Rumour: iPad 2 announcement on February 1

A rumour has been floating around the Internet about the possibility to the iPad 2 announcement in the coming weeks. The announcement could be on February 1 to introduce the all new tablet.

Kevin Rose, who is usually very accurate with these predictions and rumours, suggests that the iPad 2 announcement will introduce a higher dpi to the tablet, but not Retina display. Other features that have leaked and been rumoured tell us that the iPad 2 will have a front facing camera, higher rear facing camera, be slimmer and lightweight, improved battery life, 3-axis gyroscope, and a USB port. The iPad 2 will most definitely support FaceTime, so you'll be able to video chat to anyone with a Mac, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4 or an iPad 2.

Apple likes to keep to their announcement and release schedule with their iDevices, as we've seen the iPhone launch every June or July, the iPod touch every September and now we could see the new iPad coming in April, or even sooner.

Stay tuned for an press release announcement. Hopefully we'll see what the iPad 2 brings to the market and possibly an updated firmware with some new features.

I think the higher resolution display and usb are both pretty unlikely. USB...well, because it's Apple. If they haven't put USB or SD cards into the iPhone by now what has changed in the past 6 - 12 months to suddenly decide to put one in the iPad. With the current models SD adapter only being good for copying a few multimedia files to the device it seems a waste of time and space for it to be there. Thats unless people expect a radicle shift in iOS to go with it which I think is unlikely. The one advantage that Apple would probabaly back with USB may be support wired keyboards but I don't think thats enough alone to warrant the port.

As for the display. I can't see them really wanting to mess with the resolution too much. Unless they multiply it by some clean number they're going to cause issues for current iPad apps and developers alike. I think the long term goal here is retina display, and given they aren't going to come to the market with one this year (costs, availability and the internal hardware may struggle), I can see them just leaving the display alone for now.

I'm half inclined to think it will be an underwhelming release. Smaller form factor with an extended battery life, front and rear cameras plus facetime, GPS on all units (not just the 3G) and more RAM (maybe a slightly faster CPU). I'd say the rest will be software features and/or iTunes related services...this like a new notification system for iOS (that better competes with Androids) and services such as subscription based music services to pad out the announcement.

Given the hardware the competition has, I think they can remain very competitive without going overkill on the specs.

edit: I also think they'll add a 128gig model and the other ones will all drop slightly in price or one of the 16 or 32gig options will disappear.

Yep Im waiting for iPad2

For Android Honeycomb fans:
- Ugly & Inconsistent UI
- Oversized/Unnecessary elements (bottom & top)
- Complex home screen (for 90% of people)

Google needs better designers.

wow! I didn't know Apple was the only company to update its products.

It must suck for everyone else have tech thats never ever updated.

i think it's more about the ideology behind apple's targeted consumer updates. you don't see somebody who has the HP-DV3m go get the DV4m model just because it has a faster cpu, more ram or a "REVOLUTIONARY" "EXCITING" "CUTTING-EDGE" "MAGICAL" feature. I mean, let's admit it- (it's not a bad thing) but apple has a knack for marketing like that, and for appealing to their clients like that. (I'm guilty there- always chasing the latest & greatest.)

But then...it's a linear progression of models...it's like consoles -- there's only ever only 1 for the companies... I've owned generations of Game Boys...

...of course, the way Apple updates their products is just absurd.

What I want:

-Lighter.
-Longer battery life.
-Thinner.
-Bluetooth.
-Open ports.
-Usable as a USB drive.
-REALLY good cases.
-More connectivity ports.
-Less prone to finger prints.
-Front and back cameras.
-Less border space around the screen.
-And most important, make it more affordable.

-New OS. Something with a file structure.
-Handwriting recognition.
-FLASH!
-Maybe a desktop? I flippin HATE swimming in a sea of apps...

....

So, your wanting it lighter with more battery life? How do you think they could manage that? I didn't realize it didn't have bluetooth already... Never looked on mine.

You know what really ticks me off, though? Applications like QuickOffice can't access local storage very easily. I think it's complete bull**** that I have to go through iTunes to export something from my iPad. Same goes for the stupid Pages application.

That's why I'm purchasing the Motorola Xoom (Or whatever else is out...)

I will be able to use it like a real computer. I will be able to easily store stuff on it and just get it off. I will be able to customize it. I will be able to legitimately run things in the background. Android in this field (phones and tablets now) is my OS. Around 2.0, I wouldn't have said that.. But after Gingerbread and Honeycomb I'm proud to finally say that I think Android is an overall better platform. Sure, games aren't able to compete with iOS devices, but everything else is promising to be super smooth, user friendly, multi-functional, and reliable.

Awesome. Can't wait! Knowing Apple, they can only improve upon the first one. While other manufacturers are releasing devices to match the 1st iPad, Apple is already releasing the 2nd one.

Not really tho, the iPad 2's main new features are cameras and a USB port, features that are commonly found on other tablets.

I'm skeptical about the USB port

The iPad was behind the curve when it was released. It wasn't the first tablet - there were plenty before it, they just weren't as popular. There were tablets being made five years ago that had USB ports, cameras, replaceable batteries, upgradeable storage, etc.

Theres usually software enhancements when they release a new device. iOS 4.3 maybe?

etc etc etc etc .... but the software wasn't anywhere near as intuitive for the average user as the iPad OS is. And to an extent, no other tablet is.

We'll see what the one after honeycomb does.

All of those things below (minus maybe the USB ports and cameras) don't matter. It's how touch friendly the device is and nothing in the past 5 years competes with that.

Apple usually hold features back so that they can later claim that they are improving stuff.

"introduce the all new tablet"

It's not really all new tho is it? It's just a few minor hardware improvements to the original iPad.
