Let's be honest here: SnagIt is much more powerful (the auto/smart-mode, basic photo-editor included with callouts, arrows support -> great for making tutorials) and customisable (hotkeys, include mouse curosor or not), even if it is not free. Maybe the price is a little high (50 euro/single user license), but the app is nice.

PicPick and Greenshot are two free alternatives about as good as Snag-It.

I didn't know about the two. Thank you, they are great. In fact, I even replaced SnagIt with Greenshot, I love it.

snipping tool works better imho.

snaggit has so many options not just snap an region and take screenshot. of course windows 8 bundled a video capture program which doesn't offer much as snaggit.
