Netbooks now more popular than iPhone

Have we entered the era of the netbook? For those not paying attention a netbook is an ultraportable notebook. It's also an ultra-affordable notebook most often priced below $500. In recent months, the form factor has become so popular sales figures are rivaling Apple's iPhone, according to sales data.

According to the latest smartphone sales numbes from Gartner and DisplaySearch's netbook sales numbers, 4.7 million iPhones were shipped in Q3 2008, while a whopping 5.6 million netbooks were sold in the same period.

Actually, debates sparked a couple of months ago about Apple releasing a small notebook computer, in the form of a netbook. But Steve Jobs seemed to think that iPhones can do the same things as netbooks, even going on saying that "not a lot of them (netbooks) getting sold."

Riiiight. I don't own one, but in my lectures at University, there's about a 50/50 split between netbooks and notebooks being used to take notes.

They're fantastic pieces of kit

Yeah that's where you'd expect them. Extremely convenient for taking to lectures. Lugging a notebook every day gets tiring.

Yeah, and you even look good while holding your netbook on the ear and doing a phonecall.

Come on... two completely different things, who got the stupid idea of comparing them ?

Add Bluetooth and skype and i dunno alot cheaper less hooks ;)

But it's more aimed at the software and one of the uses of the platform not JUST the phone part as they're multi role device as smartphones are. HTC have a Windows mobile or did have netbook running winmo. They're priced usually same even though here in NZ iphone more then triple the price of netbook. So they're easy to compare.

Acer Aspire One, can't go wrong they're bloody awesome machines to have around :)

As for steve jobs's comments, atleast netbooks are more open, flexible and friendly platform.

Yeah, and 640k should be enough memory for anyone... For very rich people they can be quite dumb sometimes.

Bill Gates say it during in the 80's, where a bit expensive PC came with 64k of ram and a home microcomputer featured a whooping 16k or 32k ram.

So, yes 640k was enough for a least a decade.

Even then it wasn't enough....

Bill never said that.

There's even a page putting this one to rest once and for all on MS's own intranet. I wish I would've taken a screenshot when I was on contract with them.
