Samsung may use Ativ branding for Windows Phone 8 devices

Even though Samsung has a few issues going on in the courts, the company was able to make take significant market share in the Android community with its Galaxy branded devices. For Samsung, branding all of their Android products with the Galaxy moniker helped them to establish a sub-branding underneath the Android flag. Now it looks like Samsung will use the same strategy with Windows Phone (and other Windows products) but under the branding of Ativ.

The branding was first posted to Twitter but several other sources have also found the moniker including that Samsung has filed for a trademark on the name. Considering that the Galaxy S line has done exceptionally well for Samsung, it should come as no surprise that they will use the same strategy here.

Windows Phone 8 is right around the corner and with a Nokia/Microsoft announcement coming on September 5th, Windows Phone is about to be front and center for Microsoft. Seeing as that date is only a few days away, we should begin to hear a lot more about Windows Phone 8 over the coming days and will likely hear what each vendor has planned for the big launch that will come later this year.

If this is true they better do a good job of explaining the name otherwise it's not going to work as well. Galaxy works because it's a word people know, when you just make up words it makes it harder for you to market it, at least at the start.

How do you pronounce it?

Hard or soft "A" at the start?

Say "Active" without letting your tongue touch the top of your mouth or teeth..

The front of your tongue needs to touch to anunciate the T sound, but the back of the toungue shoudn't touch the roof to anunciate the 'ck' sound.

Omnia*

Yeah. It's like the first cool Windows Mobile phone they made. The Omnia brand even had some mild success.

1st search result on ativ is a software company. I foresee lawsuits following that name swiftly.

Don't worry, these tablets are running Windows so they'll be Bing powered.
Ativ software is 3rd in the results

All is safe with the world.

I know you're making a joke and all, but I just did a search on bing and Ativ software is the first link, so that doesn't work it seems.

heh.
If you bing search for "Ativ", like OP suggested, then the first listing (at least for me) is "Powerful electric bike conversion kits - 500W 36V NiMH". url: ativsolutions.com
Ativ software's site now seems to be at No.2 result for me, with wikipedia's Neve Ativ page dropping down to 3rd..

Of course, if you search for "Ativ software" (I know, my bad grammer) you'll get it as the first result.
However, it does show that not only are the search results affected by clinks (and maybe Ativ keywords being indexed on sites by bing), but maybe more importantly that Ativ IS something for samsung to worry about if they plan using the name as a software brand or hardware brand.

I just did a search for "Ativ" didn't get that bike conversion kit thing, guess it depends somehow.

They REALLLY need to stop using multiple fonts. Looks bloody awful.

I had to double check there.. I had initially ignored it completely thinking it was some captcha image.. lol. yeah maybe they need to make it look a bit better..

"Ativ" is a terrible name for a product line, although I'm not surprised - this is Samsung

Sounds like the marketing manager had a lisp and really wanted it called Active Tablet...

If it's just Ativ, then it is a definite improvement for them. I am guessing it will be something like Samsung Galaxy Ativ 4G LTE
