I use WinRAR. Its "free" (no nag screen when you use the right click menu), open all the major formats I use, and like none of the other ones... it compresses RAR which I use over zip any day of the week.

No, not just for the beta. $19.95 gives you every version including all future releases. I bought it years ago and I can still use my key with the latest releases.

Yip. IZarc is free and covers all the formats.

7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CAB, CDI, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MDF, MBF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO.

I still use it, and since it fully supports 7zip there wouldn't be much point in switching the 7zip program (for me at least, because I've already bought Powerarchiver anyway). As for RAR, it's a proprietary format that has been surpassed by 7z and it can't die soon enough in my opinion.
