I used MegaUpload for people who made poor choices with where to host their files.

Aka, I use MediaFire. I recommend you do too. (or Dropbox, even better since it has direct downloads) I use those services even though I have a webserver because of the convenience of uploading/sharing, funny that.

I got a good bit of vmware linux virtual machine appliances (pre-made vmware vms where all I gotta do is download it and plug it into vmware)
from megaupload. a lot of people used it becuase of the awesome transfer speeds and the nice interface.

this is sad becuase a lot of those people that made those are gonna have to re-upload those to another site, meanwhile IT pros are gonna have a tough time. ;-(

Took me an extra hour to update my droid bionic to .901 because MU was down... But I voted I used it for piracy even tho I used it for both mainly because i occasionally downloaded tv shows and movies from it that weren't on netflix.

If you download a lot, it makes a big difference. Removing the wait times between downloads, the ability to max out your speed with a download manager, multiple downloads at once etc. I don't understand why people buy accounts for a whole bunch of services though, just stick to the ones your "sites" use.

Legitimate downloads, b***! &, frankly, I don't understand why the government would think I'd use it for anything else - & this comes from a guy who illegally downloads all the time! There's a reason that choice is as I type this winning the polls on this...

I really liked hosting files there, because the speed limits were very nice to the average free user and you don't need to pay unless you have more than 16k DSL.

Good job *******s. Now they can use this poll in court against them. Idiots.

And they'll find that - at this time - 48.7% of people had legitimate reasons for using the service. You don't think they would be naive enough to try saying that no piracy went on at all, do you?

If you think that they need this "Poll" for this, I guess you are the id*ot.

Used it for anything and everything I found there. Plain and simple.

I can't believe all the sites of this nature haven't been taken down a long time ago. Megaupload would've been one of the last one's I figured they'd hit though.

I rarely download copyrighted material but on the few occasions I did in the last few years, quite often I'd find all links headed right back to MegaUpload - say an album in a RAR file! Seemed to be a very common place for people to upload that sort of content IMHO.

mostly for megavideo watching but once i used it for uploading family pics from UK (thru logmein) and downloaded in sweden it was some 700 megs. I was pretty close on buying life time premium... hated that you've watched 72 minutes of video thingy.

I tried to use it but hated the "XX seconds to wait, Or upgrade to premium"

Damn, why didn't you say anything?
We would have helped you at with updating your old IE6 to a version that supports tabs... or whatever ancient browser you use!

I have no idea what you are saying.

He's saying that with modern browsers these days, you can switch to another tab while the timer counts down - problem sorted.

Exactly!
That's also why I favor a good old 90 sec timer over the 30 sec ones:
30 sec = too short to switch to another tab, too long to stay there and wait!

Nah, actually I know how to spend spare 30 secs.

I'm quite sure everything on YouTube is not copyrighted...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came… - Anyone?

Also, I still don't get why TPB is being blocked by "democratic" countries (like my poor own Belgium...) while they are just providing *links*. Shouldn't they block Google as well? Of course, TBP has a different target group (and therefore, different kind of links), but still.

Am I responsible because I tell someone they could score some drugs in Amsterdam?

Can't select multiple reasons, but Megavideo and legitimate uses where someone would ask me to download something to help them out, downloading mods (for games and applications), and so forth.

I never really considered using it for piracy to be honest. That's what I used RapidShare for, but that was ages ago, and mostly for porn.

"Pirated" Porn

Not necessarily, there was tons of free and legit home porn on there as well.

Megaupload might have been a source for illegal downloads, but that doesn't mean they weren't a good source for legit files either.

I weep over all those free and legit downloads that got hosted there.
I will get maaaaaany 404s in the coming months.

Glassed Silver:ios

Honestly i didnt use it much, but when i did it was for piracy. Anyway there are other sites..media fire etc.

I generally try to stay away from hosting sites. If I have to, I use either mediafire or dropbox for my file transfer needs. Torrents are the ideal piracy medium, not sketchy file sharing sites with rar files.

To be honest, I used to download "TV Shows" from it so I could use french subtitles.
I know it was probably illegal to do but personally, I don't see the difference between this and "skipping" commercial on my PVR.

I wish that cable companies provide both French and English subtitles where I live for TV Shows.

Anyway these days I mostly watch TV in English but some show such as Dr Who are still a real pain to understand for me

I also used it to store pictures that I shared with my family.

Multiple Choice anyone?

Unfortunately our front-page poll system doesn't have a multiple choice option, otherwise I would have selected it.

Offer combined options as single option each?

This will flaw the poll like hell...

Heck, you could even outsource the poll.

In the next update of Neowin we need m/c!
Pass it to the coders, please

thanks for the quick reply

Yeah it's unfortunate but I hope people will vote saying what the used the site for primarily. I'll pass it on to the coders and see if they will add it (probably won't for a while)

Append a link to a forum poll with m/c?

That'd be sweet...

Legitimate downloads, and that's it. This is going to hurt XDA mainly, as I get a lot of files from there...

Majority of XDA stuff, especially the roms, are usually considered piracy.

Considered piracy ?? Yeah by dumbasses

No, downloading most roms IS piracy, plain and simple. You can disagree with that all you want, but by the definition of law, it is piracy, and you are subject to punishment via the law.

Just like you may think "J-walking illegal? Pshhhh only dumbasses think that", but it's still illegal.

wow your so smart go tell this to samsung who gave /donated SGSII to cyanogenmode team so they can make the rom. apparently samsung in favor of illegal... right

1: android is open source
2: google releases sourcecodes for this reason
3: most companies are unlocking their boot loaders officially for same reason
4: most companies provide full RUU ROMs for specific regions or phones, if i get that RUU thats not illegal as company provided it, i purchaced the phone.
i share these roms or custom rom on file sharing thats not illegal.

5: i share copyrighted mp3 or movies thats illegal. period.
you dont understand this, you wont have brain to get this so ill just shut

You failed to read correctly. I specifically said "MOST", not all ROMS.

Of course Android is open source, but distributing the other software that comes with most ROM's (be it Samsung's TouchWiz, HTC's Sense, etc), isn't open source. That's the part that makes it illegal.

That's the way it works. Not all ROM sharing is illegal (as I said in my original post), but many are.

I had tmobile visual voicemail as an apk hosted with Filesonic for people who couldn't get it from market due to bug. It was removed for copyright violation in under 5 days.

You must be a iPhone/Apple user.

Yea because Samsung and HTC's ROM's aren't opensource right? Oh wait....

Stopped using it a few months back in favour of SkyDrive because I had a feeling something like this would happen. The chances of SkyDrive being "shut down" are close to 0, which is sad because it really isn't that different a service.

Used it for hosting files, but also downloading roms and such for my phone, much better avenues for piracy.

Once in a while piracy, but actually usually ROM related stuff and other legit things so I picked that. If I could check two I would def have checked piracy also though.

Ya know it's funny I made a poll like this in the forum and the thread was closed for being against Neowins rules. But apparently it's ok to post on the front page.

Little bit of consistency please.

That's unfortunate, but please speak to a Supervisor if you feel a forum decision is wrong.

It's nice that he is letting everything know here though... it's good to know what goes on with companies whose services we use
