) would be bragging too?

Get the point now or are you going to come back to say you want to apologise while flaming people again?

If someone is going to be nasty, I have two options - I can tease back or I can use the power of moderation to take away posting priviledges. I suppose I could have just removed their posts and moderated them (as per http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=boardrules)
Rule #5 "No Flaming, Personal attacks such as flaming, instigating "flame bait", verbal abuse or mocking of members in forum posts are not tolerated at Neowin. Such posts will be deleted on sight and moderated accordingly."

But having a thicker skin is the way to go I think and so I teased back.

There's na old saying - don't dish it out if you can't take it. But by all means, this incident has made it clear that it would make more sense to delete the posts and remove the user rather than gently quiping back.

Could you guys make sure there's no other disaster like the "editorial" titled "Is Vista x86 a Trojan Horse for Windows7 (Vienna) after-all?"

Sorry, but that "editorial" was a joke and a complete disaster.

I'm just suggesting that when these people write their editorials that they know what they're talking about or have some of the other staff members go over editorials before they get posted. Hopefully that's already something that would be done?

great minds think alike

this won't be a good idea ... the last editorial was a total rant about vista x86 not being to run 4GB+

editorials are good if you want to look like a total ass or if you're named Paul Thurrott (ehh wait .. those 2 are the same)

It would be good if the person writing the editorial knows fully what they're talking about and maybe the staff members all read it first before it makes the front page so they can agree that it's a good editorial and the person knows what they're talking about in it.

Don't just give the person full power at posting whatever they want on the front page when they're done.
