Rumour: OS X Lion nearing Golden Master stage

Apple is reportedly getting ready to issue developers with a near-complete version of Mac OS X 10.7 ''Lion'', less than three months out from the start of a tentative release window for the OS.

TechCrunch, without naming its source, reported today that Apple may soon deploy a first Golden Master build of Lion. Software labeled Golden Master is generally ready for release, though TechCrunch stressed that any release to developers would only be one of several Golden Master candidates, and not the version that will ship.

By comparison, OS X 10.5 ''Leopard'' hit the Golden Master stage in mid-October 2007, barely a fortnight ahead of an October 26 retail release. OS X 10.6 ''Snow Leopard''followed a nearly identical schedule, with a GM release to developers on August 12, 2009 ahead of an August 28 retail release.

Apple has not set a release date for Lion beyond a ''summer 2011'' window. TechCrunch and other tech blogs have speculated that the updated OS could be ready in time for Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, reportedly being held in early June.

In February, Apple released a developer preview of OS X Lion which while rough around the edges, gave the wider user community a first look at some of the features to be included in the OS. With Lion, Apple will aim to bring an iOS-like experience to the desktop, including expanded multi-touch support, home screens with app groups and full-screen apps.

Apple's Mac App Store will also be integrated into Lion and is widely expected to be used as a distribution method for the final release of the new OS.

No Thanks. I won't buy. I will wait until OS X Steve Jobs to reach Golden Master stage
Is there supposed to be a joke here? If there is, it's 404.

Considering how polished and stable Mac OS X Lion DP1 is for a first beta it wouldn't surprise me at all. I already said before in the Mac OS X Lion discussion thread that by the looks of it we could se an early release rather than later.

Meh, doubtful - I'd say it is a release candidate with all the focus on bug fixing rather than any new features. When they offered the developer preview from what I have heard it is feature complete and now it is in the final stretch where the main work has been done with only bug fixes being added. If you want to see the improvements being made to Safari 5.1 you can check out the trac.webkit.org/browser/tags where 534.x.x is the tagged branch on which Safari 5.1 is based

after all, this year WWDC is all over the new iPhone Again? nothing else to expect! Since Lion will release before WWDC...if it GM to be release in the coming weeks or month before June..than i can assure the wwdc will be about iOS ONLY!!!

At the end of the day Apple are a business and they'll go wherever the money is. Clearly iOS is the main money maker for them with iPad and iPhone so it's inevitable they'll focus on those.

I'm not saying it's right.. in fact it's a real shame. But I can understand why they do it. And I'd say it's inevitable that iOS type operating systems will be the future of the Mac.. it just makes so much sense. Helps eliminate the risk of damaging the OS by not knowing what you're doing, makes upgrading easier, etc etc...

Did anyone else look at that "Back to the Mac" picture and think "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe"? Is that an Apple image, and if so, is the parody intentional? Probably.

As crazy as that theory sounds, you might actually have a point. They describe the Mac as "magical" etc and going back would be like going back to Narnia, with Aslan being there etc. Interesting...

My point exactly! In my cheeky little mind I also took the parody one step further. Narnia, of course, as Aslan says himself, is somewhere that people only need to go until they grow up.

[Offended Apple fans please note the winkey there!]
