Report: 150,000 UK Xbox One units sold; close to beating lifetime Wii U sales

Microsoft launched the Xbox One in the UK with a big event at London's Leicester Square Thursday night.

Microsoft launched the Xbox One on Friday and later that day stated their latest game console had already sold over 1 million units worldwide in its first 24 hours. While the company didn't offer a breakdown of how many Xbox One units were sold in each of its 13 launch markets, a new report claims that in the UK, 150,000 consoles were sold in the first 48 hours.

MCV reports that this weekend sales numbers are double the number of Xbox 360 units that were sold in the same time period for its launch in December 2005. Perhaps even more interesting is that the Xbox One launch numbers are close to beating the lifetime sales of Nintendo's Wii U console. which launched in the UK on November 30th, 2012. Assuming there are enough new Xbox One shipments to go around to retailers, the Xbox One will beat the lifetime Wii U sales number in the UK later this week.

Of course, there is another big console launch coming to the UK and the rest of Europe this Friday. Sony's PlayStation 4 could beat the Xbox One in launch sales in that part of the world. The PS4 has already sold over 1 million units just in the U.S. and Canada.

The Register is reporting the same figures but suggesting the PS3 sold 165k on launch. The question is "does it really matter" the answer is no. The XBone looks like a great console and for those that have it I hope they are enjoying it

I'm honestly more curious about the percentage of units sold vs units available to sell. I'd bet a pretty penny that for both the PS4 launch and the Xbox One launch, that percentage was pretty damn close to 100%

There wasn't as much of a shortage with the PS3 at UK launch (in March 207), as it launched a few months later than in the US (November 2006)

They are both pretty much sold out everywhere so yeah its pretty much 100%

I love Nintendo, but something is just wrong with their consoles anymore, they always want to be different just to be different... of course they were always kind of like that... N64 for example.. I think they need to just design one killer console that isn't a big gimmick that blows the specs for PS4 and XBO out of the water and be done with it

The problem is they market towards kids. Their latest commercial features children forming a game plan on how to convince their parents to buy them a Wii U. The fact about Nintendo now is that they have fallen out of touch with hardcore gamers and are marketing towards children. It's sad because they don't seem to realize that one console can both be for kids and adults.

at some point I used to think that they went the "different" way just so that people wouldn't be able to "emulate" consoles. seeing as how the nes, snes, gameboy, n64 were emulated to death and the gamecube to some extent, I thought their reasoning was more like: let's do something computers can't do (double screen + touchscreen, wiimote, etc).

Beating Wii U sales isn't that big of a challenge. They really goofed up buying into the "gaming will switch to phones and tablets rhetoric" and making that lame tablet the primary controller.

I have been impressed with my purchase and look forward to what will come in the future. I did snicker a bit when everyone gave me hell about saying Microsoft will have no problem selling 1 million on launch, and my posts were even deleted by mods, but lookie here.. its doing great and everyone should be happy because we have a healthy gaming industry. Game on.

they deleted your posts? lame. Well, they'll get over it. The XB1 is here to stay.

yeah, they got deleted, but i believe its because they were attacked by the vocal sony fans and they got steered off course pretty bad, no grudges.. just wish they (mods) would get mod warning vs deleted though. (or a courtesy "get back on track" message..)

Is he still at it? Sheesh...anyway I agree. I've been very impressed with it as well and managed to convince a few friends to get One as well.
