Playboy releases entire catalog on hard drive, easy to hide

In a world where printed media is struggling to cope with the digital age of distribution, companies who survive on this type media are always looking for ways to stay afloat and compete with their online competitors.

We've heard for a long time now that hard drives are capable of storing countless bits of information, from book after book to endless libraries of music and video content, and now it seems Playboy Magazine has caught onto the idea too. According to the LA Times, Playboy plans to release every magazine it’s published from 1953 to 2010 in digital form, placing every issue on a 250GB external hard drive. Playboy hopes this archive will increase sales and the popularity of their magazine, as both have been dwindling in recent years.

Playboy hyped the device up with the following statement, “Why would you let more than 650 of your favorite Playmates celebrate the holidays in a damp garage, stashed under your bed or crowded together in the basement, when you can bring them all together beneath the mistletoe this year?" The hard drive will retail for $300 and has 57 years worth of magazines stored.

Playboy has partnered with Bondi Digital Publishing company, who specializes in digital content distribution and will assist in the creation of this magazine archive.

This hasn't been the first time a media company has distributed mass content via digital form. National Geographic released a hard drive full of 120 years worth of issues, retailing for about $200 last year.

LA Times went on to note that for the past few years, retro items have been Playboy's largest profit generator.

It still remains to be seen whether or not such a device will help printed media stay a float in this very competitive world of online distribution.

cool idea, even for the engraved HD... i'd like the pics to be super high-res, and if it's true that everything only takes up 50 gigs, i wonder what resolution they are...

No more sticky pages.

is always a bummer when you flick back and the page was sticky because you know whatever it was, it was good.

"We've heard for a long time now that hard drives are capable of storing countless bits of information"

I've read no such thing.

but you've heard it?

"Easy to hide"? Hide maybe, but not disguise. The Playboy logo is right on the drive.

On a side note, at least the pages won't get stuck together!

wife: "darling what are you doing taking your hard drive to the toilet ???"
husband: "just reading the articles...."

Well as "Tha Bloo Monkee" said, gone... Just like all other kinds of digital data that you don't keep any backups of...

Seeing as a collector, some of the originals are extremely hard to find, and very expensive to collect.

My questions would be:

Is the HDD pretty much full with the content already on there?
Is there going to be digital content to add, such as future editions to the magazine that you can easily add to the drive?

Otherwise, it's just an archive of the magazine.

The hard drive has about 200GB remaining for other storage uses.

As for the other question, none of the sources I have currently offer that information.

If you don't mind my asking, how do you know this? Do you have this collection or know someone who has?

Makes me wonder, if there is around 200GB free space, why did they release it on a 250GB HDD?

Simple, if 200GB is free that means the content takes 50GBs, while you could put it all on a pair of 32GB or one 64GB USB Flash drives either one of those alternatives would be more expensive that a lot of the external 250GB harddrives out there...
And have you seen any external harddrives that is less than 250GB these days? you might find one with around 150GB with some "luck" but they are rare...

The first thing that jumps out to me if that is true is that the files arent really that large in filesize. If they are images, how great is the quality? If the entire catalog is only taking up 50gb.. I duno maybe that should be sufficient enough for the pictures but theres alot of wasted space on the hard drive then.

I would love PC Gamer magazine to go digital with a external flash drive they send you if you choose the digital option IMHO.
