Old MobileMe users get one more free year of iCloud storage

Apple's MobileMe online service shut down on June 30, but well before then, the now former users of MobileMe received free data storage on Apple's iCloud service if they transferred their accounts to iCloud. That free offer was supposed to end on Sunday, September 30th. Now, Apple has unexpectedly decided to give those old MobileMe users a one year extension.

Apple's support page now says that old MobileMe users who moved their account to iCloud between October 12th, 2011 and August 1st, 2012 will continue to receive free storage until September 30th, 2013. There is no word as to why Apple decided to keep this rather nice offer going for one more year.

Just a reminder: The free amount of storage comes in the amount of 10 GB, 20 GB, or 50 GB, depending on how much those former MobileMe customers were paying for the service before Apple shut it down. Those same users will see their free iCloud space go away ahead of the new deadline if they decided to purchase a cloud storage upgrade. If they decide to cancel their upgraded storage plan, they will go back to Apple's free 5 GB of iCloud space. We are betting that those former MobileMe users will stick with the free offer for another year.

I had a customer who did not transition by August 1. it totally SCREWED her data on the iPhone and Mac because the Mac could not Sign Out of MobileMe to sign into iCloud properly and the IOS6 upgrade upgraded the wrong Apple ID to iCloud overwriting the Calendar from MobileMe. Apple's solution is just tough luck, you should have transitioned, but the didnt get the emails about this because they didnt use MobileMe for email, only Sync.

Restore the calendar from a backup (Time Machine) and export that.

Then reimport into the new account.

If they don't have a backup, well... indeed, tough luck.

As crappy as that is.. There was plenty of news about it, and Apple did inform them on the e-mail account of which it would affect. There was such a long period for a transition to happen.

It used to say that my iCloud subscription was till 2050.
...... still does not convince me to buy extra storage when time is up. Apple may have noticed this as well. Hence we are in some kinda loop.
