PS3 Play TV gets price and date

Play TV, the PVR & digital tuner add-on for the PS3 has been given a release date and price. Play.com have it available for pre-order. They list a £99.99 price tag with a release date of 28th March 2008. Whilst this price is in no way official confirmation from Sony, it should be remembered that Play.com were the first retailer in the UK to list the 40GB PS3, and specify that it had no backwards compatibility. In other words, they have probably been given their product information directly from Sony.

Ouch £100... I already have a Tv tuner in my PC to record stuff with so I might pass....

Remember that even tho it says HD ready that actually means nothing in the UK. It may only work if ofcom decide to go to mpeg4 using the current DVB-T system but if they decide to go to DVB-T2 (likely as new standalone boxes will be needed for HD in the UK anyway so it makes sense to upgrade this at the same time) this is useless for HD.

But the most appealing thing (especially if you have the new 40Gig version) is the upscaling capability of the PS3, next best thing to HD I guess in the UK; then there's the neat cool silent running of the 40G PS3 and then of course it free's up a socket in your amp - chuck away the old tuner.

Digital broadcasts in the UK are current mpeg2 over DVB-T. They could switch to mpeg4 over DVB-T, everyone will need new set top boxes for them, so they will probably change over to DVB-T2 at the same time. They can't add DVB-2 support via firmware. They probably already have MP4 support as you say which is why they are marketing it as HD-Def Ready

£100 is a lot, however I can use my psp to set recordings, copy for later viewing and re-encoding to dvd via memory stick transfer. ps3's dtv scaler software is probably gonna be better than my tv's build in one.

I'd get a lot of use out of this.

thats not a bad price for a HD ready twin turner, i'd be very tempted but i'm not drawn to the ps3's games yet and dont have the money anyway.

ur gonna need more than 40gb with this though, so either upgrade the hdd or buy the higher model.

But thats all it is. A tuner. All it has to do is pass the signal to the PS3. Doesn't have to decode it or anything. That would all be done in the PS3's software
You can get proper twin tuner DVR's for under 100 quid (that have a bigger hard drive than the PS3 has unless you upgrade it)
