PSA: The Store Beta app doesn't work for some, here's how to fix it

Microsoft has recently released Windows 10 Technical Preview build 10041 to Insiders on the 'slow' ring, along with patches to make it as bug-free as possible at this point in development, and even ISO download links for those looking to do a clean install, or test Cortana outside the U.S.

As you may already know, in Windows 10 you have the old Store app (green tile) from Windows 8.1 and a beta version of the new one (grey tile) installed side-by-side. In build 9926 and 10041, the Store Beta app offers Insiders the ability to test the universal Office Preview apps, but for some people, it either refuses to open or offers error messages about not being able to update.

Here's how you fix it:

  1. Open the desktop Control Panel, and access the section called "Clock, Language and Region".
  2. Click on "Region", and you should get this window:

  3. In the "Format" tab, make sure you have it set as "English (United States)".
  4. In the "Administrative" tab, make sure you have "System Locale" set as "English (United States)".
  5. Reboot, then open the Store beta app again and it should proceed to update and work normally. This may take several minutes, so be patient.

If the above steps didn't work, you might need to repair the beta Store. For that, follow these steps:

  1. Search for "cmd" in the Start Menu, right click it, and run as administrator.

    1. In the command prompt, enter the following command (without quotes): "PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command "& {$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest}"

    2. Click Enter, let it run (should take a few seconds).
    3. Reboot, and now the Store Beta should work.
