Nokia Lumia 1020 launching in U.K. on Thursday

With so much attention being lavished on the upcoming Lumia 1520 phablet lately, you'd be forgiven for forgetting about the 'other flagship' that Nokia announced just two short months ago.

That device is, of course, the Lumia 1020, featuring a mighty 41-megapixel camera, and Nokia has just confirmed that it will finally launch in the U.K. this Thursday.

As we reported in July, the 1020 will be available in the U.K. on Three and O2, while retailers Phones 4U and Carphone Warehouse have also confirmed that they'll be stocking the handset. Virgin Media has confirmed that the 1020 won't be joining their range, while Vodafone and EE have so far remained quiet about whether or not they'll be offering it. O2 will exclusively offer a 64GB version, while other operators will have to make do with the 32GB version only.

No word yet on pricing, but at least there's not too long to wait until all is revealed.

So looks like the Lumia 1020 won't be releasing today as noted in the article title but according to Three's website, orders should be delivered on the 24th. Cheapest is £34 a month with £70 upfront for 2 years.

Nokia seems to be trying to create a space in tough industry. Other major players in telecom include Apple and Samsung. Nokia seems to focus on camera whereas others have advertised about their apps and 3G facilities. We will have to wait and see how this picks up with the users. If Nokia manages to increase its space in smartphone industry through its camera, then new race will be about including high-tech digital cameras in smartphones.

Is that actually confirmed by Nokia, or your interpretation of the tweet? If the later, then that's one interpretation of that tweet, the other more likely interpretation is that we'll get the launch date announcement on Thursday, which is likely to be either the 26th or 27th of this month.

Considering most carriers/resellers are still showing "register for info" pages for the Lumia 1020, I find it hard to believe the device would launch on Thursday with little to no major marketing. (don't get me wrong I would LOVE the Lumia 1020 to launch this week as I've been bugging nokia since the announcement lol).

This pretty much smells of "Apple is announcing new iPhones, so we need to keep people talking about the Lumia 1020".

Then again...I could be pleasantly wrong

Got tweets from both ThreeUK and O2 as to what the pricing may be but all they're saying is wait until Thursday, so either a) they're not allowed to say until Thursday when either I) the phone is suddenly released or ii) the release date of the phone is unveiled or b) they just don't know until Thursday when Nokia possibly makes an official announcement...

I am currently in two minds as to what phone to upgrade to, I've been waiting for a pureview windows phone camera to appear ever since the 808 and the 920 was a good step except it didn't have the same camera but now I'm really interested in the new Sony Xperia Z1 which looks really good and O2 are currently giving away the Q10 addition with online orders.

Again, I will happily be wrong on this, but I'd go for option ii for Thursdays announcement.

I'm a Windows Phone fanatic and have been waiting for the 1020 for a while now, however even I've been seriously impressed by the new Sony Z1. Would happily see them break Samsung's stranglehold on Android and would be even happier if they got into the Windows Phone game too

Strange with all the hype I didn't actually realise it hadn't been released here yet. Wasn't planning on getting it, tempting as it is, because I feel it's better to wait for something with a higher res screen with GDR3.

It's all about what you think is more important, a 1080p screen or the great pictures the 41MPix camera takes? Honestly though I think a updated version of this, probably coming mid 2014 or so, with quad core will make it even better. While the 1020 does take great shots there's a small delay, ~2seconds, while it processes the image, because it's so big. It's pretty much pushing the dual core snapdragon to the max at that time so a updated 1030 or 1050 with quad core will once again speed it up to how it is with the other Lumia phones.

A decent point indeed.
Any idea how big the file sizes are of these images?

You could probably tell people the 1280x768 display is actually 1080p and they'd never know otherwise.

It has a pentile screen unfortunately so that's not going to work

No idea actually. I haven't seen anyone actual say what the size is of the full picture it takes because it also takes a small 5MPix copy so you can share it at that time if you want.
