New Microsoft Surface TV ad spotlights Within Reason

Microsoft launched its first TV commercial for its Surface Pro tablet during the Grammy Awards on Sunday with lots of dancing and flair. However, that's not the only Surface Pro commercial Microsoft put out in the public airways on Sunday.

Microsoft also aired a second TV ad during the Grammy Awards that put the spotlight on Within Reason, the Alabama-based band that won Microsoft's "Gig of a Lifetime" contest. As part of their prize, the band was flown to Los Angeles to have a performance of one of their songs, "We'll Have It All," filmed for the commercial.

The CBS YouTube channel has also posted up another video that goes behind the scenes of the Within Reason-Surface Pro commercial, as the band members talk about how grateful they feel for the opportunity to have this kind of national exposure. They also talk about the actual filming of the commercial itself, which they said was done on the rooftop of an LA building with lots of crane cameras whipping around.

It goes without saying that the members of the band got free Microsoft Surface tablets as part of their contest win. It should be interesting to see if Within Reason's career takes off as a result of the ad. It's happened before. A year ago, Microsoft's Internet Explorer TV ad used the song "Too Close" by Alex Clare, which went on to be a major mainstream pop hit.

This is just awful. This shows me sweet FA about the product they are trying to sell, I felt like I was watching an advert for Within Reason rather than a surface pro.

This is why Microsoft's stuff isn't selling, no one has a damn clue what it is.
The previous adverts were the same (Wooo clicky noises!), the previous Nokia WP7 adverts were the same (woohoo pricks dancing around doing quirky stuff!) and now this.

Sell the damn product Microsoft, it works for Apple/Samsung.

Have to agree. Apple is all about product features.

I mostly agree with you on the other ads they've shown, but I'm not sure if this is a Surface ad (see the comment by AlterBridge82 below)

what a waste of money, it has nothing to do with computing. the ad firm they hired is doing all it can to make surface just a stage to promote nonsense.

The IE ad with Alex Clare Too Close isn't the only time MS used a song that went on to be a hit. The Bing "Discover Hawaii" ad used The Lumineers Ho Hey which also went on to be a big mainstream hit recently. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-FwaCz4yZ0

This is good for the credibility of Xbox Music that Microsoft is successfully helping lesser known artists go mainstream with their ads.

This is not meant to be a commercial, get your facts straight Neowin. It's a contest winning music video to give exposure to the band.
