Prince takes on YouTube

He has spent his career challenging the establishment, even changing his name to try to get out of a recording contract. But Prince's latest argument has seen him take on a different entity altogether - the internet. The 49-year-old musician said yesterday he is considering legal action against a number of websites - including eBay and YouTube - which he says encourage piracy of his music and videos. He has asked for more than 2,000 illegally uploaded videos to be removed from YouTube, and is also considering action against eBay and Swedish piracy search engine The Pirate Bay.

"Very few artists have ever taken this kind of action over their rights,"
said a spokesman. "Yet Prince has shown time and time again he is ready to challenge the system in new ways to put artists and music first." The move is part of an anti-piracy campaign by Web Sheriff, which patrols the internet for breaches of copyright. The company says it hopes other major stars will join the movement. YouTube has said it will introduce "video fingerprinting" to try to cut down on the number of copyright-infringing films on its site.

He's suing eBay because there's plenty of bootlegged material of his being sold on the site all the time, and he hates bootlegs with a passion.

And as for Prince being a joke to any "real musician"? I suppose that's why he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And why musicians such as Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Maceo Parker, Miles Davis, and most recently Elton John have all either worked with him or had glowing things to say about his work.

ThaCrip - Everything you said in your post speaks to the type of individual you are. As far as YOU are concerned there is no justification for what artists are doing to protect their works.

But I wonder if by chance you were a multi millionaire rock star or actor or whatever and suddenly you feel the threat of sites like YouTube illegally making your works available to anyone that wants to see it. YouTube is getting revenue from the sheer number of eyeballs attracted to its site although the content many of those eyeballs are fixed to are the works of others.

If you truly wish the things you want to be free, you should be willing to work for free.

A pointless and irrelevant exercise, which Prince is famous for doing. Go on, pull the videos off youtube. That’s going to stop it dead, right?..
I wish Prince adopted his fans approach, they love his music and don't care if its on youtube, in fact im sure many enjoy watching it.

Hahahaha going after ThePirateBay. Can't wait to see that email posted. Awesome.

ebay? For what? I don't get it.

Why would you want your music videos pulled from youtube? You want LESS people to see your stuff? Oh ok that's a good idea. I guess that's why you have a purple banjo with a J hanging off the side of it.

Prince may have some fans, but I'm not one of them. I put him in the same category as Metallica... not nearly as good as they used to be, not getting the attention they want, so they start suing people. Yeah let's sue people. That gives me attention. In fact you don't even have to sue someone these days to get attention - you can just THINK about suing them.

Give me a break.

Prince's music is GREAT!....for scaring pigeons away from under bridges and buildings.

Farmers are thinking about marketing the 'Scarecrow Prince'..think he'll go after them too?....lol

Cut the bullcrap stupid-heinous-kiddos, even if you don't like Prince's music doesn't mean it can be pirated. I hardly see no one taking any legal measure when their rights and money is at stakes!

Pip'

"I hardly see no one taking any legal measure when their rights and money is at stakes!"

maybe because those artist that dont go after people aint greedy! ;)

cause the fact of the matter is artists are going to be living great lifestyles reguardless of piracy!

what an *******....prince, get more progressive....look at many artists who release their videos for others to download....dont show your half-<< racial epithet >> ways....

I went to see him in concert and despite the muppetry of the comment above, Prince is probably the last remaining TRUE musical artist in the pop sphere. He is simply incredible at almost everything that he does. Sing, Dance, Write songs, Play GUITAR! (Probably the best guitar player on earth right now). He's a hidden gem, and finally he's starting to get the recognition he deserves.

What a load of crap if I ever saw one. He's far from being even a GOOD guitar player, much less "best". Jesus christ.

alsheron I agree 100%. The man is a genius. Please, if you think Prince's fans care what YouTubers and Googlers think of him you are dead wrong.

The fact of the matter is putting the works of others on the net to view for free (when you don't have the rights to do so) is wrong. No different than selling drugs or being a mafia boss. Posting something to view for yourself is a different story entirely but fair rights laws end there.

Just because you do not see any harm in stealing a song or video does not make it ok. If that was the case artists would not make music, videos and films because they'd never profit from it.

People that harp about paying for something that they think should be free kill me because they remind me about the qusai environmentalist that would justify destroying some guys Hummer because they say its destructive to the environment; yet the same people ride alone in their hybrids to work, have homes larger then they need and probably don't think twice about throwing an old VCR, Television or PC into the the trash.

I've gone way off into anther topic so I'll just stop there. LOL

Personally I like what YouTube provides and I've watched a few free shows; I know its wrong and I belive YouTube should not allow those things to be posted.

Lay down the crack pipe, and get some help.

Prince is a guitar player.... end of story. Against the living (or recently passed) legends of guitar, the pop idiot couldn't hold a candle to any of them.

Prince videos on YouTube..... well prince my boy, if you should happen to read this...

BE THANKFUL ANYONE WAS WILLING TO PUT YOUR CRAP ON THE NET!!!!!

you sure about that stuff i highlighted in bold? ... cause thats a bad example if you ask me, cause drugs/mafia boss's kill people... this music stuff is just a loss of money at worst! ... BIG difference there.

the way i look at youtube is (strickly talking about music video's) it's pretty much advertisment for the artists... cause i dont see WHY people have a fit over seeing peoples music videos on youtube cause to me it aint any different than watching the videos on MTV/VH1 etc! ... plus it aint like most of the video's quality is all that great on youtube anyways... so if a person is serious about the quality of the videos, they will probably go out and buy it on dvd or something for the better quality.

i guess i can somewhat see his point... but if you ask me, he's just greedy or maybe he doing this for publicity to get more sales etc etc. ... plus, correct me if im wrong, but music/music video sales are mostly not even going to the artists anyways right?... so thats another reason to "not care" (if it hurts the artist a little or not... cause the way i understand it is most artists make there money touring etc and not from music sales etc)

p.s. why is he suing ebay?!? that dont make sence to me as it's a auction site. lol .... but good luck with piratebay. i dont think theres jack $hit he can do. lol
