NOTICE: Essential Server Maintenance

Neowin will be offline for a brief period today for a short maintenance window in which the servers that run the site are being re-racked at the datacenter. This will require all six servers to be shutdown, removed from the racks, and reinstalled. We anticipate this work will take no longer than 30 minutes, but should complications arise, the work may take slightly longer. I will be on hand throughout the work to ensure the servers come back up promptly, and without issue when they are reinstalled into the racks.

This work is scheduled to be carried out around 10am EST (see other time zones).

We thank you for your patience whilst this essential work is conducted.

Keep your eyes open in the coming weeks for more exciting announcements from the development team.

If I am correct, DC is in Southfield which has HORRIBLE traffic in the morning usually so I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't there yet.

Since Neowin IRC is going to be down during the maintenance as well I took the liberty of creating a replacement channel on Freenode. As a service for the IRC addicts like myself.

irc.freenode.net
#tmpneowin

IMO, Neowin when restoring service and posting a frontnews article about it, should mention Mephistopheles for helping out

Just out of interest and curiosity to know what hardware is behind running a site the size of Neowin, any chances on providing the server hardware and specs?

Hm... Will this lead to anything new? Just curious. I love Neowin, so I'll be back when it's back up. It sounds like the downtime was unavoidable.

Hopefully when I wake up, the site will be online :)

I assume IRC andnother services, including mail will be down for 30 mins too?

IRC will be down yes, email will still work fine as it is hosted offsite by Google/Microsoft

30 minutes to re-rack 6 servers?? Nice, then again I suppose you'll have more than 1 person doing it ;)

There are 6 servers to come out, but only 5 to go back in, as one is very old and dying, and has been replaced with a virtual machine running on the new box we purchased this month. The *main* part of the site runs on the MySQL server and two apache boxes, these three machines will be prioritised for reinstallation, so while the other two may not be reinstalled, the site will be up and running again.

Apache?? MySql? I would have bet that neowin runs on IIS and MS-SQL...

have you consider that? I think It would be nice to see an article about neowin's arquitecture to handle the load and how it has evolved since the beginning...

anyways... the sites rulz! keep up the good work

I am sure that there is a thread on this, somewhere. I have seen this information posted by staff before.

WHAT?!?!?! Neowin OFFLINE?!?!

What on earth will I do in that timeframe! I'm scared to go outside... :(

And Rappy would DIE!

I dunno man, I've just heard its this strange new world filled with mythical creatures called "Humans," and that there's this big yellow ball that goes around something they call "the sky" and every so often it turns off and gets replaced by a big white ball.

*shudder*

That would have to be twilight...

mmmm - and why can't they be shutdown and moved 1 at a time so there is no downtime?

That's the ideal situation, but because the server that runs the database needs to be moved, we cannot avoid a small amount of downtime whilst that one is relocated, so we may as well just move them all at once.

In a few weeks time, we will have the new server we recently purchased fully operational, and that will take on secondary database roles, which would allow us to get through a procedure like this with 0 downtime. Our current secondary MySQL box just doesn't have the power required to run the main site whilst the main MySQL server is offline
