Nintendo: Wii becomes fastest-selling UK console ever

Nintendo has announced that its Wii video game console has sold over 6 million units in the UK in less than three years to become the fastest-selling UK console ever.

"Figures released today courtesy of the UK's leading independent music, video and software performance and sales tracking company, Chart Track-GfK, show Nintendo's home console, Wii, has now sold more than six million units in the UK alone since launch."

The Nintendo Wii was released in the UK on December 8, 2006 and went on to claim the record in the week ending November 28, 2009.

"The landmark figure, achieved in less than three years on sale, makes Wii the fastest selling video game console in UK history and the quickest ever to reach six million units sold. Wii was originally launched in the UK on 8th December 2006 and officially passed six million UK sales week ending 28th November 2009."

Commenting on the 6 million sales figure, David Yarnton, General Manager of Nintendo UK added: "With its inclusive, family friendly and fun nature, we're very pleased Wii seems to have captured the imagination of over six million families across the UK and reached such a landmark sales figure in such a short space of time. We'll work even harder to ensure that the interest in Wii stretches over months and years, appealing to people of all ages and gaming experience."

This is like the only console that is for every age, compared to PS3 and 360 they all wanting the teenagers to play.
Too bad not all young kids decide to play on Wii, and play games and over the headset you hear screaming 10 years old. xD

i owned a nintendo wii, and the young kids loved it. ps3 has more features and is more useful, but appeals to teenagers upwards really. Swinging a controller to hit a tennis ball might seem tedious to us, but my friends 3 year old thought it was the business because above all else she could play!

Congratulations to Nintendo on making suce a quality console. The games on the Wii are amazing the new Super Mario Bros is endless fun, super smash brothers, da blob, House of Dead Overkill, all the classic console games, SNES/NES/Master System/Neo Geo are on there aswell. I still do play games on my PC aswell such as Half Life 2 etc but i think the Wii is still a top console and i chose it over an Xbox and a PS3 because of that.

This is quite reasonable. I might be considered a hardcore gamer, and although I rarely touch my Wii at all (I mostly play games on my pc or xbox 360), whenever friends come over to my place, it's Wii we are playing if anyone is in the mood of gaming mostly because majority of my friends are not gamers. People who never played any video game in their life, find it amazing after their first experience. So it's quite easy to see how those people go for Wii whenever they start thinking of buying a console or just to get a present for someone they know. Wii is a party console.

Regarding games, it's not Nintendo's fault that 3rd party companies keep releasing CRAP on the system.

Every time there is a big name release, there always seems to be a 75% chance it WON'T be on the Wii.

What DOES keep coming out on the Wii is tons and tons of shovelware.

I have a Wii, and it disappoints me every time a game I want comes out on another system. I think "why don't they release it on the NUMBER 1 system??"

So, Sony and MS is doing nothing right and it is purely down to luck that 3rd parties are selling games on their console and not on the Wii, since hey, is nothing the Wii or Nintendo could have done about. Riiiiiight.

Though I'm surprised, as if you release a good game on the Wii you probably should get HUGE sales as you probably are competing against yourself in game sales...

They maybe the fastest selling but overall if you count how much Nintendo makes vs Sony and M$, it'll sort of equal out seeing that Nintendo consoles cost less.

Yes, but Microsoft and Sony were taking losses on their consoles for a long time. Microsoft just started making a profit on their console not all that long ago and Sony I *believe* is still taking a loss (The Slim might have changed that, but I'm not sure). So, Nintendo has been making money on every console sold, while their competition has been losing money...

Just keep bashing the Wii like usual even though it outsells its competitors! Typical.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii - 56 million (units sold)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3 - 27 million (units sold)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360 - 31 million (units sold)

What's even funnier is that the PS3's and Xbox's units sold combined = 58 million vs. the Wii's 56 million. The Wii nearly matches its 2 competitors combined.

Yet I'm sure people will come up with excuses.

None of that matters when you have so many ****ty games. Right now that console is pretty much for 1st party titles and thats about it. Everything else besides resident evil 4 is a piece of **** on that console. I would have to say its a higher percentage of ****ty games to total 3rd party games than the ps2 currently has.

Wii has some very good "hidden gems". For example Zack and Wiki is a VERY good game but I bet you don't know it. Plus you forgot to mention Mario Galaxies, Metroid and most of all, Zelda. Unless of course you consider those to be ****ty games. In which case, I rest my case.

People bash Wii when their only interest is the cookie-cutter first-person shooter crap that isn't as popular on Nintendo's console. It's a shame that they are missing out.

The new Super Mario Bros. games are awesome. I know it's hip and popular to bash Nintendo, too bad the sales make them look so foolish.

Oh, and Wii!

Wow. Are those figures accurate? If so, I'm impressed, I had no idea it had sold THAT well...

Told you they'd come up with excuses.

You are 100% on that statement. It seems Wii is for more intelligent people rather than for people who like mindless violence in games.

I'd just like to point out that Gotenks98 was saying that most of the Wii's good games are first-party, and all the games you mentioned, bar Zak and Wiki, are first-party, so he doesn't really consider them "****ty".

I do think his comment is on the ball, though. In the two years (Christmas 2006 - Christmas 2008) I owned the Wii, I owned only ten games overall; three of them were terrible (PDC Darts 2008, Red Steel, GT Pro Series), and they were all third-party games. Of the other seven games I liked, only two were third-party (Super Monkey Ball, Mortal Kombat Armageddon), and the other five were all made by Nintendo (Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, Warioware, Big Brain Academy).

Now think about how much Nintendo profits from 1st party titles, plus cheap hardware, compared to MS, which relies on XBL for profit, and Sony which is all screwed up.

That may be but Nintendo makes a profit each time they sell a console, MS and Sony make a loss, that makes a difference.

So? What's that have to do with this article?

My comment is on topic. Much more so than your comment. Thx k bye.

Game sales won't change the Wii's status as the fastest-selling UK console ever. So no, they do not tell a different story.

what said,
So they might make a decent console next time around.

Rather than make lots of money? Just look at Nintendo's revenue and you will see that they are doing something right. It is a business after-all.

True. But someone could misconstrue the meaning from sell numbers to profits.

Indeed it does.

Was this with the last architecture change? I do remember this, but it doesn't feel like it was all that long ago.

As stated above, Nintendo does make a profit on console sales. That has always been the case, they did not take a loss, even when initially launched... That equals profit for them.

+1. That was my point above.

From game and XBL sales, not from hardware. The estimate going around is that MS loses ~$300M annually on entertainment division operating costs, but makes double that from XBL subscriptions and games that MS publishes.

Revenue from our Entertainment and Devices Division decreased across most lines of business including Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue which declined primarily as a result of decreased revenue per console due to price reductions during the past 12 months, partially offset by increased console sales and Xbox Live revenue.
