Thanks Jason for the heads up in BPN

Two days ago the demo time frame of Nero 5.5.10.15a expired. Ahead Software, the company behind the most famous CD/DVD burning application Nero Burning Rom released the latest update. As it has often been the case a current changelog is not yet available.

This file can be used as a free Nero demo version, if you didn't have Nero installed previously, or as an update from an older version of Nero. In case of an update the software will detect whether you are entitled to a free update or not.

The group of products formerly known as ".Net Enterprise Servers," under the domain of Senior VP Paul Flessner, are now known as "Microsoft Windows Server System products," according to the revamped Microsoft corporate Web site. SQL Server, Exchange and BizTalk Server are all part of the Windows Server System family.

Microsoft is not abandoning completely the .Net moniker. It continues to use ".Net Framework" to describe the set of classes and libraries for developing and deploying Web services and "smart client" applications. And .Net continues to be a key piece of the name of the Visual Studio .Net development-tool suite.

The company also continues to market two .Net services under the .Net name: its .Net Passport authentication service, and its .Net Alerts.

And Windows Server Gets a New Name

When Microsoft announced in January that it was dropping the .Net from the Windows Server name, some wondered about its motives. Some of its competitors attempted to portray the change as Microsoft's backing away from .Net.

Microsoft released Windows Server 2003 to manufacturing on Friday. The Microsoft .Net Framework is built into all of the different Windows Server 2003 versions.

In recent months, Microsoft has started pushing ".Net Connected" as its preferred .Net branding concept.

In January, Microsoft told its reseller partners that it was "moving toward a branding approach where '.NET Connected' is the way we communicate our products (and our partners' products) that enable customers to easily and consistently connect disparate information, systems and devices to meet their people and business needs, regardless of underlying platform or programming languages."

Oh come on, how many updates does 5.5 need? I stopped updating a while back, this is starting to get ridiculous (spelling?)..
#7.1 rob.derosa on 01 Apr 2003 - 18:25
It extends support of the software to other, newer CD Writers that were not supported before.

[neoquote=#7.0 by N_B]Oh come on, how many updates does 5.5 need? it's rediculous
#8 Mav Phoenix on 01 Apr 2003 - 19:15
I wonder if there will be an a or b release now to make the version string even longer...
#9 King Mustard on 01 Apr 2003 - 19:43
It's over 1 Mb smaller than 5.5.10.15a
#10 nFHQ|MaTrIx on 01 Apr 2003 - 19:49
it just seems like pointless upgrades, why dont they just hold out until they get a proper new version just as bad as the winamp 2.x updates
#11 netizen on 01 Apr 2003 - 20:02
Wouldn't you rather have your current program updated for free? If they went quiet for 6 months and then came out with V6.0, you'd have to pay for a new licence (theoretically! )

Ok #7.2, Nero is a small cd burning application, not an operating system. Do you really think that Microsoft sits around on Windows, they have someone doing something 24/7. There's just has to go through more rigorous testing, to avoid stupid critscim like yours. As with every Microsoft argument, if you don't like it, get a Mac or use Linux. The only reason those aren't flawed is because no one cares to try and exploit them, jesus.

I also want to know what the changes are... Ahed never seems to bo bothered to update the changelog when releasing new builds... :disappoin

Stop complaining! If you don't want to download it don't wait for v6. Complaining does nothing.
#15 bits on 01 Apr 2003 - 22:08
cause the changes are minor... maybe a new drive or two supported... Someone prolly emailed them and asked for the support hence the new releases (gotta remember most companies want to bundle nero with their burner, so many would require a version that supports their newest drives, putting it only on a cd for them is rather silly so the update is put on the web aswell..) If you dont have a problem with the current nero version, then maybe you dont need to update? Chances are it offers nothing new to you unless otherwise indicated.

I wonder if they're ever gonna fix the way Nero locks up for hours on end if I try to burn more than my CD writer can handle (I had one of those acursed HP 8100i ones, meh). Any other burn proggie will realize nothing's happening and call it quits. ;P
#17.1 pctuk on 02 Apr 2003 - 05:25
The interface is ugly too - why is it that buttons in the wizard aren't skinned :/
#18 eseijas on 02 Apr 2003 - 01:00
I want to upgrade from v5.5.9.9 to this one. But what about bugs? This fear is new to Nero but it exists. Does anybody know anything about this version? Have a nice day you all

When will Ahead Software realize that they need to get cracking with a version 6?
#19.1 mcguirexn on 02 Apr 2003 - 04:03
shhhh
#19.2 Chick on 02 Apr 2003 - 04:32
And just what kind of Magic Tricks do you think that 6.0 will preform besides making your money for the upgrade disappear? Ahead keeps giving you improved software for free and people think that is wrong!
#20 Sonnyr on 02 Apr 2003 - 02:31
The download is also the demo version and the date has expired hence new version number.
#21 Munki on 03 Apr 2003 - 01:43

SUPERAntiSpyware is a great product, all the industry experts agree. I thought you all might like to know you can get 20% off the PRO version - SUPERAntiSpyware. Not seen this offer anywhere else. Dave.
