Samsung makes fun of iPhone 5 buyers in new TV ad

Samsung has already been attacking the iPhone 5 in the days leading up the launch of Apple's next iOS smartphone. This weekend, Samsung ran newspaper ads that tried to show how the iPhone 5 was inferior to Samsung's Galaxy S III, which launched in Europe in late May and in June in the US.

Today, Samsung kept up the marketing pressure with the launch of a new 90 second television commercial that pokes more than a little fun at the people in line waiting for the iPhone 5 to be released in January. We've already talked about how some of the people in line at the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in NYC are not really there to buy an iPhone 5.

The commercial points out the new connection dock on the iPhone 5 needs an adapter to connect to all those older iPhone devices. Samsung also shows off the NFC capabilities of the Galaxy S III to transfer files and photos just by touching two of those smartphones together. It even equates buying an iPhone 5 to something your mother and father would do instead of you. Ouch.

You can bet that this won't be the last slam that Samsung has planned against the iPhone 5 before Friday.

Is it really a good idea to mock the people you want to become your customers? They would be much wiser trying to parody Apple itself . . .

Do people not have a brain to work out what they want, rather than what everyone else wants. Is this planet really full of sheep which follow everyone else? This as shows that.

Apple should make a commercial showing someone using a Galaxy S3 making a NFC payment. Then have them go home and check their bank account only to realize all their money is gone because someone hacked the phone. Then show them opening bills for all the phone sex numbers the phone has been dialing due to the hack as well.

There's no doubt that Apple is the brand whose sales chart goes up by its only name. The name Apple is enough to describe about its product. But this time the fight among Apple & Samsung. But I got Samsung Galaxy S3 Comparison with other of Samsung Models & Nokia at http://howmobile.net/samsung/2...ung-i9300-galaxy-s-iii.html and http://howmobile.net/samsung/2...sung-galaxy-s-iii-i535.html. It was very floated in market & News also that the Galaxy S3 is the competing Model with iPhone also. I was finding the right place where I could make myself clear & doubtless about that for what should I go iPhone5 or Galaxy S3. After reading this blog I would like to go for Samsung Galaxy S3 as it has much more features than iPhone 5. Like Big screen, NFC, 2Gb RAM etc.

LOL.. these ads are so great because they show EXACTLY what most iPhone users are. Hopefully this ad raises awareness at how stupid you have to be to buy last generation technology in a phone and wait in line.

I'd say it's funny, it's original and it's gotta sting everyone who waits in line LOL.

wanna buy a $2,000 CPU or a $1,000 GFX card ?

I agree with you 100%

Last Fruit based product i bought was returned for poor compatibility
and a severe lack of features found on products at a fraction of the price.
(as partly pointed out in this commercial)

There is something really wrong with people when they will buy a product that is inferior simply because of a fruit logo lol
I bet a lot of these people are the kind of twats that post on message boards
every conceivable kind of question because they are too stupid or lazy to form their own opinion, do their own research. (or google an answer with less work than making threads)
..the perfect Apple customer lol

Lack of what features? Watching a video while sending an email? Because that ever happens. NFC? Oh god no, all those times I really want to high five another phone to share a playlist. Apple waited to put out LTE when they could maintain battery life. Yeah Samsung had it in the Skyrocket almost a year ago, but the battery was ****. (I know from owning it). Samsung gets these things early because they release a new (plastic) "the next big flagship" phone every 4 months. The iPhone comes out and does it late, but better. The build quality, materials used, screen, camera and App selection are all better than the S3, period. And apparently its faster on the Java tests by quite a margin.

I can hear it now though... "Just wait Apple fanboys, the S3 Super-eagle Rocket edition is coming in 3 months, and it has even better stuff! And 30% more plastic!"

I think there's something wrong when someone buys a plastic phone that gets upgraded every 4 months and then abandoned for support in less than a year. Want your phone OS update? Buy a new phone says Samsung... or wait 6 months for when your "updated" OS is about to be obsolete by another update you'll never get.

The Galaxy S2 was first released on February 15, 2011. The Galaxy S3 was first released May 29, 2012. Hardly 4 months apart. Those are (were in the case of the S2) Samsung's flagship smart phones.

You seem to have serious issues with 'plastic' as a material - even though that covers a HUGE range of different things. Plastic certainly has its uses, and you can get high-quality types.

One thing that bugged me. "I can watch a video while sending an email". Why. What use is that? If your creating an email your focus is going to be on what you're typing/reading anyway, seems useless to have a video playing in the foreground, rather than listening to it in the background.

So, on the iPhone, you can watch a video and do email at the same time? Really? Even in the background the video will play? You sure about that?

I know music can play in the background but, video? News to me...

Samsung should have made fun of Apple's Maps app with people unable to find their way to the Apple Store using their new crappy app.

not wider just a little bit taller, iPhone user can never have too many rows of icons!

When Its Nokia its trash talk and when it comes to samsung is funny and awesome. when they were making crappy phones, apple was making iphones, now thanks to android they have something to say.

NFC is going to be more important than the overwhelming majority of current smartphone owners realize. A few years from now, the concept of pulling out a credit or debit card to pay for something and signing your name on a slip of paper will elicit the same kind of reaction to the Duck Hunt video game in the movie "Back To The Future II" where the kid screams "You have to use your hands, that's like... a baby's toy!!!"

The fact that NFC is going to be important matters right now only for one reason: just as with every other technological innovation that Apple has NOT had anything to do with, when they eventually do support it, idiots and the typical consumer that buys Apple products will treat it like another "OMG, THIS IS SO COOL, APPLE HAS DONE IT YET AGAIN!!!" moment.

Apple, as usual, very late to the party but not enough people care.

BTW, this video is pretty funny as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFUz6vHEQCM

And just as relevant.

After trying the S3, all I can say is that it's physically too big for me. For me, I would go with the current HTC Incredible LTE/HTC Rezound for an Android phone, else the Lumia 820 in the WP8 realm. As I'm looking at picking up a phone at the end of the month ditch Big Blue I'll be looking at either an Incredible LTE or an iPhone 5 from my nearest regional carrier. Big Red & Blue can monopolize someone else.

I really like Apple's new connector. OK, so it doesn't connect to any of my equipment - but it can connect two different ways. So when I want to connect it to all the stuff it can't connect to I can do it either way. How cool is that?

It's funny that the second place dog in the fight always makes attack ads. Apple did it to Microsoft, and then they passed them in capital so they quit. Now Samsung is doing to Apple, who is WAAAY ahead of them, but will never catch them so all is in vain.

Atleast it keeps the "against/anti" crowd happy.

maybe an opportunity to point out some features they came up with before Apple ?
Considering they just got sued (which will keep the "for" crowd happy)

Pretty humorous ad actually. I showed it to a few friends who like Apple products, they laughed, they think it's funny how Apple Fanboys will wait in line forever for something that isn't even up-to-date with other phones.

Personally, the only thing Apple has been great at is Marketing and their Screens (Monitors and now the new Retina displays are gorgeous)... still not enough to make me buy some crApple product, but I respect that they are good at something.

Good job Sammy, keep up the hate towards 'em!

They're good at marketting due to being a marketting company. If they were a tech company we'd be seeing some innovation but the only time that's ever seen from Apple is when they release a new product line. Everything they have is looking a bit old these days.

Actual the screens were made by Samsung. Apple only did the marketing.

Apple has never made a display. They purchase them.

Every 2012 phone is coming out with a 'retina' (marketing term) or better display now. Those Nokia screens have been the best for a while now.

First advert I've laughed at in a while. Samsung are just trying to point out that they're not copying Apple. This may be more about raising awareness of that as a priority and attracting people away from Apple as a second agenda.

So based on your logic, if I point out a handful of features that are different, it is no longer copying? I am not understanding how you came to that conclusion since patent disputes are not usually over the entire product, just the parts that were copying. The parts that were not copied have nothing to do with it.

Yea but those were made by Apple so those are bad ads. This was from Samsung and can only be amazing. The two are in no way similar.

Hmm ... whose customers is Samsung trying to attract? Because insulting Apple's isn't a great way to endear yourself to them...

I actually think this will work, a lot of people that buy iPhones (not most, and I don't know numbers, just speaking from my own perceptions here) do so on a fashion whim, and making it seem silly (while at the same time there is genuine discontent about the lack of decent upgrade of the iPhone 5) may be a killer stab.

I say this as 2 people just today have asked me about the S3, all iPhone owners and all non techy - it is spreading.

Lol, what a fail in advertising. I can tell when an ad is overly done. The problem with Samsung is that they care too much about the specs than they do about the user experience. That's something that Apple has been doing for years.

It was more faced towards features. They mentioned the dock connector because many iPhone users bought products that use the old connecter and may have to throw away those nice stereos. :-(

Osiris said,

Absolutely!

iPhone has a massive market segment, and with most people NOT frequenting tech sites that adds up to a lot of users that are not being represented on here or other sites. Truth is, unless you have a geeky or techy attitude, your buying into the iExperience for either a perceived quality (they are good products, just saying that its always a matter of perception) or a peer pressure like fashion style reason (amongst others) - flimsy reasons with no backbone. Now the thing is, if you chose iPhone for a 'flimsy' reason this kind of advertising might make you think twice about an upgrade to iPhone 5.

I can see mainly apple fan boys not liking this ad, as it will feel insulting to them, but the majority of iPhone users wont feel insulted (I don't think).

I don't normally like ads like this, but this one seemed kind of funny to me.
That said, it didn't make me want to buy an S3, and I already didn't want to buy an iPhone.

The Hardware comes from Apple. The OS comes from Apple. Let's put 2 & 2 together, shall we... Apple can decide what they want to do with the hardware & software so that gives them more opportunity to do what they want to do. In the case with Android the software is developed by Google and shipped to various manufacturers who then tweak it to suite their needs but by the time they're finished tweaking it up it's not as great as it was anymore.

There is this thing called software. Maybe you heard of it? And the point of the commercial is to bash. Apple did that once and everyone here cried about it. Samsung does it, and its okay because Samsung runs Android and Android is the Muhammad of the technology world apparently... It is okay for Android to steal, lie, and cheat and do everything everyone else does, just don't you dare call Android out on it, because then its fans will murder you.

Speaks volumes if it's necessary to take "good natured" pot shots in your advertising.

I mean, that S3 commercial with two dudes filming the dog was okay enough.

Well Samsung is good at making great spec phones but what Apple does excel in is the User Experience. What I mean is they've been able to make a great mobile OS that's easy to use, secure, and has great integration with Macs & PC's thanks to iTunes. Another thing that's great is that for those who love to jailbreak their iDevices it's much easier than to root an Android. And since both the device and the OS is from Apple they can control it more, unlike many phones that have tweaked versions of Android.

I care about NFC. I'm upset that the iPhone 5 doesn't have it because it'll slow adoption of NFC.

tipical defense of a apple fanboy "Nobody cares are NFC right now"... oh let me guess you are going to break your contract next year so you can get NFC after everyone is already using it. IT IS BS.

Sorry but OSX is weird, the "task bar" is funky, is big and useless, Finder is a mess and some commands could be called by keyboard.. sheesh.
And about IOS, it is soo limited, it is more stable than Android but it is hard to move from Android to IOS without missing all the buttons, also it lacks of a proper multitasking. IOS is not simple, is dumb, even my old windows mobile 5 is way more powerful than IOS.

Well the Mac vs PC ads were based on non-existent PC issues or company issues with MS.
For example, the ad about how MS spends more on advertising than R&D. It's actually Apple that spends more on advertising than R&D (according to their financial statement).

Normally I would agree that Apple excel in user experience, but they just removed Google Maps and replaced it with an abomination that wants to send me ten miles to go shopping when there's a supermarket within five minutes walking distance.

It's also missing three large supermarkets in the city centre, and my local pub is apparently 200 metres from where it actually is. It has been there since long before I was born (I'm 24 years old).

Northern Ireland has a park called "Airfield Park" and Apple Maps actually label it as an airport, which will cause a lot of confusion for people.

In London, rail stations and tube stations use the same icon, so there's no way to differentiate them unless you know.

If Steve was here I'm sure he'd just say "You're mapping it wrong," but I for one hope to god they bring Google Maps back.

Your kind of argumentation is way more prominent than the iPhone fanbois...

Also, fanboys don't really care about Samsung if they are that hyped.
Those who are not hyped and have a set of their own two halves of brain won't give a damn about fans being bashed by a company.

right up to putting one up for sale on ebay close to $2000... X_X what a waste of money. um yeah I can get a kick butt tab with all the works for 1/2 that. Expensive tastes . Much akin to the Nike Pumps. $2 shoes for $130

Your kind of argumentation is way more prominent than the iPhone fanbois...

Your English is absolutely horrendous.

Off topic but what is it with the GS:Mac signature? Who puts a signature on every last comment or any for the matter? A bit obnoxious don't you think?

Please stop using your signature with every comment on Neowin. It's very annoying because you comment a lot too. Nobody does that. Pretty please!
