New Nokia default ringtone dubstep inspired

Back in September, Nokia launched a competition to get the public to design them a new ringtone. The old Nokia ringtone, which had been through many revisions was starting to get tired, and the company knows it.

Skip forward to today, Nokia has announced that they have picked a winner. The new ringtone is dubstep-inspired and retains the roots of the instantly recognizable original Nokia ringtone.

According to The Next Web, Italian DJ Valerio Alessandro Sizzi entered the 23 second track and won the competition. Nokia Sound Design manager Tapio Hakanen explained why Valerio won by saying;

“The winner represents very much the sound of now with its energetic dubstep take on the Nokia Tune. It uses the 24-second running time cleverly having a clear intro, mid section and ending, all sitting nicely next to each other. This was one of the many examples of the Nokia Tune’s melodic flexibility.”

The new ringtone will be loaded on 100 million handsets, and will feature on all Nokia's phones in it's 2012 portfolio, including the company's upcoming "Sea Ray" device.

It could not have been an easy decision for Nokia to pick something to go next to a tone that has become so iconic around the world. The Nokia tone has (perhaps unintentionally) became somewhat of a cultural icon, even appearing in movies.

Check out the ringtone below.

that was not a good ringtone! Too much bass which on a phone doesnt sound so good and you cant hear it in loud envirounments, or if a phone is in another room.

i look forward to news reports of nokia users being whack to death by the public for playing this too loud too often.

As bad as the original...

The original actually wasn't that bad--based off of measures 13-16 of Grans Vals, I found it very pleasurable. If only more technology companies could use ringtones based off of 100-year-old Classical music. No matter what you use as music, you never go wrong with real music, it's when you use electronica and other genres that you come into discrepencies among other people. However, Classical music has a weird way of being preferable on almost any medium among everyone. In my opinion, Nokia should probably just look for another piece to base their new ringtone off of. It worked before...

Have you tried putting that ringtone on a Windows Phone 7? I just did, and it actually doesn't sound too bad. I'm going to try it for a while.

Nothing anywhere NEAR the iconic Nokia ringtone. It doesn't matter how much change Nokia plans on doing, but this ringtone is so....... random.

If I just got a new phone and that was the default ringtone, I'd have thought the phone was stuttering and sound were breaking up. I'd have taken it back. What a load of **** nokia. I don't usually use words like that but it really does sum it up.

Way to defile a 100 million handsets Nokia. Hopefully this isn't the default ringtone.

I wonder if they have the cojones to reverse their decision. Judging from the responses here and on Nokia's blog, an overwhelming majority seem to dislike it (and that's putting it lightly).

I see they're really trying hard to stay in business... of sinking the huge ship!
Boy, way to eff it up!

1. too long
2. too annoying
3. too "personalized" (this thing might be cool for a fraction of people, but it's not a general tone FFS)
4. minus voice and the heavy bass = might be of some use (secondary shipping tone or so at least)

Its so horrible, I don't understand the path of selfdestruction that nokia its going... There was so MANY better option. Its even worse that those hello motto ringtone.

Thats not a ringtone im sorry SOunds like how a DJ starts the dance floor for a long night out...

Compared to the WP7 std ringtones... This is very short if good... But then again i could see some people likeing it...

I'm not a fan of dubstep, but when I saw the headline I thought something decent could have come out of it. Yeah, I was wrong.

its not so bad.... but there could have been better ringtones. today i listened some free ringtones in WP7 site, they sound really better!.

anyway ive listened worse and more annying ringtones. and noone has to choose this thing as ringtone. but there will be people who will like it.

OH god NO. NO NO NO. NOkia, what are you DOING!? Public voting on things, ESPECIALLY on the internet, is complete TOSH.
NOKIA, DON'T DO IT.

This dude sounds like he's struggling to describe why the tune won! OH boy.

That's terrible. This is not built to last, as the original. Also it might keep business people from the device.

it may not sound that harsh once Nokia takes out the psychedelic parts. The background low sounds are good. But the heavy metal-like accents are what kills it.

It was a bit to fancy, to annoying, and to rocker/shocker. Imagine this. You are in YOUR office. It is so quite that you could hear a mouse pee on cotton. And YOUR phone which si turned up loud, rings with this ringtone.

Its way to fancy, way to long before it gets to the repeat. I am sure the choice wasn't easy. But this couldnt have possibly been the best choice.

I wish Intel made a phone, the Intel sound makes a perfect ringer.

Progressive Nokia was the best one in my option, new and electro but simple. But I don't think this is that bad, it's not going to replace it with a cash prize of only $10,000. I can see it as a optional ringtone marketed to fans of dubstep.

I really doubt that fans of dubstep would like this as a ringtone. it just make person using it look like a fool.

Agreed. And it seems like it got 10x as many Likes. Seems Nokia is ignoring the theory of the wisdom of crowds. (No cheap shots about the crowds preferring iPhones, OK).

Noooooooo! That's a bit too much noise going on for a ringtone. Good thing there's the option of changing it. I'd rather have a Steve Ballmer "Developers" ringtone than that noise.

If they selected that ... I have shivers thinking what the other entries might have been.

some of them (rarely) been good or at least ok. this one was among the worst, but on top all the time. sometimes I had a feeling they sorted it upside down and didn't notice..

It'll be interesting to see if the dubstep edition can retain that heritage.

I can answer that right now... No.

Thank goodness this only goes alongside the new Windows Phone style Ringtone. I shan't be using it on my future Nokia Windows Phone.

I REALLY HOPE NOT!! I am an OPEN MINDED PERSON but that is HORRIBLE!!

Yeah, if you listen to it backwards it says "Destroy this phone. That will stop the music..."

If you listen closely enough you can hear gaga in te mix..

They sure made it as obnoxious as possible. I hope they will see the light before loading this "music" as the default ringtone. The original ringtone is known worldwide and this will just strive to kill that precious recognition in a word of smartphones running MP3 ringtones and what not.

Who the hell would use that as a ring tone?

+1. I have absolutely no idea. But on that note, for the consideration of those around you, if you're thinking about using this ringtone, just don't...

my ears are bleeding!! btw, was that even a song?

omfg, nokia, you can do better:p

Audio of a car accident would be better...

Sound more like a background music they might use to promote a teen-orientated phone model... As a ringtone it's just stupid AND WAY TOO LONG.

Haha when will people realize Dubstep sucks? An entire genre of music that robs from itself (crappy double bass lines) only to sound IDENTICALLY TERIBLE across the board. Cool. Lets rave. I love electronica, I love dance music, but Dubstep is just obnoxious.

It's not that dubstep (btw, there are various types of it) is horrible as a whole, it's just that there is always a ton of subpar and beginner "musicians" that will spam and destroy any "trendy" genre out there. Just like this trance (again, in all flavours) turned to **** in no time.

it's all because digital audio workstations nowdays available to anyone with regular PC, but of course talent and skills aren't included (they're substituted with stupid presets).

Totally agree.

Really? Back when that ringtone was created, the Nokia phones were all the fame and young people did have them. It's too bad that most people like you associate Nokia phones with old and elderly slow people... The new Nokia Windows Phone handsets are for young people, and the ringtone matches it.

Yeah, young people have SO much brand loyalty. They'll buy it, if the device looks good.

My grandparents both have Telstra EasyTouch Discovery 2's, my Mother (who isn't that old but we'll throw in anyway) has a HTC Mozart.

I would hope. I think it's the worst ringtone I've ever heard... At least the Geico ringtone was catchy...

Worse. They got it by seeing which potential ringtone got the most likes on Facebook.

I'm all for variations on the classic digital phone sound effects, or even the fake analogue bell phone sounds.

This is horrible.

Actually, if anything it's old ladies who dont know how to change their ringer or think its hip to have a musical ring tone that would use this. High schoolers would instantly replace it with Blackeyed Peas. Personally, I prefer a standard old-fasioned telephone ringer.

Although, I do like that the new ring tone utilized the original tone.

I think you might have got part of why Nokia are releasing this... and its not because you love it. Any way they can get the public take notice of their new direction is good right now because they're making big loses and if they don't get back into the public's eye, even if its this way, then they're going to close up shop.

Bad ringtones on crappy phones for the hipsters and kids and a select few like yourself who actually like this 'dub step', then for the rest of us they'll re-release their ringtone to something else.

Personally, if I heard that in the street or at work, pub etc I'd not only think the phone was broken, stuttering peice of poop, but I can half expect it to sound really really tinny on a mobiles speakers.

This winning tone is not meant to replace the latest remixed version found on the N9 or on Symbian Belle & upcoming devices. It will just be preloaded on to a limited no. of phones in Nokia's portfolio for 2012 along with latest version of Nokia Tune currently available on N9. (http://brandbook.nokia.com/ser...aTune.mp3&download=true)

For the first time ever, we - together with AudioDraft - are asking you to create the next Nokia ring tone within select phones of Nokia's 2012 product portfolio. The winning entry will be made available on some 100 million devices where it will be placed next to the new default ringtone.
