PS3 outsells 360 at launch period

Sony today announced that they have sold 1 million Playstation 3s in North America since the launch of the console six weeks ago.

That makes the Playstation 3 the fastest selling home console Sony has ever launched.

Microsoft sold 600,000 of their Xbox 360s from their November launch to the second week in January.

"SCEA went to great lengths to help meet demand for PS3, including airlifting systems into North America on a weekly basis to ensure a steady stream of units were available to consumers throughout the holiday season," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "The fact that we were able to reach the one-million mark faster than our top-selling platform, the PS2, further validates the strength of the PlayStation brand and our belief that consumers are ready to experience true high-definition gaming." ... "Reaching the one million mark for PS3 is the first of many major milestones for us as we head into a new year. Even more impressive, is that we were able to accomplish this feat while successfully managing two other gaming platforms--PS2 and PSP," said Tretton. "With three PlayStation platforms now available to gamers, 2007 will be about software and delivering innovative, new experiences and award-winning franchises to consumers, both through retail and through our online PLAYSTATION Network."

Because you can run Linux on the PS3 Sony have the holy grail on their hands, a complete home entertaiment system and home computer. If they follow it up with an iTunes-ish phone with built in 5 megapixel camera and decent sized screen and a foldaway keyboard... they pretty much own.

Oh, yeah, and I want a Wii to play games on.

How about Sony concentrating on getting games out first. Plus they need to fix that Playstation Network Store. It's horrid. Come on, where's download queing?

Games it' not a direct problem from Sony, but from the editors. Download queing is coming soon, on the march firmware.

Sony does have their own studios. Where's Getaway?

Too bad GoW2 is coming out for PS2 only. That would be a system-seller.

If they say that they've sold 1 million in North America, then that is a total lie. That would equate to just 50,000 sold in Japan, according to NexGen Wars. Oh well. Sony are lying about their sales, and the current standings are:

PlayStation 3: 1,050,117

Xbox 360: 9,705,615

Nintendo Wii: 3,591,186

I'm a Wii60 owner, I may be a Microsoft fanboy, but I have to say that by the end of 2007, you'll see the Wii at the top of the console sales. It's a very rare occasion that Nintendo wins a console war, so consider it a time for celebration.

shipped != sold. PS3s are already starting to show up on store shelves, so supply is beginning to match and exceed demand.

I'm still waiting for a goddamn wii. It's been nearly two months now and people are still waiting in lines to get one. Nintendo needs to get its act together and increase production.

This sounds like it should be a thread in the Sony Console forum, not a news item. Where's the Front Page News item on Wii sales? Or the over 10 Million 360s shipped article? Sounds like submitter just wants to make himself feel better.

I'm up for anything gamer news oriented. The front page gamers sections seems to get a new post once ever 2 or 3 days recently.

When it comes to launch sells no one has done as well as Nintendo w/ the Wii. I hope Nintendo turns out well this round, as they are the underdog here.

Anyway, by November this year I think we will know who is the winner in sells and if I were a betting man I would be putting it on Microsoft. As an American I'm going to Microsoft as well. Whats good for Microsoft is good for America. And Microsoft has actually made a very good product at a good price.

The biggest winner in all of this has to be IBM. I know they made the processor for the X360 and PS3, but didn't they also make the processor for the Wii? IBM doesn't want to waist their time with the crowded PC market. It looks like they are going to target specialty markets which is a smart move by them.

Sorry, but I do have a life outside of Neowin. And that life has been pretty much crap the past couple of months now. I post when I can now, certainly not the 30-50 stories a week I was doing up until November mind you.

it seems that Sony missed their goal of 2M consoles sold by the end of 2006... it also states that the Wii sold 600,000 in 8 days in the US and 372,000 in 2 days in Japan after launch, that's ~1M consoles in 8 days for the Wii with an estimate of 4M sales for the Wii by the end of 2006, that's nearly 4:1 over the PS3... also the Xbox 360 is estimated to sell 10M for the calendar year of 2006, let's see if the PS3 can sustain their average of 1M/month... i doubt it.

*edit from ^ article:

The company ended up selling 197,000 PS3s on launch day, less than half of the 400,000 it had initially forecast. The market research company NPD Group estimated that U.S. consumers bought 476,000 Wiis in the two weeks following its Nov. 19 launch......

Though updated figures were not available, a Nintendo spokeswoman said the company's earlier prediction to ship 4 million units by the end of the year was still on target.

Microsoft said Sunday it had sold 10.4 million Xbox 360s through the end of 2006.

Thats a lot of wiis!

well considering Sony has shipped 1M ps3's and that they are starting to be easier to find in stock and that Nintendo has shipped 4M wii's and that they are continually out of stock, i think it's clear who the real winner is.

who cares about launch period, thats affected by availability... what really matters is total sales over time

They forgot to mention that 90% of those sales occurred in Japan. Keep in mind that Sony has a strong following in Japan even though it's been pretty much a huge failure in the US. I figure that the exact opposite happened with the Xbox 360 with 90% of their sales occurring in the US.

The first line says 1 million sold in North America.

Is it just me or does that paragraph sound like their trying to cheer themselves up?

I guess congrats are in order anyway, but with the Xmas rush over and the high European prices it's all about keeping those kinds of sales figures up.
