PlayStation 4 features and UI shown off in leaked video

A video revealing the features and UI of the PlayStation 4 console from Sony has been uploaded to YouTube and was posted to our forums by Audioboxer

The leaked video which has been recorded in French comes with commentary from the uploader where he outlines features such as Trophies, PSN Store, Profiles, Messages, Friends list, etc.

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 back in February, but has been revealing its features in parts over the past few months. The initial launch just showed off the DualShock 4 controller while the design of the console was revealed in June. PlayStation 4 will arrive in stores during the Holiday season and will go head to head with Microsoft's Xbox One in the next-gen console wars.

The PlayStation 4 launches in the US on November 15 and in Europe on November 29.

I don't want to be hater but UI is just not user friendly at all, You can't read what you selecting unless you already know options. text is too small for screen that size. I Like XONE UI much better

They really couldn't change the interface over 7 years. You would think they would make it feel like a PS4 and not just a PS3 with better hardware.

On a 50" @ 14' that UI is unreadable for anyone with vision problems.

This is what bothered me about PS3 and a deciding factor in selling it.

Sony is supposed to be a leader in home electronics, but they can't even make a readable UI.
Saaaaad.

Glad someone has figured out the 10' experience, and that my pre-order is in that camp.

That is a personal/user issue, not an issue with the UI.

ANY HD television/monitor maker would not recommend viewing a 50" display at 14 feet.

For a 1080p display you should be 6.5 feet away. 720p is 9.8 feet.

Sony's UI falls well within established standards.

Well in all honesty they dont really need to spend much time on the interface. They know what they are good at and that is single player GAMES. Im sure online will better this time around but still people get playstation for single player games. People who want anything else get xbox.

still doesn't justify the poor UI with such small and unreadable text size. almost 90% of screen is empty in most screens yet you cannot read anything from I assume a close distance

I'm surprised no ones brought up all the "empty space" this UI seems to be wasting.

That's where beautiful dynamic wallpaper looks great .

It's good visual design.

Yes, it should have buttons and widgets all over the screen, even if they don't do anything.

No, you space and size the stuff that does do things to fill and balance the area. It's the same as don't center someone's face in a photo as it leaves a bunch of empty space on the top. The rule of thirds is your friend.

Ok I see what you're saying now after watching the whole thing.

I prefer to read what I am selecting rather than seeing a big ass wall paper. or wall paper is for screen saver or a Picture library app.

PSN no longer free with PS4 and The UI doesn't bing anything new! We do focus more a game but those feature is also pretty important as it's part of how we gonna navigate the entire system.

PSN is free, plus is required for multiplayer. However the free PSN+ is not required for Netflix, Hulu, and other video streaming apps. PSN+ also get a lot of free games, however to access those games, you have to have a active PSN+ subscriptions.

I prefer a clean, easy to user interface vs one that's cluttered myself. I also prefer the Vita's User Interface over Nintendo's 2/3DS.

But its also none shared, an xbox live gold account on the xbox one will allow the same features to be used by all users of the console. A big plus for the living room but admittedly not much use if its in some kids bedroom where only he/she uses it.

once again showing sony's UI hold the top award for boring, uninspiring and confusing. there is no reason to hold back at this point: the PS4 lacks a hypervisor so the game OS will suffer from the same multi-task crippledness the 360/ps3 suffer. sony merely wants to hide that as much as they can.

It does indeed look like a bland evolution of the PS3 UI and color scheme.

There's also twice as many dislikes than likes on the video already.

If you read the coments people seem to be downvoting the video because of the annoying voice and music on top of the original audio.

Pretty much this. I couldn't even watch the video with his stupid voice. Ugh.

I like it, clean and simple without being bombarded with graphical nonsense which does nothing but 'look cool'. I'm really glad they kept a similar structure to the PS3. They could've gone with a more Vita like experience. Which looks very cool and all. But would be more of a hindrance on a controller vs the touch screen.

As long as it works better than the current PS3 UI (faster loading and all) I'm ok with it. If it works as intended I'd hope the spend more time on games than on the UI.

All I'm seeing on this video is blue stuff with blurry thing on top though, certainly not exciting.

well yea, its a UI. the games are for the graphics. interfaces are there to be useful.

Its a UI so it should be ugly, not readable and doll? your Logic amazes me

UI is very important, remember all of Windows 8 critics is for its UI otherwise for running apps its faster than Windows 7 and has more features too. This UI doesn't make sense because on the screen this size Texts are not readable where almost more than 75% of screen on most screens are empty.

That its ugly is a matter of personal taste.
I like it, and where isn't it readable? I can read it just fine on the youtube video. and I have no issues reading it now on the PS3, the biggest difference is the menu is lower on the screen and it expands above it instead of below it.

I have PS3 and I am familiar with grid layout, but a)PS3 has lower resolution support so it blows the text little bit more and b) UI is dated, for the PS3 time (5 yrs ago) it was just fine but for now it looks dated.

Did you actually watch the video? I'd gladly take ads to avoid ever having to use such a horrible interface. It looks like the PSP interface circa 2005.

Forum link and you can see it there or jump into youtube.

To be honest, I'm not impressed with the UI. Its bland and doesn't show ease of use. I like the Xbox One's dashboard much better. Its easier to navigate and can do more.

I know it was, in stills. But you have to be pretty blind to not realize this leak happened because of the xbox live video that was released the other day.

and this has nothing to do with which console is best, they all do this. Today "leak" is PR speak for "video of unfinished stuff we still want to show off, but can't put an official PR stamp on".

This has Zero to do with any reality distortion fields(pretty sure Apple and Sony has that patented anyway) or what is the better this or that. it's just what they do today. It's been many years since leaks where truly "leaks", believing this is an accidental leak means you have to believe phones lost at a bar are actually lost at a bar and that someone really is selling London bridge.

Personally, I think MS, Sony and the rest should just stop doing "leaks" and just release the videos as themselves and tell people that this is prototype and non final stuff that likely will change.
