Well, its been a while since Mozilla Firebird 0.6 has been released, and damn is it good. With a plethora of extra functionality, it is my browser of choice :) If you haven't downloaded it yet, then why not! You fool! Try it out now!

So whats this mindless plug all about? Well, I thought I'd compile you guys a list of the neat plugins that there are, which extend the browser's features a long way. There are many, and so i've picked a selection of ones that i use regularly. The central hub for plugins, themes, and problems is Texturizer.net, and thats where much of this has come from.

AdBlock
"AdBlock allows the user to specify a number of filters, which removes unwanted images based on their address. Filters are specified using the wildcard character (*) or regular expressions. Thus, it's possible to control in some detail what is displayed. Upon loading a page, AdBlock will scan through it and remove or hide the elements that matches the filters entered by the user. It doesn't prevent content from being downloaded, merely from being displayed. It's capable of removing both images and Flash animations."

The fact that it still downloads them makes ya feel a little less guilty :)

Autoscroll

"AutoScroll is an addon for Firebird that emulates the autoscrolling functionality of Internet Explorer. For those unfamiliar with this, when you middle click on a page (typically by clicking a mouse wheel button) you can then move the mouse up and down to have the page scroll by you without further mouse movements."

An invaluable feature.

LiveHTTPHeaders

"This developer oriented extension is to add information about the HTTP headers. More information on the project homepage."

Not invaluable, but a cool and useful tool for web gurus.

Popup ALT Attribute

"This extension displays the alt property of images as a tooltip, like Internet Explorer and Netscape 4.x does. "

Mycroft

"This is a very powerful collection of extensions that allow you to add search engines to the Search bar in Firebird. To install a new search engine, go to the Download page and enter the Site Name (e.g. altavista, dictionary, etc.) and press Search. A list of matches should appear. Click on the one you want and that search engine should now be added to the list of available search engines in the Firebird Search bar!"

This is just super- a collection of adins that add extra search options to the search box in the top right.

User Agent Switcher

"This extension adds a menu to switch the user agent of the browser. It is designed to provide functionality similar to the "Browser Identification" feature of Opera."

Very very useful, allowing you to view sites deemed good enough only for IE :D.

Web Developer

"The Web Developer extension for Mozilla Firebird adds a menu and a toolbar to the browser with various web developer tools." (ed - view his site for the full list- there are loads of things.)

One of my favorite tools, enabling a plethora of extra Web Developer functions.

Well - thats my favorite few. Hope you get as much fun out of them as i have!

Other amazing plug-ins to use with this already astounding browser that I love :
Image Nuker
Mouse Gestures(Kicks OPERA's GESTURES @$$!!!!111 this on is uber customizable)
Flash Click to view(GREAT stops those annoying flash adds from auto play)
Tab Scroller(right click and then when you scroll with your mouse it'll bring up the lil menu just like in Opera only it's better cuz it's 100% FREE)

Gotta love Firebird

I'm trying to get my Linux buds to run it, but they won't poor schmucks. As for my Apple friends they like IE (more than Safari)?

I see no mention of the awesome tabbed browsing
#3.1 scarbittenross on 15 Jun 2003 - 00:02
Not really a 'plugin' seeing as it really is a feature of the Firebird browser anyway. Although i also use the plugin and find it excellent an excellent adaption.

Maybe he means tabbrowser extensions?? Also this article should be called "Mozilla Firebird Extension Review".

This Post in the phoenix forum shows how to use a css adblocker. in this case all ads are still downloaded, just the pages are reformatted to remove the ads. You have to add an assload of cut&paste into your userContent.css file, but it works very well.
#4.1 vetMr magoo on 15 Jun 2003 - 06:52
the adblock is just a better way of doing that...

Never use the word 'plethora' more than once per article. It's just one of those things.

How could you *not* mentiong Tabbrowser Extensions? It's only the most recommended extension to all the newbies asking how to get new windows to open in tabs.

I've found that the autoscroll that's part of All-in-One Gestures is more developed than the regular Autoscroll, and it also includes mouse gestures for those who want them. (I turn them off)
#9.1 vetMr magoo on 15 Jun 2003 - 09:13
Well, i was really trying to look at plugins - although tabed browsing is probably the coolest thing for me over IE, it is a feature; and "recommended extension to all the newbies asking how to get new windows to open in tabs" - right click open link in new tab???
#9.2 scarbittenross on 15 Jun 2003 - 11:31
Na, i think he means 'clicking on a link in a webpage or on an email' opens link in new window, instead of just using your open window.
#9.3 beeboo on 15 Jun 2003 - 18:19
No, he's referring to Tabbrowser Extensions
#9.4 hoodedone on 15 Jun 2003 - 22:37
I was referring to users asking how to get all "new windows" to open in tabs within the current window by default, instead of opening up another window on the Windows taskbar. MozillaZine forums usually gets at least one person asking how to do this every few days, and every time they are directed to TBE.

I'm missing TBE (Tabbrowser Extensions) also. This, Alternate Stylesheets and Autohide Toolbox (True Fullscreen) are always the first I get after installing a nightly.

Good to see some Firebird love around

I'd like to know how to achieve *true* fullscreen in *X* (Linu when all the trics/extensions mentioned seem really coded for windows... Is ther anybody here doing just this ?

That would make my day. Small things...
