Nintendo 3DS ships February in Japan, US and Europe in March

At a Tokyo press briefing, Nintendo announced that its new 3DS handheld will release in Japan on February 26, 2011 for ¥25,000 (approximately $300). The device will then land in the US and Europe in March for an undisclosed amount. As reported by VideoGaming247, the initial launch will offer Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black colors.

During the presentation, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that a 3DS version of Wii's Virtual Console download service will feature Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles, with some "classic games" updated and re-released in 3D.

The company also announced the migration of Miis to the 3DS, and demonstrated the Mii creation studio during the press event. The feature allows users to photograph their face using the console's front-facing camera and automatically have it turned into a Mii. Images can then be converted into a QR code in wireless "tag mode" or as a file to the bundled 2GB SD card.

Nintendo did not share details of a software lineup. However, a video displayed at the event showcased numerous 3DS titles, including: Kid Icarus, Super Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil: Revelations, Samurai Warriors, Dead or Alive, Pro Baseball Spirits, Metal Gear Solid, Paper Mario, Chocobo Racing, Super Monkey Ball, Star Fox, Animal Crossing and a 3D version of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The Nintendo 3DS was first unveiled at the company's 2010 E3 press conference. The new handheld console uses a process called autostereoscopy technology to produce "3D effects without the need for any special glasses."

The price is not American dollars so it does not translate directly over to dollars. so do not complain about price till the americanand euro prices are released.

Yeah, only problem is the price, with some people like posters above who would rather go the crappy option and use the money on a Playstation 3/Portable... Which is a waste, as sony does not compete in my opinion. The PSP is way behind the 3DS... And the PS3 w/Move... I have a wii... 'Nuff said

And yet I still can't be entertained by a Wii... how strange...

To all of those that were whining about the price:

You all say that now and then next E3 we will hear "Nintendo 3DS has passed 2 million in sales!". lol. I hate to say it, but with the value that it provides and the fact that the down economy has hurt businesses and individuals alike, I expected this. It is something we have to get used to until everyone recovers from the recession. I, for one, would pay that price if I have it because it is a very cool little game system by the looks of it.

I wonder if we in the UK will get a £300 price tag xD

Well it's estimated at £200, but with taxes and all that. Plus the VAT going up in January It will be around £250.

They are a bit optimist, no? But they say worldwide so let's see, maybe in Japan they are more enthusiast regarding 3D than what I usually read here. On the other hand, it's always those who complaint who took time to post. I myself like stereoscopic 3D a lot so the 3DS is welcome even if I'm not sure I will get one.

By the first month, they likely mean march. But I think they will reach that, it looks a very smart console. I'm begging for this!

I'm laughing to those of you who say that they won't be buying one because its expensive, and in the end they will buying it anyways. XD

Indeed

Thirded, but I will be honest. It will be hard to hold off on buying one.

Still hoping for $229 in the US. Or $299 better include carrying case, extras, and a game.

Rather buy a PS3 with that 300 dollars.

Even though I think for that money you can almost buy an iPod Touch and have much more functionality, it's a solid piece of hardware that can stand up to the punishment of kids.

Apple, can't compete with this. Don't see 3D on the iPod Touch, it only RECENTLY got camera's, does not play great games such as Mario and Pokemon, not many GB,GBA games to my knowledge without jailbreaking, etc. Although I am getting both, I still think the 3DS will stand up stronger.

Please. The DS alone only has a few gems, the rest is garbage. While the iOS may be in the same state, it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. You can also try before you buy with a lot of the games in the store with their "lite" versions. There isn't any option like that for the DS, and the prices of handheld games is only going higher... So what if it'll be 3D? I wasn't happy with 2D!

Only a few gems? Have you looked at the DS library recently? it completely destroys the ipod's line up with ease.

$300 is a bit much for me.

Seriously, what a joke! The hardware is certainly not that powerful to warrant such a price. Yeah yeah, I get the R&D that went into it, but they'll be making plenty of money considering they're making a decent profit at release.

Sadly, this probably isn't the worst of it, as I'm expecting the game price hike to be more of a pain...

I agree, especially for a handheld device that in now way outdoes the graphic performance on devices such as the XBOX 360 & the PS3, which cost the same, if not less than that price. I understand that we're getting 3D here but it's not enough to convince me to pay that much money.
