Schools and businesses buying up .xxx domain names

This week, you can go to a web site domain address service and purchase the rights to a URL with the .xxx name. The domain has obvious links to the adult entertainment industry. However, as the Associated Press reports, there are a lot of schools and businesses who are buying up the rights to those .xxx domains so that they can't be used for any porn sites.

An example of this preemptive move is the one taken by The University of Kansas. It has spent $3,000 purchasing the rights to domain names such as www.KUgirls.xxx and www.KUnurses.xxx. The university has no actual plans to use those URLs, it plans to just sit on them so they cannot be purchased by anyone who might use the addresses to create porn sites that might have some kind of link to the school.

The Target retail store chain has also admitted to a similar move to purchase the use of .xxx names that might be linked to the company. A spokesperson said, "Target has applied to block a number of the .xxx domains that correspond with our registered trademarks. We do not plan to use the domains."

The manager of the .xxx domain is ICM Registry. The company says that even if some businesses and schools don't purchase .xxx domain names that might be linked to those organizations, ICM will take steps to ensure that the trademarks of those groups are protected.

As usual, take a pretty good idea, over charge for it to create a guaranteed windfall. Is there a reason the price for .xxx is priced so high? Except for the reason that people will pay it?

They knew the adult industry right along with the non-adult related were going to jump all over this.

Oh, it's just gouging, no biggee.

It's a little funny and very much "roll eyes" worthy.

However, KUnurses.xxx wouldn't be my first choice for nurse porn.

On a related note, I found a porn DVD at the back my bosses drawer today. I feel bribery coming on

I used to work for Verisign. Companies do this with virtually every TLD/CCTLD. They defensively buy their name, so others don't use it to put up parody site or some other company uses it to link to their site. I'm not surprised that .xxx is going the same way.

Thanks to these gullible people and no laws against domain hoarding ICANN will be swimming in monies in no time. Non-profit organization my hairy lower back.

This has been going on for ages. Why is everyone having a hissy fit?

companies always buy up variations of their main domain name. I've seen relatively small companies (less than 500 employees) own around 8000+ domain names. It is done to protect the integrity of the company's image and its products/services.

None of the companies/schools are buying them with the intention of blocking porn. They're merely doing what they've always been doing with .biz., .org, etc. Now, there's just one more to cover.

They are buying the .xxx domains to profit.

Sex is natural, it is why we were originally created.

So why these morons need to buy .xxx domains is beyond me.

It is not going to stop pr0n hitting the net.

I don't watch pr0n myself, I prefer to participate.

However, these morons should go get laid.

this the stupidest thing ever!!! no p0rn or adult website is going to pay to be easily blocked by ISP's, schools, workplace etc... you have to admire the brilliant marketing behind it to make ordinary businesses and ppl cough up the cash to "protect" themselves... hehe and the irony is that their good name has a .xxx address... hilarious!

i dont think the average person cares about domain names in the xxx i mean, i'd find myself more interested in jkskso.xxx rather than bigtits.xxx

if schools are buying xxx domain names, that's a waste of taxpayer dollars... although i hear income tax never goes to the schools, just the pockets of the federal reserve folks.

LMAO what makes this schools think that they will be able to stop any porn domain with their school name? They can come up zillions of them, seriously the point of .xxx domain is to make sure it will be only adults visit to that site right? Whoever thought this will stop kids from entering adult sites does not know anything or I am just confused this whole .xxx domain thing. Look at those free porn sites what makes you think kids don't go there and how do you figure that when signing to such adult sites you can not lie about your age and get on it?

You seem to have missed the point. Entirely.

"Whoever thought this will stop kids from entering adult sites....<snip>"

This has nothing to do with stopping kids from entering adult sites. It has everything to do with protecting the image of these establishments. For example... I for one know that the company I work for, JCB, would not like it if a porn site sprung up called jcb.xxx

Understandable but there can be many domains like JCB.com, JCB.org, JCB.gov you know what I am saying? But people can not tell the difference from .xxx to .com,.net. or .org? This would have made sense if it was like back in the day when site like whitehouse.com but even than you know if you are looking for such sites as government you should type .gov right?

next in news, god bought *.xxx because he created everything and didnt want his image ruineds

If he existed

PennState just bought a ton of them, and the media tried to say only they are doing this and its due to the sex abuse scandle there right now.... just love how they claim stuff in the news that isn't true

And these businesses and schools are retarded. Having a .xxx domain will help them block this content. They must enjoy spending heaps on content filtering when this is clearly a better solution that allowing the porn industry to use the existing .com,.net,.etc

If all porn moves to xxx - it will be easy to censor porn on a national level.
This is censorship.
Besides everyone over puberty needs it.

How though? They are just buying their own domains so they won't get used. I'm not sure they'd like their name being used for a pornsite. Like I'm pretty sure apple bought out anything relating to iPhone.xxx and iPod.xxx.

why are they retarded? they don't want someone buying say Pitt.xxx and making a Univeristy of Pittsburgh Porn site they can't stop, this isn't about censorship, this is about protecting their image

Its about the ISP companies doing their damn jobs. You can't get a .com.au domain without having a registered business name that matches. They should be doing the same for .xxx and .com sites. The whole system is broken and having companies add complication to the already broken system just shows how broken it really is. These companies/schools are retarded, and apparently so is everyone else who makes the rules for these systems...

Does that clarify it?

Pretty sure the XXX tld is already requiring that registrants have a business in the adult entertainment industry to even have a functional domain. Everyone else can register a domain to prevent it being used, but they cannot use it themselves.

You're wrong. Anyone can make a porn parody just about anything. It's constitutionally protected.

And wait a sec...wasn't there a period before .xxx was generally available where you could pay a fixed fee to permanently stop anyone using a certain .xxx domain?

I'm not wrong, I am saying a univiersity doens't want someone buying their name and making one, they are trying to prevent that by buying the names up, how is something they are dong right now making me wrong?
