NPD Group: Nintendo tops November hardware with DS and Wii

The NPD Group, the top game-industry research firm, has released its list of the top selling video game hardware for the month of November. Hardware sales totaled $1.05 billion for the month despite being down year-over-year by around 13 percent.

The month's most popular console was the Nintendo DS selling over 1.7 million units and overtaking both the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Sony's PlayStation 3 claimed the 4th spot on the list, selling over 710 thousand units.

"All hardware systems realized an increase over October but one would expect that from seasonality alone ," said NPD's Anita Frazier. "I was really impressed by the performance of the PS2, which after 109 months in market is still experiencing strong sales (Nov'09 unit sales of over 200K – only a small decline from last November).

"While there has been a lot of focus on Wii sales as compared to last year, the system was still the best-selling console system by a margin of 54 percent. At this same point in the PS2 lifecycle, the PS2 was down in unit sales by 23 percent over the previous year, but as history has shown, it continues to have a great deal of life left in it. So focusing on a comparison to Wii's stellar 2008 performance masks the reality of just how well this system is selling.

"The PS3 realized the greatest increase over last year's November sales and had its third best month in unit sales ever, coming in just under Decembers '07 and '08."

Full list is below.

  • Nintendo DS – 1.70M
  • Wii – 1.26M
  • Xbox 360 – 819.5K
  • PlayStation 3 – 710.4K
  • PSP – 293.9K
  • PlayStation 2 – 203.1K

PS2 and PS3 sales combined total 910k. When compared to solo 360's 810k sales, it's interesting to speculate who the real winner is.

Wii has a ton of hardware sales, but how many game sales? Not arguing Nintendo's profit off it, but clearly people buy a Wii but don't use it, in comparison to 360 and PS.

NDS on the other hand... Nintendo is killing once again. Too bad their's only 1 or 2 Wii games worth my time. I loved all Nintendo's other systems. A real shame.

Have you looked at software sales charts? PS3/360 may have a lot of top sellers, but its not like Nintendo's games aren't up there as well. The new Super Mario Brothers, Mario Kart, Wii Fit Plus, and Wii Sports Resort are selling like crazy.

"Clearly people buy a Wii but don't use it"? Uhhhh how did you conceive of that idea? They wouldn't continue to sell so well if it wasn't a popular console.

If you can only find 1 or 2 games worth playing on the Wii then you aren't looking hard enough.

Go go PS3!...

You have noticed that it sold less than the 360 despite it's new model and mammoth price cut... right?

The Wii figures are not surprising though... Wii always sells well at Christmas with the family crowd who want something fun and energetic to play with their family at Christmas.

Makes me wonder what a 360 slim type SKU would do for overll 360 sales.

Its not possible to have a slim 360. It'd simply melt.

Not surprised to see the numbers for the 360....all the pirates had to buy another one thanks to MS lol

Well thats their own fault lol
I hope MS do it again and again.

We all pay good money for games why should these losers cheat developers out of money.

I never thought wii had such big sales figure.....
I thought PS3 would have taken the 2nd spot with new slip model and price drop.
