Rock Band Blitz announced by Harmonix

Harmonix is returning to its Rock Band music rhythm game franchise later this summer, but in a rather unique way. The developer announced its plans late last week to release Rock Band Blitz, a download-only game for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.

Rock Band Blitz basically takes the series' gameplay and simplifies it so that it doesn't need any of the company's special music controllers in order to play. A regular gamepad is all that is required to play the game, which will let players gain power ups and points while they try to match the music notes and the display on the screen. It will also have online leaderboards so you can compare your scores with your friends.

The game will come with over 20 music tracks, including songs from artists like Blink-182, Quiet Riot and Rick Springfield. Even better news is that the game is compatible with the over 3,500 songs that have been released for all the previous Rock Band games. In addition, the new Rock Band Blitz songs can be transferred over to Rock Band 3. Look for Rock Band Blitz to be rocking your console hard when it is released sometime this summer.
