Slow News Sunday: Apple store employees check out Microsoft Store in NJ

Microsoft continues to open up new locations for its Microsoft retail stores. On Saturday, the company opened up its 18th and latest store in Freehold, New Jersey. This time, the opening had some rather interesting visitors; Apple Store team members.

A reader at WPCentral.com spotted and took a picture of at least three people wearing Apple Store shirts at the opening. While we assume it's OK for Apple Store employees to go into any store they want, we do have to wonder why they did so at this location while still wearing their work uniforms.

The new Microsoft Store was opened at the Freehold Raceway Mall and as usual, Microsoft gave the added incentive of a free concert for the first people who attended the store's opening; this time the performer was singer (and The Voice judge) Cee Lo Green.

Microsoft had said back in 2011, when it had just 10 stores opened, that it would launch as many as 75 new Microsoft Store locations in the next two to three years. So far, the pace of new store openings has not yet caught up with that proposed time table.

There is word that Microsoft will open up a new location by the end of the year outside of the continental US for the first time. The Seattle Times reports that Microsoft will launch a new Microsoft Store at the Plaza Las Americas shopping center in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Imagine if the situation were reversed the title would be along the lines of "Apple stores so great MS store employees can't help but visit".

Wonder if they went because Siri told them that the Lumia 900 is the best phone available?

Big whoop. I see Domino's pizza uniforms in Pizza Hut, McD's inside taco Bell.
Now, considering it was Apple...LOL, can you imagine the sh*t hitting the fan if
Jobs were alive and saw that?

When you talk to the Apple employees at the stores, most of them tell you that they have Windows PCs. So I'm not surprised.

Yeah I'm more surprised that someone's been around to talk to a significant number of employees at a significant number of Apple Stores about what type of PC they own.

Would you really want to own Mac hardware for Windows gaming? The GPU is almost always gimped for what you get for your money!

No I wouldn't buy Windows software for my Mac hardware or vice versa. (I prefer gaming on consoles anyway. )

No surprise really, if you work in a store you probably don't earn enough to buy Apple products.

Because nobody else could possibly print a white Apple logo on a blue t-shirt.

Because nobody but the biggest Apple fans would want to print a white Apple logo on a blue t-shirt.

If I wear a blue shirt with a white apple logo on it, does it mean I'm working in an apple store?

Saying that, they could be apple workers, and it's a slow news day.

Haha I thought this might have been at the local mall by me, Bridgewater Commons, as it also has an MS and Apple Store.

I had no clue a MS store was opening there, and my wife needed go to return something at the mall like 2 weeks ago first thing Sunday morning. Turns out we got there before the stores had opened but I saw a huge line of people, and they were all wearing NY Giants Football jerseys. Followed the line which led to the brand new MS store I had no clue was opening. Well they were having Giants quarterback Eli Manning doing a meet and greet. Seemed like an incredibly odd choice of people for a MS store launch, but they knew what they were doing I guess, as there were easily 200 people in line.

Odd, the 2 people I've known who work in Apple stores have always had to remove their Apple T-shirt the moment they leave the store, they aren't even allowed to travel to or from work wearing it, if they want to leave the store during breaks they aren't allowed to wear them. Probably to stop stories like this.

"Apple Store employees check out Burger King" etc.

And God forbid if they ever got caught competing in a Lumia 900 challenge or something wearing those t-shirts....that would be hilarious!!

Different store managers, different rules, maybe?

Or maybe this was work, i.e. spying on evil Microsoft. [/conspiracy]

I've seen Apple store employees walking around the mall here in those shirts. I'd guess that they only care about that rule if there is a Microsoft store nearby. We don't have a Microsoft store for 500+ miles.

I've seen Apple store employees waiting for the Metro before (I knew they worked there because i have been served by them), and they were wearing the blue t-shirts. I doubt Apple would tell them they cannot wear or show the t-shirt outside of work.
