Mozillazine (http://www.mozillazine.org) posted this news a little while ago.

Minotaur (http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/minotaur/m...ur-roadmap.html), the Mail/News client branched from Mozilla, has builds released for Win32, MacOSX, and Linux platforms. The Win32 build was just recently updated using trunk code from current Mozilla builds, and the other platforms have a client using 1.3a Mozilla Mail/News code.

The goal of Minotaur is to break off completely and form a stand-along Mail/News client based off Gecko and utilizing the Mozilla GRE. More information can be found at the above links. Download link provided below.

As new as it is, is it even worth using for your average Joe yet or is it primarily for developers and alpha junkies?

[neoquote=#1.0 by WishX]As new as it is, is it even worth using for your average Joe yet or is it primarily for developers and alpha junkies?[/neoquote] It's actually basically the Mail component from Mozilla 1.3 in a standalone package so it's actually pretty stable right now.

This'll become part of the Mozilla suite eventually, as evidenced by the roadmap. Speaking of the roadmap, did anyone notice the reference to a "Thunderbird" on there. Maybe Thunderbird is Phoenix's new name.

[/neoquote] It was my understanding that thunderbird was what minotaur was going to be called, so I'd gather that minotaur=thunderbird just not on the Phoenix toolset. But I could be wrong, I'm totally lost on thier naming right now lol.

Actually, I believe you are partially correct. The plan was for Mozilla to break up into standalone parts, Thunderbird being the browser, and Minotaur being the Mail/News client. However, with the relanding of phoenix into the trunk (soon to come), I think that Thunderbird will basically be Phoenix with some Moz handling. Not sure about that though, but that is my understanding.

From http://www.mozilla.org/roadmap.html "Develop further the standalone mail companion application to Phoenix already begun as Minotaur, but based on the new XUL toolkit used by Phoenix (this variant has been codenamed Thunderbird). Note: the Phoenix toolkit is a compatible reimplementation of the XPFE toolkit, with added features such as customizable toolbars. We are not starting a new C++ GUI toolkit, we are simply moving to the next generation XUL toolkit." So it'd seem that minotaur is thunderbird without the Phoenix toolkit.
