Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM (Oscar and TOC protocols), ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks.

Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time.

Gaim supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer (coming soon), away messages, typing notification, and MSN window closing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, and more.

version 0.61 (04/07/2003):

 • Split the buddy pounce core and UI, and rewrote the UI for it.
 • Removed folder icons and excess space from the buddy list (Thanks Dave Camp)
 • Fixed a bug involving dragging buddies and groups
 • Re-implemented the logout icons.
 • New icons for "away" and "aol" (Thanks, Moses Lei)

The BPI's executive chairman Peter Jamieson said: "EasyInternet Café is liable for a clear and profound breach of copyright and I am glad that Stelios has seen sense and agreed to settle this case."

Stelios Haji-Loannou said: "The BPI originally asked for a million pounds' damages so at least they've settled for a 92 per cent. What is interesting is that they preferred to settle rather than to test whether they can continue to enforce the prohibition of music downloads."

"I think this is the warm up lap since I suspect I will be back in court with the same people, the media giants, when easyCinema has to sue the film distributors for basically the same thing, restrictive practices at the expense of the consumer."

Don't forget to install the GTK+ runtime if you'll use it with windows. You can download the runtime at www.gtk.org

And what's that, a 20 mb java-like runtime that's slow as s*** for ports from other platforms?

It's a nice prog, but in Linux I use Gabber. http://gabber.sf.net For my IM needs in Windows I use Exodus http://exodus.jabberstudio.org or sometimes myJabber http://www.myjabber.net Just thought I'd share it with you.

As long as we're sharing, I'd like to post a link to another Multi-protocol IM program for Windows: Miranda http://miranda-icq.sourceforge.net/ It's got a plugin architecture so that people can add whatever features they want.

#6.1 mimeryme on 14 Apr 2003 - 18:49
Sure it's old, but for the person that hasn't seen this news before, it should be new.

Gaim still lack in some features when you comparess it to trillian like shell extention, better file transfer and some other features. I'm having some problems with the msn account over gaim but I still using it as it's fast and consumes less memory than trillian. IMO you must download, install and try it so you can have one idea. Peace

#10 monofonik on 15 Apr 2003 - 02:30
has anyone had any luck recieving files with gaim?
#11 bangbang023 on 15 Apr 2003 - 05:52
supports buddies font and html profiles natively (unlike trillian) and has tabs unlike trillian and supports the user is typing in aim without having to direct connect like trillian. awesome client. I'll use it every now and then but I am still stiuck on aim with deadaim. but gaim is definitely better than trillian in my eyes.

Ooooooo nice new release, Trillian can stay uninstalled :-)
