Project Gotham Racing 5 could be 'next Xbox' launch game

While Microsoft has yet to confirm or deny anything surrounding the launch of an upcoming new Xbox game console, the general consensus is that the company will indeed release a "next Xbox" hardware product sometime before the end of 2013. But which games will be released alongside the new Xbox?

This week, rumors hit the Internet that one of the 'next Xbox' launch games will be Project Gotham Racing 5, a new entry in the Xbox exclusive arcade racing game series. The original Project Gotham Racing was a launch title for the first Xbox in 2001, and Project Gotham Racing 3 was an Xbox 360 launch title in 2005

All four previous PGR games were developed by UK-based Bizarre Creations; however, that team is no more as the developer was shut down by its owners at Activision in early 2011. That said, a team made up in part of ex-Bizarre Creations team members formed a new studio called Lucid Games soon afterward.

It is that team that is making Project Gotham Racing 5 for Microsoft, at least according to the claim by STFUandplay.com, via unnamed sources. The Lucid Games website seems to have posted a teaser of a upcoming racing game announcement in 2013 with the image above.

You know what, if you didn't mention PGR, I would of never remembered it in a million years.

Too arcadey for me, Forza all the way

Good to see the series come back, will make a good launch title for the Xbox Next. Going to be an exciting year, Xbox Next and PS4...can't wait to see what kind of games these new machines will bring us later this year!

This time lads can we have a track set in Liverpool please? Y'know, the place where you come from? After all, if it's good enough to film Fast and Furious 6 there it's good enough for PGR!

Loved Metropolis Street Racer series, kinda wish they'd go back to that name to be honest, but another PGR will be a definite purchase for me.

This is by lucid games, MS scapped bizzare creations (creators of MSR) so you can bet this will be absolutely nothing like it.

Did you even read the article, people from the team behind Bizarre Creations, founded Lucid Games after they were closed by Activision

Too many games to play I'll just rent it, ah crap, can't. I'll borrow a friends, ah crap, can't. I'll buy it used later, ah crap, can't.

I'll skip it, yep.

All of that is, again, based solely on rumor. Rumor that is VERY unlikely to be true...

And when it proves to be rumor, I'll stop rubbing in how disastrous it would be so that hopefully they get the point before it's too late.

We could just all stand quietly and say nothing, I choose not to.

It'd be fantastic if this is true. I'd love to see the continuing trend of a PGR game being a launch game for a console too. Anyone here remember the spiritual predecessor, Metropolis Street Racer?

I only played PGR 1 (original XBOX launch) and PGR 3 (first 360 launch), and I never liked either.
Can't really remember why seeing is that racing games are mainly what I'm into.

Project Gotham Racing was the first game for the first XBOX too wasn't it?
Hmmm, maybe it was just what came with mine when I bought it now that I think about it.
Might have been Oddworld. Too long ago to remember.
Haven't played any PGR games since that old one anyways.

It was Halo I believe. I remember hearing about the controversy of the Xbox' release in the Bungie Documentary

Or I could just say, Halo is the reason Xbox was hot in the first place. (Excuse my fanboyism right there.

Yeah it was Halo, and Oddworld at launch.
Don't know why I didn't think Halo was, lol.
Project Gotham Racing was in the first few out too.

A new Geometry Wars would be great too (or something similar from the same people, as I'm sure Activision owns that brand name).

Sidenote: Activision, release the f**king soundtrack to Geometry Wars 2.
