Planetside 2 could stay online until 2025

Planetside 2 may have launched just a couple of weeks ago, but the development team at Sony Online already has plans to extend the content of the free-to-play sci-fi shooter MMO for the next few years. In fact, Sony Online head John Smedley indicated in a new blog post that the game could stay online for a very long time.

In his post, Smedley said:

We have games that have run for over 13 years, so when we're making Planetside 2 we aren't looking at what it's like in 2012. We're thinking about a game we plan to have running in 2025.

After writing extensively about the game's various features (massive outside combat with thousands of players at once, vehicle combat and more) Smedley gives some hints about what new content Planetside 2 will be getting in the future. He states:

First off, we have a 3 year plan. That's really big. We plan on putting that out to the users at some point in the near future. This isn't some "vision" we plan on imparting on our players. It's our thoughts on what we think would be cool.

The list of possible content additions (Smedley makes a point to say some of these plans could be scrapped) include player-owned bases, support for harvesting resources, NPC enemies and armies, many more weapons and vehicles and more.

An example of one of those future vehicles was posted on Smedley's Twitter account this week, and it looks massive. It's a Bastion Fleet Carrier and Smedley hints it's designed to carry tanks. Planetside 2 will also have a Mac version at some point, along with some eSports support, with Smedley saying, " .... we plan on doing this pretty soon after launch. We plan on making this a big big thing and putting a lot of our resources behind it."
