Nullsoft has released silent version of Winamp (dubbed 2.80a), fixing a few small bugs.

Changes in Winamp 2.80a:
 • PPs output plugin fixes
 • winampa.exe fix

The grim outlook in the global space comes as a major shift is under way in Australia's domain industry, which will mean Melbourne IT will lose its position as the sole registrar of popular .com.au names, and RegistrarsAsia will instead become the central registry for all .au names.

Melbourne IT group manager Theo Hnarakis said his company would prosper because many of its wholesale and retail customers were focused on "real" businesses, instead of prospective registrations.

Adrian Kinderis, managing director of RegistrarsAsia, was also untroubled.

"The reductions will continue for a little while longer, but in two to three months you'll see it starting to expand," he said.

something tells me the use of a letter instead of av ersion number advance in this release means they're close to releasing winamp3 final and they wanna end production of winamp2 at a nice round number like 2.80.
#1.1 DJ^TuRKiYe on 01 May 2002 - 08:57
i think that they will wait untill V 2.99 and then release Winamp 3 gives em more time to fix/add stuff in V3 plus they always do silent releases.
#1.2 aco on 01 May 2002 - 12:30
Very true, they have been doing a few silent releases lately - who know's when they'll stop with Winamp 2.

Or the fact that 2.80 actually created some new bugs.
#1.4 zionath on 01 May 2002 - 19:37
new bugs ay? heh won't bother wid it then
#1.5 nant on 01 May 2002 - 19:49
Then with that attitude don't bother using any programs because *all* programs have bugs. Sheesh.
#1.6 wog boy on 01 May 2002 - 21:08
i think you find they will support winamp 2 even after winamp3 is released for the simple fact it runs on older computers while winamp3 doesn't
#1.7 zivan56 on 02 May 2002 - 00:26
I have Winamp3 running on an old AMD 486DX100 with Windows 95 and no problems so far, except the thinger scrolling thing.
#1.8 nemo on 02 May 2002 - 01:12
no the letters isn't anything new. i think they went up to b with 2.78. i'm not exactly sure tho. but i know they did lettering on an earlier release

yea a handful of the neowin users seem to be ever so lame. either the news is: A) old (people complain if they downloaded the file 3 hours before the news post... big whoop losers) B) not exclusive/originally posted on neowin (well sorry if I dont wanna read every last web page to get some news) C) the software listed isnt worth posting as "xxxx" is 5x better D) if it wasnt neowin's fault, by all means its has to be the programmers fault for either not updating it enough or updating it to much.. ("winrar beta 7, who many beta's do they want?!" let me tell you boy, they'll make 50 beta's if thats how many releases it takes to get it to the stage they want before saying its final.) thats my rant anyways

I prefer Windows Media Player for the SRS (O) thing there (http://www.srslabs.com/). It provides better sounds and better Bass + WOW Effect. Those are the things that Winamp does not have and thats why I stick with Windows Media Player but I still download Winamp bcoz you never know...

Try DFX for Winamp. I'm pretty positive it's better than SRS ever will be. I don't use it though, I perfer to have my sound unmodified and unequalizied.. Good speakers make up for it.
#16 Kaneda on 02 May 2002 - 01:07
you can get an srs wow! plugin for winamp. but i think it sucks so i don't use it personally

#21 AGW83 on 02 May 2002 - 19:13
What happened to version 3? Did it get axed? BTW I am sick of all these software companys putting out so many betas. For example, I think WinRAR 3 is on beta 7! How many betas does it take?! At least ZA Pro 3 went through only one or two betas . . .
(2 replies) #22 nant on 02 May 2002 - 20:11
Winamp 3 did not get "axed". There will be Winamp 2.x for those who want a simple music player and Winamp 3.0 for those who want more than just a music player. Betas are the decision of the developers. Stop criticizing(sp?). Can you do better?

Please apologize . . . your comment is completely off-base. I have every right to criticize them as you have every right to criticize me. Fact is I have been personally attacked for no reason.
#22.2 nant on 02 May 2002 - 21:10
I will not apologize as there's nothing to apologize for. You can ignore the "Stop criticizing. Can you do better?" part if you wish to.
