Next-Gen - PS3 US Launch May Only See 150K Units

Hmm, just a rumor still? Or is Sony really going to only ship 150-200,000 units at launch here in the US on Friday? Guess my story from a few days ago wasn't so far fetched eh?

In a note to investors, Lazard analyst Colin Sebastian cited retail checks as the source for the figures.

Sony has said that it plans to ship 400,000 units to North America for the PS3's launch day, with between 1-1.2 million shipping by the end of calendar 2006. Recently, however, mega-publisher Electronic Arts estimated 2006 PS3 North American shipments to be a substantially lower 500K-800K.

Sebastian estimated that Sony would sell around 750K PS3s domestically by year-end. The analyst reiterated that consumers might substitute the Xbox 360 in lieu of the high-in-demand PS3 and Wii. Key Xbox 360 titles such as Gears of War and cross-platform PS3-Xbox 360 games could also accentuate this substitution effect in favor of Microsoft's console.

Sebastian added that he expects the Wii to sell 1.2 million units in the U.S. by year-end. He also said that videogame publishers in general will not immediately reap huge rewards from the launch of the PS3 and Wii this year. He wrote that Lazard anticipates less than 15 percent ($350-$400 million) of software sales to come from Wii and PS3, while more established systems such as the Xbox 360, PS2, DS and PSP will be key growth drivers for the holidays. Hardware manufacturers and retailers, however, will see a greater financial impact due to the launches.

the sad thing about all this is this just screws blu-ray over, which itself screwed ps3 over lol. I mean I really like blu-ray as a technology and the possibility of it, but IMO any chance of it being the format of choice has been screwed by Sony in only it's first year.

I am going to wait on purchasing a PS3 -- next year at the earliest.

On launch day, I am gonna drive by and see how long the lines are for the PS3, should be interesting.

Any takers on the going price for one on Ebay? $900-$1500?

There was a Japanese PS3 on ebay that was going for $2300 US I believe. If people buy them for 900-1500 or even 2300, they are morons IMO.

I prefer to call them customers:cool:

You got it all wrong. The 400,000 to be shipped in NORTH AMERICA is still on track. That's just how many systems are coming to the U.S.

This guy from America Junior is right. Nothing has changed, really. There will still be 0 to 10 PS3 per retailers' major locations. You will still have to camp out to get one. 99% of the people who want one, won't get one.

Who cares how many are going to be for sale. All these PS3 posts are annoying. Problem is there is still going to be alot of PS3 posts once ppl start reporting all the errors and problems with the system.

The people who actually want to buy a PS3 might care how many are available seeing as if they dont get one now chances are it wont be until next year that they can get one.

Sony said there would be only 80k units for the Japanese launch.

There were 88,000 sold. MORE than promised.

Lots of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) out there. Monday we'll know for sure just how many was ready to sell on the 17th.

They originally said 100,000 in Japan, then lowered it to 80,000

They only surpassed their lower expectations (and undoubtedly made that number extra low so they can look good beating it, look you fell for it)
