O2: Windows Phone 7.8 will be launched by the end of the month

Earlier today we reported that Nokia has updated some of their apps and that they now require Windows Phone 7.8 to be installed. This prompted some speculation that the update might be released really soon. Now there seems to be some further proof to fuel our collective optimism.

British carrier O2 has stated earlier on Twitter that this is indeed the case. Responding to a follower's question they mention that Windows Phone 7.8 will be released by the end of January and that users will be able to upgrade their phones via the Zune software.

As our readers know, WP 7.8 doesn't bring too many additional features but it does bring the ability to better customize users' start screen with resizable tiles as well as a wider range of color themes. The Bing auto-changing lockscreen will also be present though it's still not very clear if third-party apps will be able to use this feature or if it's restricted to first-party ones. There are also some general bug improvements, as with any update and there will likely also be some OEM specific firmware upgrades.

O2 is the first carrier to confirm our earlier suspicions that WP 7.8 would be arriving by the end of this month. As we get closer to the actual launch we can expect other carrier to speak out. Let's just hope they won't delay this update like they did with previous ones.

Release date was never announced, but it was implied that it would be coincidental with the launch of Windows Phone 8.

So, since the 7.8 update was assumed to be released in mid-November, it's 2 months late.

Yeah, totally like Android. /s

It's not late..Since it has never been said by Microsoft nor Nokia that it would launch with WP8. It didn't have any date what so ever.

That was never implied... Microsoft stated quite clearly and repeatedly that it would come out AFTER WP8 shipped and anyone with sense figured Q1...

Nokia, O2, T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone all have the 7.8 update sitting on Nokia servers for the 710
Nokia, O2, T-Mobile, EE, and Orange have the 800 updates on the servers

lol you say "We just need one carrier to release it, then the XDA guys will take action!"

Then you say you don't want XDA ROMs because they are not bug free ?

Which phone do you have ?

CAB updates.

They have all individual updates so you can update your phone without the need to flash it. It updates trough Zune and the CAB send tool as a regular update.

I have an unlocked AT&T Samsung Focus 1st gen, I don't know when would I get the update because I'm not on AT&T network, and my carrier doesn't have the Samsung Focus.

Is this for everyone? Or just for O2?

My understanding is that this is about O2; said that I am hopeful that others will follow soon.
The point is that moving to 7.8 is obviously not a big problem for the kind of people who follow Neowin or similar sites, Navifirm is our fried, at least till the end of the month.... , but the average user has been waiting very long for 7.8. Too long IMO....

This is only official for O2. However most other carrier should follow shortly, and unbranded phones should get the update even earlier. The only place that might see some really long delays are the States

Isn't Navifirm just for Nokia?

And custom rooms are not 100% bug free.

Navifirm Plus is Nokia's servers yea, you can flash stock ROMs from Navifirm without waiting for custom ROMs, I have 7.8 on my Lumia 710 via navifirm

This is true in theory, but in practice it never happens this way. I have a Samsung Focus from ATT that was unlocked and unbranded and is now being used under T-Mobile when I don't use it with Vodafone in my trips to Europe. For all intents and purposes I should be able to get the update the moment MS releases it via Zune, yet it always takes a long time for it to trigger and I always end up having to resort to different update forcing methods. It's so annoying.

Well there are other Windows Phones. I have a Samsung Focus 1st gen.
