NeowinCAST News Edition for March 9th, 2007

Neowin.net & PowerUser.TV present the NeowinCAST News Edition for the week of March 9, 2007. This week our panel consists of Christopher Vendemio (bangbang023) and Rob Wright (Rob). The gang discusses a new digital image format, Apple, the RIAA, and one very anti-Wii developer. Also, for the first time ever, the censors are called in because a certain cast member can't help himself. The topics are as follows:

  • HD Photo to end JPEG's dominance? (Read)
  • Apple CFO says Vista not a threat to Leopard (Read)
  • New RIAA Royalty fees for Internet Radio (Read)
  • Chris Hecker criticizes the Wii (Read)

you guys make my bus trip home on a monday the best trip of the week. Keep up the good work guys i know it must take up a lot of your time!

We hear a few good words every now and then, but those are some very kind words. Thank you. It may be a bit of work and I may bitch about the editing sometimes, but I do enjoy doing the show and it's nice to know others enjoy listening to me and Rob and Todd babble about whatever lol.

You bitch about everything, numbnuts.

Uh oh!
You played that song at the end!

RIAA is coming!
Hmm...let's get this calculated.
$0.0011 - Charge for 2007
100 - Listeners (Assumption based on current number of comments)

$0.0011 x 100
oMg0rz! You owe RIAA $0.0011 and counting!!!!

Great podcast though...........
I couldn't stop laughing throughout the whole thing :P

Did everyone go buy Titan Quest: Immortal Throne yet? I'm keeping track damn it. You are all going to die down here if you don't! We have balloons down here, and they float. You'll float too!

It rocked, but the book was better :D

I highly, highly recommend Titan Quest, and Immortal Throne. You can get Titan Quest for $20 US now, and the expansion is $30. If you like Diablo 2 style games, aka action RPG's with hack and slash and lootathons, Titan Quest is for you Plus graphically its very nice, and you can play the entire game coop multiplayer, yay.

Another great episode. Good work!

I have a few comments:

HD Photo to end JPEG's dominance?

I doubt HD Photo will be replacing JPEG anytime soon.

JPEG is primarily used for compressing photos. It's the format used in all digital cameras you buy at the store today.

Now, if the camera produces a low quality JPEG, what would you gain by converting the image to HD Photo? HD Photo isn't going to magically make your images look better.

Let's say your a professional photographer that produces RAW images. If you really cared about image quality you would convert RAW to PSD or TIFF.

So where does HD Photo fit in the process? The only way I see HD Photo making any inroads in the photo market is if the format is incorporated into digital cameras. But due to the restrictive licensing terms I don't see this happening too soon.

Apple CFO says Vista not a threat to Leopard

Has Apple's CFO been taking tips from Sony's Phil Harrison?

I think computers are currently hitting the point of diminishing marginal returns in terms of productivity. Most people do what with their computers? Email, surf the web, create documents? Windows, OSX and Linux do all this very well. It is very hard to improve what currently works. Unless computers start becoming much more intelligent we are stuck in this hole that we are in.

A pretty desktop is nice, but at the end of the day the user's productivity is more important.

New RIAA Royalty fees for Internet Radio

I'm a huge Pandora fan and would be sad to see them go out of business. The RIAA is just getting greedy.

Chris Hecker criticizes the Wii

Um, who is Chris Hecker again?

Why compare an OS which is not feature complete :(
You are (Chris) assuming that the Leopard upgrade is everything what we see now...its not...steve jobs has said there are features which they wont be showing for a while...Spaces, iChat update, Time Machine etc wont be the only features. Expect the other ones to be a hell of a lot better and more important.

Obviously we can only go by what the press and public have been told. And I do believe Vista, during its development, also stated that there'd be surprises and features that weren't announced. The place for OSX vs Vista discussions isn't right here, but I'm looking forward to those new features if they do indeed come to fruition. I'm a Mac user as well as a PC user so I have no affiliation either way; I just like discussing things!

Conversely, I think this is the most fun we've had in a while discussing things. The topics, with maybe the exception of the Apple story, really leave room for discussion and opinion.

The discussion isn't bad, but the second and fourth stories are a waste. I simply don't consider them really important because they are someone's opinion and PR stunts. "Look at me, I'm saying something controversial!"

Agreed. The whole podcast in and of itself is a huge joke. Got a brooklyn guy feigning to be smart and a teeny bopper as his cohort. yay.
