Thanks Byte for the heads up on this release. PowerArchiver features full built-in support for creating and adding files to ZIP (+JavaARhiver, +Quake's III PK3), CAB, LHA (LZH), BH (BlakHole), TAR and TAR.GZ archives, plus built-in support for reading and extracting many other formats: RAR, ARJ, ARC, ACE, ZOO, GZip, as well as XXE and UUE Internet encoded files.

This program is equipped with a tool for converting between file formats (for example ZIP
archive to CAB archive, CAB archive to LHA archive), a tool for writing and reading ZIP spanned archives, and a tool for detecting archive format. You can also print a file list to a printer, or export a file list to HTML and TXT files.

PowerArchiver features two modes of viewing archive: Classic style - all files in the same listing; or Explorer style - browsing through archive like through folders in Windows Explorer. It offers a great user interface with new Windows 2000 style toolbars, forms, buttons; and it gives you the choice of a double-click or a single-click interface. You can also have "Favorite Folders" for faster finding of your archives, selecting files in an archive by date, size, name, etc

Changes in Current Version:
 • Note: Uninstall previous versions and reboot before installing this latest release
 • Added unlimited ZIP size support and Deflate64 support (PkZip 4.5)
 • FTP support: create and upload files using one operation
 • PowerArchiver Password Manager (PPM) saves your archive passwords
 • XP support, including XP theme support
 • Added CAB SFX support
 • Support for reading/extracting new RAR v3 archives
 • New wizard-like interface for creating powerful SFX archives
 • Improved Chinese and Japanese (DBCS encoded) names processing in archives
 • Edit and update files from directly within an archive

"Litigation is never our preferred course" said Edward P. Murphy, NMPA's CEO. "But when a company repeatedly demonstrates its intent, despite repeated warnings, to continue to engage in and facilitate activities it knows are causing grave harm to creators and copyright owners, there is little choice but to defend our rights through the legal system. To do otherwise would be to abandon America¡¦s music community to the pirates"
Among the numerous recording artists and songwriters whose works are being unlawfully distributed include: Brandy, Boys II Men, Dave Mathews Band, Celine Dion, Shakira, Enya, the Beatles, Shakira, Billy Joel, Destiny's Child, Alicia Keyes, James Brown, Linkin Park, Madonna, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Paula Cole, Lalo Schifrin, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer, and countless others.

Matt Oppenheim, Senior Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs of the RIAA, said that the litigation was a last resort after numerous out-of-court warnings to Audiogalaxy were ignored or resulted in half-hearted attempts to fix the problem.

"Audiogalaxy and Napster are cut from the same cloth," said Oppenheim. "Audiogalaxy is profiting by providing its users a library of pirated music, including today's most popular hits. Though claiming fealty to copyrights, Audiogalaxy continues to offer up virtually all of the music we told them should be excluded. The firm's sieve-like filter has been totally ineffective."

Specifically, the suit, which also names Michael Merhej, head of Audiogalaxy as a defendant, charges that:

* Audiogalaxy had ample knowledge of the massive infringements occurring daily on its system, and in fact marketed itself as the next Napster.

* Audiogalaxy clearly had the ability to control the works available on its system and acknowledged the ability to remove users, or alternatively, to exclude certain content.

* Audiogalaxy provided users with a fully integrated, centralized structure and facility, including a hub of central computers to which users connected; a continuously updated database and index of infringing sound recordings; information about file size, popularity and download speed of files; and proprietary software to facilitate efficient identification, copying and distribution of recordings.

* Like Napster, Audiogalaxy seeks to profit from its pirate system by building an extensive user base to attract advertisers and investment dollars.

Looks good, but I'll stick with the powerful and FREE FilZip (http://www.filzip.com).

Filzip look s good. It's good to see there's still good freeware out there. Too bad Powerarchiver is no longer one of them (although $19.95 isn't much) I'll stick with picozip though (www.picozip.com)

Are there any freeware applications out there that are able to create RAR/ACE files? Or are those limited to Winrar and Winace respectively?
who cares?
Well, the fact that I asked would imply that I care. Let me repeat my question again, so those who are bit slow can get another chance to read the question: Are there any freeware applications out there that are able to create RAR and ACE files? Or are those limited to Winrar and Winace respectively?

dkg_ctc: The answer to your question is no, there are no other programs that can create ace/rar files. These compression formats are patented by their respective authors. If you are like most and deal mainly with zip files, try the free UltimateZip. Filzip is good too. Both decompress rar/ace files. WinRAR and WinACE are extremely slow compared to UltimateZip. Compare for yourself.

You're right, RAR/ACE do tend to be slower. However, RAR and ACE formats also provide much, much better compression than ZIP, and would gladly pay for WinRAR if it is the only app which creates RAR archives.

WinRAR is the only app that you can create rar archives. It is a nice program, pretty small and if you are mainly archiving files for personal use only, WinRAR is not a bad way to go. But ace and rar files are not too common and many people would be puzzled what to do with them. WinRAR and WinZip are slower decompressing zip files than UltimateZip. I tested each one with a number of zip files that were filled with hundreds of icons. UZ decompressed the icons in individual folders almost twice as fast as WZ or WR.

This "PowerArchiver 2002 8.0 Release Candidate 1" looks a lot like WinZIP to me... They trying to change their names or something? Some third party bought them?

#8 yeah it does look like Winzip --- I use CAB format. Too bad PowerArchiver can't make readable CAB files to XP

May look like Winzip but point is that Winzip sucks. It used to be good but they halted the addition of new features (and new versions it seems).
