Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF) is a software agent that builds a barrier between your personal computer and the Internet. KPF is designed to protect your PC against attacks from both the Internet, and other computers in the local network.

KPF controls all data flow in both directions – from the Internet to your computer and vice versa, and it can block all attempted communication allowing only what you choose to permit. This makes KPF an ideal solution for notebook computers that freely travel in and out of the corporate network, facing exposure to various risks as they connect from different locations.

Kerio Personal Firewall protects against:
  • information theft, modification or destruction
  • Trojan horse applications
  • spyware
  • unauthorized access from within the local network
  • denial of service attacks to applications or services
For Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000, and XP (Note: Windows 95 is no longer supported.)

  • enhanced packet filter - define unlimited number of protocols, services, address groups, time intervals, etc.
  • firewall can be configured by simply permitting or denying communication to applications - suitable for beginners and less experienced users who do not want to use the advanced packet filter
  • Intrusion Detection System
  • System Security - applications on the desktop protected against being rewritten, modified or misused by other applications, etc.
  • new status reports in the administration Window - traffic chart, connections, etc.
many enhancements in performance and load on the memory, especially in the kernel part of the engine

Any word on what's new in this beta? B3 was very annoying in that the advanced packet filter rules wouldn't stick between sessions.

Changes from KPF 4.0.0 Beta 3:
========================
- fixed several bugs on packet filter: rule creation, rule movement, groups

- fixed crash, when using large number of network rules

- packet filter rules were used in impropper order

directions, log, alert)
+ added IP groups to packet filter
+ improved stability to communication between gui and service
+ added tooltip statistics on the chart

+ possibility to enable/disable security modules (Network security, System
security, IDS)
+ improved importing - it is possible to import 2.x rules directly from KPF
Admin console
+ organization changes in config file may cause lost of several settings when
upgrading: "Enable network security", "Disable predefined network security",
"Stop Traffic", and some minor right click menu admin settings (port, address
resolving), rules stay unchanged!!

When will this go final? It boggles me, they go from verison 3.0 beta 6 to 4.0 beta now. There was never a 3.0 final. Version 2.15 still rocks though.

they just want to keep up their version number with ZoneAlarm (who just released v4.0 coincidentally)

Exactly. This will be reviewed as a "4th-generation" product.

They had a major rethink, so the changes were that dramatic, that they changed version numbers. Final release is set for August.

Does version 4 run as a system service or just a program?

After OUtpost, this one does perform as a firewall should. No bugs found, as yet....
