Ouch! PS2 beats PS3 in sales in April

According to the latest NPD Numbers, the Playstation 2 has beaten the Playstation 3 in number of console sales. That is not good news for Sony as the 9 year old console is kicking its less then 3 year old siblings butt.

The biggest reason for this is most likely the price drop that occurred last month to the Playstation 2 system, and also it does not help that it's older brother is the most expensive console in town. As E3 approaches, the pressure is only building for Sony to do something about the price of the Playstation 3 console.

But in terms of all the other consoles, nothing has really changed. Nintendo is still dominating and Microsoft continues to put up respectable numbers. Here are the NPD numbers for the month:

April's best-selling software:

1. Wii Fit w/Balance Board (Nintendo, Wii) - 471,000 units
2. Pokemon Platinum Version (Nintendo, NDS) - 433,000
3. Mario Kart w/Wheel (Nintendo, Wii) - 210,000
4. Wii Play w/Remote (Nintendo, Wii) - 170,000
5. The Godfather II (EA Redwood Shores, 360) - 155,000
6. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom, 360) - 122,000
7. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, NDS) - 119,000
8. Mario Kart DS (Nintendo, NDS) - 112,000
9. Guitar Hero Aerosmith (Neversoft, 360) - 110,000
10. The Godfather II (EA Redwood Shores, PS3) - 91,000

And the hardware numbers:

1. Nintendo DS - 1,040,000 units
2. Wii - 340,000 units
3. Xbox 360 - 175,000 units
4. PlayStation 3 - 127,000 units
5. PSP - 116,000 units
6. PlayStation 2 - 172,000 units

There hasn't been a new game on the PS2 in years, and I don't know anyone who knows anyone who has bought one within the past three years. Who are these people who still buy PS2s, and why are they doing it?

well playing old ps2 games :P or Playing "backups"

for instance while i do have mine ps2 in perfect state , i tend to play my ps2 games with the ps2 emu for pc , mainly the old rpg's games i love ( more like asking myself why certain pc rpg games arent like the ps2 ones )

There are plenty of j-rpg's that still worth playing , beside quality , longevity of those games its huge compared to the 10h-20h gameplay and longevity that a few new games have

For the Wii well its simple , every "single home" has it due to the Fit game , its cheap , and better than doing the Tradional methods ( call it - well its High Tech Training ) and well they have more "Family" oriented games

If you like RPGs, JRPGs in particular, you're probably going to be playing most with a PS2 or a DS. They're still coming out for the PS2. One was just released last week :).

So actually it's like this:
1. Nintendo DS - 1,040,000 units
2. Wii - 340,000 units
3. Xbox 360 - 175,000 units
4. PlayStation 2 - 172,000 units
5. PlayStation 3 - 127,000 units
6. PSP - 116,000 units

I have a Wii and i'm still trying to figure out what people are doing with it... DS makes sense to me.

Yea. Nintendo is the surprising winner here. I didn't like the Wii but the DS Lite I have is nice. I don't know about the DSi (I still have old GBA games...)

Doesn't matter that much except add to the thrashing the regular DS is dishing out. i'm sure it doesn't matter to Nintendo at this point, whether the DSi succeeds or not, they've already gotten their money back per se.

$99 vs $400 console, it almost beat the 360 as well, 174k a low number for it considering it's been doing around 300 odd for the last few months.

Very low month for everyone apart from the DSi, even the Wii is down from around 720k from last April.

To be fair, even though I'm a terrible xbox fanboy etc etc yawn yawn... the PS2 is nearly beating the 360 as well! Weird figures.
